I have been looking at the caste system within Hinduism. Very troubling indeed. They believe that people come from different parts of god and are divided into different castes. The Dalits are not considered a part of god and are therefore considered lower than animals. They are delegated to a life of servitude and sanctified discrimination. There are over 160million of them in India. Sounds like fun :-(
The US is still very religious. Mainly Christian, but dropping steadily. If the contention that religion has a negative effect is true, the US should be positively impacted by the decline in Christianity. I simply dont see it. Quite the opposite.

Many Christians only want to apply the Old Testament law to others. They do not want people killed who work on the Biblical Sabbath, because they work on Saturday. JW - if christians (little c) did as Christ (big C) commanded then you wouldn't be engaged in semantic quibbling. You'd be doing it and urging others to do the same instead of voting for corporations to get richer and screw the poor even more than they are.
Or is it your choice to NOT follow Christ's teachings and still claim piety?

There's no straw man argument here. Nice try. You're dancing around the issue that Jesus explicitly endorses giving ALL your money to the poor. A government that tells you to do that is following Jesus' word. Rather than celebrate this and wholeheartedly endorse that government as one that, at last, understands and implements Christ's message, you call it "socialist".
It's pathetic the hoops you'll jump through to turn Jesus into a free market capitalist.

You know, when you really think about it, the Christian Right is actually Jewish. Think about it: they rely so heavily on the judgmental, ultraconservative Old Testament and believe in that kind of overly strict father figure of a God, rather than the more tolerant Jesus. In what way are they Christian?? This is absurd! They hardly ever refer to the Gospels. It's always some idiotic conservative verse in the OT.

Many Christians only want to apply the Old Testament law to others. They do not want people killed who work on the Biblical Sabbath, because they work on Saturday. They do not want rebellious youth killed, because they were rebellious when young, and have rebellious kids. I don't think you need a definition given my previous post. Every church system has people who lie, cheat, steal, engage in extramarital and premarital sex. The reality is that churches have the same problems every school and every political party has. Nobody is innocent of making mistakes. We need to stop being vicious moral watchdogs over sexual moral issues in government, and start focusing more on the real issues - the political platforms.

The point I was trying to make is that situations most people consider immoral are present in all areas of society-church included. We should not get bent out of shape over schools being evil, when churches have exactly the same problems public schools have. If anything, that is a voice of support for those who do not like to hear people screaming about immorality.

Read The God Delusion for an accurate secular definition of morality. Morality certainly does not come from a religion that advocates murdering a woman if she isn't a virgin when you marry her, offering your daughter up for gang rape to protect an 'angel' or murdering every member of a settlement if they happen to pray to a different god to you. Nor does morality come from a God who tells humanity how proud he is to be petty, jealous, unjust and viscious.
