My favorite anime ever, is Bubblegum Crisis. They ended that show prematurely, so when they made Bubblegum Crisis 2040 I was psyched. Turned out it was worse than the original series. I definitely enjoy the original more, by a longshot.
I still have 2040 on my shelf next to the original BGC though. Because I am a fan. Because I love BGC period. Just like Loddoss War.

The song is "Kiseki no Umi" by Maaya Sakamoto. This is the opening to Record of Lodoss Wars, TV series - there was an OVA done a few years prior, hence the distinction.
Lodoss is an older series but a fantastic one nonetheless. It's similar to Eragon in that it takes place in a world of high fantasy, but there the similarities mostly end.
This is D&D set to anime - you have adventurers who are on a quest to save their world, involving magic and mythical beings as well as the epic struggle of good versus evil. I highly recommend it to anyone who is getting into anime and wants to see something different!
The Lodoss TV series sucked dogs. The opening was awesome, so it's amazing how cheaply the actual tv series was animated. Frames were choppy and the plot dragged. The old OVA series was much, much better - it wasn't particularly original but it was a loving tribute to fantasy archetypes, with good pacing and atmospheric/textural touches.
If you mean the girl with the purple hair, she is Leylia: Leylia was kidnapped by a witch early in the series which prompted the reassembling of a cadre of heroes to rescue her. In the opening credits here, she appears at the end in a golden circle, which was actually a magical golden circlet created long long ago and used by Karla the Grey Witch to seal her essence within it.

I have always loved this song. The version of the VHS I have shows the English lyrics. Beautiful and loving poetry.

All I can say is WTF: The opening is so beautiful it makes your eyes all watery but the show itself is unspeakably horrible! OAV was good though
