This music morning and evening has always told me what time it was when I hear it play on the TV...I dunno why but when I hear it - for a fleeting moment - it brings back a warm atmosphere of familiarty from years gone by. Its a powerful, memorable piece that will always be known to NBC only. Awesome. Unforgettable....
Okay but isn't it a bit telltale when they have John Williams, who's spent a lot of his career scoring all these fantastical movies scores the news? Look at the correlation, lol it's more glaringly obvious then the CBS eye.
No doubting who composed this -- "The Mission" contains some well-known motifs from some of Williams' extraordinary contributions to the cinema, such as "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "E.T.: The Extraterrestrial" (amongst others). (Those who have enjoyed this may also enjoy the "ABC Majestic Fanfare" -- posted at YouTube under that exact name, running 1:02.)
If you like this, check out Jupiter, part of the Planets Suite by Gustav Holst. The introduction is VERY similar, it's pretty obvious Williams was influenced by Holst, a lot of his music has similar themes and chord progression. There's a little gem in the middle of Jupiter too. Now you know where that comes from!
John WIlliams is so much a part of our American culture and The Mission always makes me proud to be a New Yorker. We listen to just a few seconds of it when we tune in to the nightly news but the pace and detail to such a fine piece reminds me of every New Yorkers speed and grace in the workplace. Kudos to Mr Williams who gives us so much to be thankful for.
His "Mission", should he decide to accept, is to compose the greatest theme to a program ever heard!!! This song will end in 3 minutes 24 seconds!!! Good luck John!!!
Not just this. He has composed some of the most recognizable film scores in the history of motion pictures, most notably Star Wars. He also composed music for Jaws, Superman, Indiana Jones, E.T., Jurassic Park, Home Alone and three Harry Potter films. He has composed the music for all but two of director Steven Spielberg's feature films. XD
I have been reading so many blogs and articles that say "he will" and some that say "he wont," I can only hope he does. I love his music and it would be amazing if he came back to score the last chapter of the series...
@ 2:59 reminds me of when I lived in Rosslyn, VA - Washington DC working for United Airlines. Was looking out over the city from my apartment window (this theme in the background). Overwhelmed with pride, chilled up and down my spine. Still shed a tear when I hear this.
@zoetheruu These two recordings are a bit slower, and closer to the pace used on NN's current broadcasts: v=l7kIgcYgIQk , v=yMAG1LBKoIM . Let me know what you think.
@GGbreizh You're right, I can't believe I forgot about that (Korngold's King's Row theme and the main Star Wars theme are almost completely identical), but still Star Wars has had some influence from The Planets (particularly the Mars suite towards the end). Overall, you're right since he has had a lot more influence from Erich Korngold; some others are Richard Strauss and Max Steiner.
@HardyRStudios for the very simple reason that Lucas ASKED Williams to write music like the Korngold score. It was the original temp track to Star Wars. Lucas forced Williams to write music that was heavily derivative. It was his job to do as the director demanded.
Williams' music has no "influences" from Korngold. If you listen to works that Williams composed ON HIS OWN, (ie: not "commissioned" for a film), then you realize that he has a unique style all his own. Listen to Soundings.
@Capcanuk99 You're right about that too; George Lucas did ask for that type of style. It seems though that you thought, through your comments, that I was trying to say that John Williams is unoriginal or that he just copies other works (if you were implying that, then I wasn't trying to say that/ if you weren't then I'm sorry for my misunderstandings). This was a nice conversation that we had about music and thank you for letting me remember the facts that you said.
Personally I think that John Williams has a diverse style, because listen to this...now listen to Cantina Band...Now listen to the music from Hook. Just to say, even those pieces can mean something else to each individual.
This version seems to be sped up a bit. The version where you see the orchestra recording is a tad slower and more effective, this feels slightly rushed, although it showcases Williams' genius all the same.

Nope. LOL. I think NNN theme is already great as it is.
Ask WAtvVideos or MediaNine, they might do a remix. XD
