  • how do you get that bass tone? is it all in the bass or is it the amp and bass

  • @UnforgetableGoat

I believe it's mostly in the bass and the way I strike the strings.

  • @TJH3113 how so, is it more treble on the amp?

  • hey dude i am a really big rush fan and counterparts it's one of the best albums of rush, can you do a cover of the song Animate? i love how geddy invented the bass part in that song, please do a cover of animate, thanks for the videos!

  • @Djlaloable

I don't do so well with the "flamenco" technique Geddy uses on that song and much of that album.

  • @TJH3113 and a cover of vapor trail? as i see that's like the only rush album that u haven't cover yet.

  • @Djlaloable

I hate to say it, but I don't really care for much off of the Vapor Trails album. I covered "How It Is" and that might be it.

  • @TJH3113 How It Is it's a very good song! i'd love to see a cover to that song or Peaceable Kingdom

  • hey, can you play the live version of this with his little jam at the end? I just started trying to figure it out.

  • @thebatman101069

    I'll leave that alone.

  • @TJH3113 You mean I'll "Leave that thing alone" HA!

  • @TJH3113 you mean you will "leave that thing alone" lol sorry i had to :)

  • Simon Cowell can't half play bass!

  • @irena7777777

    Thanks.

  • @TJH3113 Well, at least now I know he has a redeemable feature

  • @irena7777777 Simon Cowell....LOL

  • I love how you search for pretty much any Rush song (Well, the good ones at least) and find a cover by you. Incredible job on the cover, by the way!

  • @amadden123

Thank you very much. I'm glad you appreciate the videos.

  • awesome!! you rock! :D I enjoy watching your great covers man

  • @Simonzivoj

    Thank you.

  • Hey guy, you can sing and play simultaneously?,i can play and sing only Limelight, and i think unbelievable this capacity in geddy lee,you should have the same opnion.

  • @Heinkey

No, I can't sing and play at all simultaneously.

  • @TJH3113 i can babble like a cretin and play simultaneously, does that count for anything?

  • @21Rushisaband12 yeah all i can do is do a little jazz scating but not much else

  • nice!

  • @LuiCduardo

    Thanks.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed watching this cover, especially the opening section.. You got it note-for-note perfect, as well as replicating Geddy's aggressive plucking style.

I've been watching your videos for awhile now and they've helped me to learn a lot of intricacies of Rush's basslines. Keep 'em coming, there surely can't be much left!

  • @JMcG92

Thank you very much, I appreciate the kind words.

  • great job your really good keep up the good work.

  • @TheBunny602

    Thank you.

  • my ma, we as "russians" got to get your videos viewed by the "varsity" the boys...anyone out there get theses videos in the hands of RUSH!!!!

This is your task....get on it

  • @YoungBrando25

    Hah!

  • Exquisite work!

  • @SurlyBird02

    Thank you.

  • Hey great stuff...I'm pretty critical of RUSH covers but you are truly fantastic. There is a guy on you tube who does Neil Peart tributes, rays2112 , just wondering if you ever saw him? Well back to your vids. My favorite song is Red Sector A

  • @TOMIT2112

Thank you very much. I have seen Ray2112 - very good drummer. Too bad there's no bass in Red Sector A, that is a great song. I like the guitar solo.

  • I'd like to say a lot of things.

    1. Congratulations, you are great.

    2. What Rush songs do you recommend for a beginner like me?

    3. What are the hardest Rush songs to play?

    4. Do you play only Rush songs? Cause I'd like to request some songs from other bands.

    Anyway, have a nice day!!!

  • @Lordoftheflies234

    1. Thanks.

    2. Bastille Day, Fly By Night, Lakeside Park are the first few I learned.

    3. YYZ, La Villa (mainly the bass solo), Turn The Page, Digital Man

    4. I have another playlist of non-RUSH songs on my channel. But RUSH is really the band I'm most passionate about covering. You're free to offer any suggestion you like though. I'll give any suggestion consideration.

  • How long have you played bass?

  • @halodemo65

I've been playing for over thirty years.

  • Awesome possum!

  • @vineyardedge

Thanks. (it's opossum) I had somebody try to get away with "possum" in Scattergories once.

  • @TJH3113 Yeah- I knows.

  • @vineyardedge

I'd hate for you to lose that spelling-bee.

  • man, this dude awesome

  • @corrections189

    Thanks a lot.

  • hei man you are awesome i see many of your videos and are so correct continue like that :)

  • @ElTioChalo14

Thanks again. I try and play them as correctly as possible.

  • Yeah i would listen for notes but sometimes would seen like the song was tuned different than eadg? but Geddy seems to use standard tuning.. No specific notes to learn.. I noticed on permanant waves tour Geddy used a stick Bass which seems harder to play then his Fender.

  • @limo1

You're right, Geddy always uses standard tuning except for on a couple of later songs where he tunes his E down to a D.

Geddy used the Rickenbacker on the Permanent Waves tour (this was the first tour I saw them on). I think the first time he used the Steinberger was on the Grace Under Pressure tour.

  • Wow ! U have such a great tone with that J-bass....I wish i could groove it like u do...I have a hard time grooving....I'm most like a machine player(like a midi thing).I posted this one too,it's awhile now but...Anyway great playing !!!

  • @Javic2112

Thanks. I used to play much more rigidly, stiffly or, as you described it, "machine" - like. It was only after I spent some time away from playing and became a little less self critical and relaxed that my playing loosened up and began to "groove" a bit.

  • @TJH3113 Thks for sharing !!!

  • Hey Troy, if you learn by ear do you know the notes and chords?? if so can you make a video saying which notes your playing?

  • @limo1

I listen to the bass line and then try to figure out where on the bass it's being played. Some songs are easier than others and sometimes it's a process of elimination - figuring out which notes "aren't" being played in order to track down the correct notes. Then I'll try and play along with the song (or part) to make sure it's correct - if it is I move on, if it's not then it's back to the drawing board.

Do you have a specific song in mind that you need to learn the notes for?

  • That was great!!! I want to play like you!

  • @Infernalfight666 Thanks. Practice.

  • hey man this is SWEET!!!! do you have tabs or sheet music for this?

  • @HoleyCrapFilms

Thank you. No tabs or sheet music, I learn by ear.

  • that was perfect! I couldn't find one mistake. is that the new skin of the geddy lee jazz bass?

  • @Do21or12Die

Thanks. And yes, they started offering this model in Sunburst.

  • great interpretation!!!! I was always waiting for this cover from you ;-) 1:17 I love this part!!! very clean, and nice ending, is your improv?? Geddy does at some stage??

  • @duilkin

Thanks Duilkin. Only the very last riff is mine the others are during the fade out.

  • did you teach yourself to play?

  • @toxicfire83

For the most part, yes. I did take 5-6 lessons from the nice old man where I bought my first bass but he played the organ so they really weren't "bass" lessons. We would play "When The Saints Come Marching In" for a half hour.

  • Here is a belated massive thank you for this and all of your other videos! I've just started university but you can be sure as anything that getting this tune somewhere close to this standard is my first project. Thanks again.

  • @FearOfTheDark987

And a massive "you're welcome" to you. Good luck to you with both your start of University and getting this song together.

  • thank you very much for giving you work to get these songs

  • @melqui33

You're very welcome. Thanks for watching.

  • Whenever I wanna learn the bass parts for a Rush song I ALWAYS come here! thanks for covering one of my fav instrumentals!

  • @scarfacedan09

Thanks s lot, that's nice to know.

  • <----------------- Jealous of your ability!

Such a great cover, man. I daresay it was played on par with Geddy himself!

  • @zanarian11

I wouldn't go that far, but thanks anyway.

  • i really like this song and i think u did a really good job

  • @toxicfire83

    Thank you very much.

  • Hey, smile!!

  • @Dan441734

    What's that?

  • @TJH3113 just pulling your leg Troy. Great job!

  • @Dan441734

I know. I was asking what a smile was. I've always been kind of Vulcan-like (emotionless) when I play. No offense taken.

  • Smooth :)

  • @bassplayer7420

    Thanks.

  • Great job once again. I love when your pulling off on the E note.

The ending was awesome. Brought a huge smile on my face.

    Thanks for sharing with us.

  • @constantine2112

    Thank you Constantine.

  • Your musical marksmanship is incredible Troy, right on target, every time! Gr8 song choice, and immaculate presentation!

  • @logan2112five

    Thank you sir.

  • Awesome as always! Could you do "High Water" any time soon?

  • @wgcgolf

I'll take a listen. That's on Hold Your Fire, right?

  • @TJH3113 Yes, it is.

  • Excellent!

  • @REGDABDAM

    Thanks.

  • Nice.... :)

  • @dsalavar

    Thank you.

  • Very nice as always!

Cool to see you kind of getting into Counterparts a little more, it's a great album.

  • @Jalreal

Thanks. He plays this pretty "straight" so it wasn't too much trouble.

  • nice

  • @k726able

    Thank you.

  • Possibly y favorite Geddy line to play. So funky

  • Do u use tab or sheet music cause I wanna learn alot of the songs u do!

  • @07hottie0

I learned most of these songs by ear a long time ago and they just stuck with me. Learning by ear can be tedious and frustrating at times but I believe it's the best way to learn. Used in conjunction with the "tabs" I've heard so much about might be good as well.

  • Just saw this live in August in Chicago Geddy had a sweet solo afterwards, and nice cover btw! Comming from a drummer id love to jam with you man, ive never really jammed with a decent Rush bassist :/

  • @CrawfordDrummer

Thanks. We saw them this tour as well and will hopefully see them again once the album is released. I'm looking to start jamming a bit myself.

  • nice work... now see if you can do some of Geddy's jam outros from Different Stages or Rush in Rio ;)

  • @soopahsoopah

    Thanks...but I'll pass on that.

  • any idea how to get your good tone if you are playing your bass on a mixer?

  • @toberichmoe

I'm not using a mixer, I just have little microphone placed in front of my amp. I really wouldn't know what to do with one. Sorry.

  • Nice, I've been hoping you would do this one. Great job. The jazz makes sense because it's what Geddy uses on the song, but it would have been interesting to hear it on a Ric.

  • @marvincandle815

Thanks. I guess it is a bit more accurate to play it on a Jazz bass.

  • awesome!

  • @Bassist1945

    Thank you.

  • Nice cover! So, she picked the Jazz, huh? Would've been cool if you did what this other guy did on a cover of "Freewill" by playing it with like 7 different basses and every certain amount of seconds it would switch a bass to show off the different tonal sounds (He had like a lakland, Ric 4003, fretless Ric 4001, Jazz, Stingray and other basses).

Also, you ever think about doing the new 2 EP tracks? Those stuff are killer.

  • @lasteffect

    Thanks.

Yeah, I couldn't decide (though I was leaning toward the Rick) and she thought this was "snappier" (her words).

That Freewill cover sound really interesting. I'd like to see/hear it.

I don't cover their newer material all that well. I kind of dropped out after Roll The Bones.

  • @TJH3113 I just sent you a PM of the link. I hope you enjoy it, friend.

  • @lasteffect

Cool. Thanks, I'll check it out this evening.

  • Your covers are a guarantee

  • @patriot3dx

...or your money back. Thank you.
