  • Bill Bailey brought me here

  • This has to be the single greatest piece of music EVER written for a television news program.

  • Wow! This is the reason why the last couple harry potter movies sucked.... they didn't have John williams' music in them.

  • This music morning and evening has always told me what time it was when I hear it play on the TV...I dunno why but when I hear it - for a fleeting moment - it brings back a warm atmosphere of familiarty from years gone by. Its a powerful, memorable piece that will always be known to NBC only. Awesome. Unforgettable....

  • Urgent strings.

  • Greatest composer our time.

  • Okay but isn't it a bit telltale when they have John Williams, who's spent a lot of his career scoring all these fantastical movies scores the news? Look at the correlation, lol it's more glaringly obvious then the CBS eye.

  • Perfect song to do my homework to~!

  • NOW THIS IS GREAT STUFF!!!! THANK'S!!!

  • its more than one news theme its for Meet the Press, The Today Show and Nightly News. This stuff makes me happy to be an American.

  • this isn't grooveshark.

  • I guess now 4 people watch CBS News.

  • No doubting who composed this -- "The Mission" contains some well-known motifs from some of Williams' extraordinary contributions to the cinema, such as "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "E.T.: The Extraterrestrial" (amongst others). (Those who have enjoyed this may also enjoy the "ABC Majestic Fanfare" -- posted at YouTube under that exact name, running 1:02.)

  • nice horn mistake at 2:08... they never learn do they ;)

  • @Grillhorn where's a mistake at 2:08? I can't hear one.

  • @David0794 Put on some phones and listen close. It's not horrific or anything, but it is there. BTW they sound great

  • It's crazy what he can make, just for a news channel. Lol..

  • stunning, such an amazing theme!! thanks for the upload! =D

  • "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Peacock"!

  • @pbanta62 LMAO!! Or Jurassic Peacock! :)

  • This screams Brian Williams just because NBC Nightly News

    Number 1 right there

  • If you like this, check out Jupiter, part of the Planets Suite by Gustav Holst. The introduction is VERY similar, it's pretty obvious Williams was influenced by Holst, a lot of his music has similar themes and chord progression. There's a little gem in the middle of Jupiter too. Now you know where that comes from!

  • Movies are great. But everyday life is the true epic. It takes a very special composer to set it to music. Thanks, John Williams.

  • awe come on universal healthcare ain't that bad we just have to come up with the right concept.

  • Wish YouTube had a permanent repeat button

  • This should be the theme of the US government!

  • John William isn't human, he is God. This theme isn't even for a movie, and still better than what today' composer have written so far.

  • John William isn't human, he is God. This theme isn't even for movie, and still better than what today' composer have written so far.

  • It sounds like ET on a horse being chased by Darth Vader...

  • @DannyFox06 a ha, you smart one you. Came here after Bill Bailey's, did ya? :)

  • @nayajhen you know it! haha, it's a bit of an overcook for a news theme, this needs to be in a film.

  • This totally rules ! i will always love this music. So triumphant, so festive, so proud, so great !

  • BILLIAM BAILEYUS

  • Thumbs up if you came here because of Bill Bailey.

  • @AlexRichardVocat And I sang the Bailey lyrics... with my family... x)

  • @AlexRichardVocat Bill ruined it with his singing....

  • @AlexRichardVocat WTF...????

  • Sends shivers up my spine..so beautiful. I dream of America.....

  • One of the best news musics ever.

  • John WIlliams is so much a part of our American culture and The Mission always makes me proud to be a New Yorker. We listen to just a few seconds of it when we tune in to the nightly news but the pace and detail to such a fine piece reminds me of every New Yorkers speed and grace in the workplace. Kudos to Mr Williams who gives us so much to be thankful for.

  • This is lovely. Thanks for posting! Cheers!

  • "This is NBC's nightly news with Brian Williams."

  • Look, It's E.T. on a horse chased by Darth Vader!

  • His "Mission", should he decide to accept, is to compose the greatest theme to a program ever heard!!! This song will end in 3 minutes 24 seconds!!! Good luck John!!!

  • 3 People watch CBS News.

  • This is great music

  • what great and tragic events unfold in the world today ?

  • So let me get this straight. Pretty much every epic symphonic song was written and composed by John Williams? lol He is Legend.

  • @derkomissar100 Not EVERY one. Just the vast majority of them in the last 45 years.

  • @derkomissar100 Pretty much sums it up. John Williams if so THE MAN!

  • @derkomissar100

Not just this. He has composed some of the most recognizable film scores in the history of motion pictures, most notably Star Wars. He also composed music for Jaws, Superman, Indiana Jones, E.T., Jurassic Park, Home Alone and three Harry Potter films. He has composed the music for all but two of director Steven Spielberg's feature films. XD

  • Incredible how this picks up. NBC should play the ENTIRE thing before the news!

  • @reformedfruit if they did, I would tune every night for at least 3 min 24 sec lol.

  • I have been reading so many blogs and articles that say "he will" and some that say "he wont," I can only hope he does. I love his music and it would be amazing if he came back to score the last chapter of the series...

    If anyone knows, please share!

    (=

  • This, is Seven News, With Chris bath

  • Y do 3 people dislike this? There r some things on this earth that just make u shake ur head.

  • @ 2:59 reminds me of when I lived in Rosslyn, VA - Washington DC working for United Airlines. Was looking out over the city from my apartment window (this theme in the background). Overwhelmed with pride, chilled up and down my spine. Still shed a tear when I hear this.

  • @MsBkirk Same here!

  • This is THE theme for the news. Hearing it just makes me want to hear current events.

  • As a British subscriber, I only became aware of this news theme through Bill Bailey's 'Remarkable Guide To The Orchestra' DVD.

    Thanks Bill!

  • Epic music for a network that once could be respected.

  • Sounds like a mission to send ET home.

  • it sounds like star wars music!!!!

  • better sound but it sounds a but faster

  • This gives me goosebumps.

  • The tempo is a bit fast, isn't it?

  • @zoetheruu These two recordings are a bit slower, and closer to the pace used on NN's current broadcasts: v=l7kIgcYgIQk , v=yMAG1LBKoIM . Let me know what you think.

  • @FullMentalPanic i think so. But it seems not always, just in some parts.

  • I feel like I am entering Carneige hall or something when I hear this. I want to play this before I do something big! I mean...who couldn't!!!

  • @23Daant

    lol i know

if i ever become prez(which will only happen in mah dreams) i want to have this song play :D

  • How can you not get psyched when you hear this theme? The man is brillant.

  • i love this song!

  • This song reminds me of broadcasting and anchor legend Tom Brokaw

    One of the best

  • It has a very "Gustav Holst" feeling to it.

  • @dewooo Holst was one of John William's main influences, especially when you compare Gustav's BRILLIANT "The Planets" suite and John's "Star Wars".

  • @HardyRStudios That's wrong, it is really different, he was more influenced by Korngold for Star Wars, and by Shostakovitch for his concerti.

  • @GGbreizh You're right, I can't believe I forgot about that (Korngold's King's Row theme and the main Star Wars theme are almost completely identical), but still Star Wars has had some influence from The Planets (particularly the Mars suite towards the end). Overall, you're right since he has had a lot more influence from Erich Korngold; some others are Richard Strauss and Max Steiner.

  • @HardyRStudios for the very simple reason that Lucas ASKED Williams to write music like the Korngold score. It was the original temp track to Star Wars. Lucas forced Williams to write music that was heavily derivative. It was his job to do as the director demanded.

Williams' music has no "influences" from Korngold. If you listen to works that Williams composed ON HIS OWN, (ie: not "commissioned" for a film), then you realize that he has a unique style all his own. Listen to Soundings.

  • @Capcanuk99 You're right about that too; George Lucas did ask for that type of style. It seems though that you thought, through your comments, that I was trying to say that John Williams is unoriginal or that he just copies other works (if you were implying that, then I wasn't trying to say that/ if you weren't then I'm sorry for my misunderstandings). This was a nice conversation that we had about music and thank you for letting me remember the facts that you said.

  • We're doing a medley of songs John Williams wrote, this is the second one in the piece...

  • "john williams in concert"?

  • @Rodier1128 the band song? the 8th graders played it at my school and it was pretty good.

  • sounds like Jurassic Park!

  • most of the time americans are screwed up, but sometimes they make great stuff like this...

  • Tell that to all the Australians who come here to make it big in country music... No seriously, would you???

  • Personally I think that John Williams has a diverse style, because listen to this...now listen to Cantina Band...Now listen to the music from Hook. Just to say, even those pieces can mean something else to each individual.

  • the patriot, memiors of a geshia and the tv theme music from irwin allen's 1960's productions show even more of his diversity

  • about 1:14 it sounds like indiana jones

  • Personally I am tired of the money driven rants from both political parties. Phony and corrupt.

  • This version seems to be sped up a bit. The version where you see the orchestra recording is a tad slower and more effective, this feels slightly rushed, although it showcases Williams' genius all the same.

  • The video of him recording it does, indeed, show a slower speed, but it's not the same recording. I saw him conduct this in New York a few years ago and it was closer to this speed.

  • too bad NBC is run by Libtard Democrats.

  • Too bad some people are so close minded

  • OMG,,, What would Jesus Say ???

  • @chaloner so FOX is a piece of shit run by old dumbass Republicans.

  • only a Libtard would say that 0_O

  • and the notes for the NBC chimes are?

    G... E... C...

General Electric Corporation is NBC's parent company

    coincidence? I think not

  • The NBC chimes have been around for years...they used to be on the old NBC Radio Network. Back then, NBC was owned by RCA.

  • @frenchstudentA Owned by GE? Not anymore...

  • ah yes, sad but true. My comment, however, was made at a time when NBC was indeed owned by GE

  • Remembering Michael Stamm and the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany....Games of the XX Olympiad..

  • They don't call John Williams "THE MAESTRO" for nothing.....!

  • This music is EPIC. I always get chills down my spine when I hear the theme at the beginning and end of the news every night.

  • Ahh...I've always loved this theme. Reminds of the day I realized I wanted to be a reporter. I'm on my way to make it happen right now at my university.

  • this makes me want to attend a special meeting in DC while the beautiful autumn leaves fall when I walk my way to the door with a courageous beat.

  • I agree

  • They should have this theme to the disclosure project!!!

    Obama, words!

  • You know, that could be VERY dangerous, to mix John Williams with Politics.

"And now, I'd like to present our new proposal for universal public health care... John?"

    *violins start*

"Damn... how can we disagree? This feels too epic!"

  • @Almafeta but he played at Obama inauguration, how not to mix Williams with politics, obviously he is democrat, or at least he like Obama.

Great composition anyway. Maybe one of the best of his.

  • @Almafeta lol! :D

  • A very great piece. I never know he composed the score of the NBC/ Austraila 7 News and did Star Wars and Indy.

  • Does anyone have "The Pulse of Events" from the same composer?

  • I've been looking for that, too. From Meet the Press. Can't find it anywhere.

  • This theme is quite epic... it makes me want to go on a rocket ship into space, not watch television!!!

  • I read that John Williams has showed interest in composing the music for the 7th Harry Potter film, Deathly Hallows. I don't see him doing it though. He didn't do anything for 3 years until Speilberg came a-calling for his 4th Indiana Jones film last year. I don't think he'll do anything till Speilberg's next movie. Don't stop though Williams. John is 77; Ennio Morricone is 80 and just composed the score for Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds :)

  • Hi wilsondylanmccartney

Sadly, the Grande Maestro (as Quincy Jones calls ENNIO MORRICONE) felt himself unable to score that one in the time available. (I don't think he LIKES Tarantino's movies)

Anyway, he tours all over Italy and the world, and composes mainly "his own" music ~ pieces now numbered well over 100.

Here though is 'Baaria' which he worked on intensely for Tornatore:

Here is what everyone thinks of as 'THE MISSION' ~

  • lol for a news theme soo funny!

  • It sounds a lot like Jerry Goldsmith's "First Blood" from the film The Blue Max.

  • the news network is crap but john williams is soooo awesome, i love his music. and the band is phenomenal

  • NBC news is good in contrast to the MSNBC channel which is only good during the day until the pundits are let out of their cages in the afternoon and evening.

  • Hey! i am an advocate of pundits!

  • @racegal885 Nightly News isnt crap, Meet The Press before Tim Russert Died wasnt crap. Everything else is..............

  • I wish JW would compose something for the BBC - that would be awesome!

  • Brilliant! It honestly never crossed my mind that John Williams was the composer for this. It makes sense, though. I'm such a huge fan of his other work, and I always had this theme stuck in my head since I was a tot. His music is literally everywhere.

  • We're playing this in band... I really wish we could sound this good. : /

  • I wonder if they'll ever use this again.

    Best theme for NBC news.

  • I thought they still use this...?

  • They do.

  • NBC Nightly News is hands down the best nightly newscast in America every evening, if its either Brian Williams on weekdays, or Lester Holt on the weekends, its still the best. This music is also great, what a Masterpiece.

  • I also like the Tom Brokaw Era

  • I've gotta say ...I like the BBC intro too. I think its a throwback to the original World Service intro.

  • Absolutely Brilliant. I crank the TV every night when its time for NBC News.

  • I do that ritual too except on Fridays and saturday, shabatt

  • You know when what you're hearing was written by John Williams.

  • it's funny when john puts out a score and it isn't nominated, cuz he could be in the last stages of alzheimers, and still write better scores than ANYONE'S bullshit out there these days. he gets nominated a lot, but if you can be strong enough to push away embarassment and be real, he should be nominated and win almost EVERY FUCKING YEAR AND SCORE. according the academy awards, his scores have only been the best of the year 5 times in his whole career. since 1975, he's been the bomb juan.

  • nah your not wrong, well i don't think you are anyway , read your comment before i heard this piece and yeah i can see the similarities, good observation (Y)

  • Well it is John Williams so it would sound alike.

  • This is very fast to me.

  • a little faster than the one to tv

    agreed

  • I believe the intro to Meet The Press was also written by Williams

  • listen to The Mission IV, the Meet the Press theme on imeem, another John Williams classic.

  • sounds like star wars

    awesome

  • Even though I will not watch NBC News because they're very dishonest, it's still the best theme song for a domestic news broadcast. Only the BBC News theme is better.

  • there is no british news theme, just a beat track with some mood sound trying to be hip! GIVEME A BREAK! EXPAND YOUR MUSIC KNOWLEDGE! theres a LOT MORE then top 40 in the world.

  • love it

  • Such a great piece of music! Best news theme ever!

  • john is the man one of the best news theme songs

  • Was the piece originally recorded that fast or did you speed the recording up yourself? Because it's notably faster than in the "John Williams Recording NBC Nightly News Beat" video. And frankly, I like the latter (slower) version better.

  • He recorded a few different versions at that session. This is just a variation, but it is actual speed.

  • I never knew that John Williams composed this theme that I'd been listening to since I was little, or that it was the NBC news theme as well. I only learnt this a couple of years ago - it was then that he was cemented as a legend in my eyes. :)

  • He did Meet the Press's theme too!

  • Any chance of a national nine news remix coming up soon?

  • Nope. LOL. I think NNN theme is already great as it is.

Ask WAtvVideos or MediaNine, they might do a remix. XD
