I notice that the truck has a dash-mounted vacuum operated 2-speed rear control. I drove a '54 dump truck with that type switch and it never failed, which I can't say about the electrical controls.
This definitely brings back memories. My parents had a 1948 Chevrolet half-ton Suburban with the same dash, interior (minus the nice seat-- ours had horrible split and cracked brown naugahyde!), starter pedal, floor shift with three regular gears and a granny gear, etc. Except for a couple of years, it was in regular use until traded in in 1967 on a Chevy Belair! I'm not sure whether your truck would have the same engine as our half-ton but it sounds the same.
Had an old studabaker with a flathead 6.Had just enough compression to run.Loved to burn oil but i think thats what kept the rings and valves lubed so it could continue running.
@ridinhonda4life AMEN brotha, once found an old nova in a barn not to far from my work, came round the block and saw a glint, it was a wwII ammo box with: keys to car, and the purchase papers.
@dieselcrazy07 looks like new jersey judging by the inspection sticker. also if it is NJ the car has to be registered and driveable if it's sitting in your yard/driveway, especially if you have bitchy neighbors that complain about you having "ugly cars" that don't look nice. it's kinda shitty to be honest
Got to love that ole AMERICAN IRON! It looks like a HOA tagged your ole truck, tell to them to go fuck themself! If it was the City tell them same to, they have more important thing to do. Hope you restore that truck to its original charm back when it was new.
this goes to show you all what old mechanical operated METAL vehicles can do. Good luck with that $30,000 new car or truck. It'll last about 10 years. maybe.
@oinkyerdoinkyerzwazz I wish I would have made a video of it pulling the old rusty tandem axle 1947 5th wheel trailer. I loaded my flamed 57 Chevy convertible on the trailer, to give it a load to haul to work out the bugs when I first got it. When I would turn corners, that old rusty 5th wheel trailer would make an ery scretch like that old rusty tanker truck did in the movie Dual. Imagine driving it late at night with the amber glow from the cablights on the hood, hauling a load. I lived it
@khaliddrb1 He sayd it in its video its the starter button. Old chevy,s had that back in the day. I don,t know why i don,t know much about ol chevy trucks.
Sounds a little like an old Blue Flame 6. And engine that's close to impossible to kill. Nissan bought the design when Chevy were finished with it, and it was in every Nissan Patrol from the 60s through to the mid 80s. The only noticeable differences they made were to stamp "Nissan" in the rocker cover, and use a different carburettor and air cleaner
You'd be amazed what thes old engines can do without messing with them, but fitting some headers and a 350 Holley transforms them. There's a distinct roar coming from its throat at about 3000rpm with this setup. My boss at a roadhouse I used to work at had this setup in a short wheelbase 1971 G60 Nissan Patrol. He used this beast to pull his 30 foot boat, and rip out the occasional tree stump. Only thing that ever went wrong with it was rust
@Mechknight73 I have often thought this 6 was undercarburated. It always did what I needed it to do. It had a tandem axle flat bed trailer when I firs bought it and I loaded a complete 1960 chevy and a complete 55 chevy on it and hauled them down the freeway with this truck for 100 miles at about 50 mph. Slower on steep hills tho.
If this old Chev is to be part of your permanent fleet, run a 350 Holley, headers and a propane conversion. The Holley is for when fuel is cheap, the propane is for when it isn't and it runs a lot cleaner than ordinary unleaded. The only thing you have to remember is that it will run hotter on propane, and acceleration isn't as good. Most Class 1 (for anything up to 3 tonnes) towtrucks in Australia run on LPG or propane as it's known in America, because it's cheaper and cleaner
Oh that, thats our family car, its a 1957 Chevy convertible. We have put over 200,000 miles on it on vacations, taking the kids to school, the store, the wrecking yards, you name it, Its a good dependable car.
@Dayberry I don't know, that old man who drove it when it was new said he drove it all over the USA when it was new delivering ice machines to motels. I did find an old California and New Jersy road map in it??? He said he wished he had a dollar for everytime he drove it to Colorado, he would be rich.
Even its Japanese descendant takes a long time to die. Nissan bought the Blue Flame design in the 60s, and used it on its Patrol 4WDs up until the early 80s. Every bit as strong as the Blue flame because there was very little they changed about it
