  • bravo!!!!

  • i wish i could be that good :(

  • If I could choose a second instrument I would choose an euphonium i think.. I like the instrument but also like my alto saxophone. This is so cool!

  • stop comparing! He is fantstic AND good fun to listen to!

  • what is that last note?

  • @sound619 The piece is supposed to be in E-Flat Major, so I'd a a double high "F" for euphonium. This is coming from a trumpet player, though.

  • @sound619 From a low brass player,

Bass clef: an e-flat above the e-flat above the staff

Treble clef: a f above the staff

  • kaiserbaryton... :D

yeah, imagine telling people you play THAT. (pssst; it's really a traditional central european rotary valve euphonium)

  • if only the president or prime minister of a well-known country to the general public played euphonium, then we would be a small percentage of musicians that would be well known!

  • does anyone else call it a baritone?? i like that name better:p but ik its a euphonium..

  • @TheQuickCholo they're not the same thing. a baritone is more cutting and would compare to a trumpet or a trombone. a euphonium has a rich smooth gliding sound and would be compared to a tuba playing in the high range of notes.

  • @TheDrewManXD they are the same thing man.. that doesn't make any since bro.. a tube playing in the high range of notes??? lol.. you can call it whatever.

  • @TheQuickCholo they're very similar. sound is a little different. as i said a euphonium is like a tuba tuned one octave higher and a baritone would be like a trombone or trumpet one octave lower. baritone is timbre and the euphonium has a more mellow tone to it.

  • Like if this is what you get all the time from being a euphonium player:

    "What instrument is that?"

    "A euphonium"

    "Whats that?'

    "It's like a small tuba.."

  • @MovieProductionsRRTM Amen brother... Happens a lot to me especially since I live in the US =/

  • @MovieProductionsRRTM Don't worry I get it from non musicain when I tell them I play cornet.

    List of what is asked.

    A clarinet?

    So it's a trumpet?

    huh?

So on but yeah I know how you feel, it is even better when I pull out something with rotary valves and everyone is like is that a french horn baby or something.

  • @MovieProductionsRRTM

Exactly what I get. Every single word too haha.

  • @TheDarkHipster7 GTFO bro.

  • @TheDarkHipster7 GTFO. If your not a Euphonium player i dont even think you deserve to be on this page, or any of david Childs videos. Btw, i play the Euphonium, so GTFO!!! ^_^

  • I play the euphonium

  • @jakeinglis3 yo bro GTFO!

  • @63skyman woops wrong person :P

  • I play the baritone... SAXOPHONE!!!

  • @TheDarkHipster7 YOU GTFO!

  • He's all right, but the commentator's "best brass soloer" of his generation is quite over the top.

  • @SuperGoldenPony some regard him as that

  • @SuperGoldenPony he sais "one of the finest brass soloists of his generation" which is - imho - absolutely right

  • a friend oh my played this solo yesterday in a concert ,too :) very nice <3

  • Imagine his face when he saw the sheet music for the first time.

  • Like father like son...

  • It's excellent, but being anal he's not completing the gruppettos in the 4th variation before each of the low shock notes leaving a noticeable gap. Would be better taking it a bit slower like his old man and play all the notes!

  • See my top comment? I play the trombone now… sorry guys...

  • I REALLY want the sheet to this..

  • @firehawk801 Buy an Arban's book, it's in the back of it. It's mainly a trumpet book, but they sell it in C Bass clef as well. It's got so much good stuff in it.

  • @RobertCShepley Wait, seriously? It's in an Arban book? thanks:D

  • @firehawk801 Yep. Not the exact piece played here though. This was arranged by Childs but is based on the Arban version.

  • low brass=win

  • i play the baratone!!

  • i wish i had a York or a Besson euphonium :(

  • @sillybandgeekster1 Don't we all.. D:

  • Epic. Wish i could play my euphonium that well.

  • @guitarhero1346. The same with an f attachment trombone. If somebody sees more wrapping, which they have no idea is, they think it is a bass trombone. What's wrong with people these days. They can say the roster to every sports team or every glitch in some video game but don't even know the difference between instruments

  • he makes it look so easy! D:

  • De mais

  • what about steven mead

  • oh yeah, i can do that.

  • valves should not move that fast... :O

  • his dad does it cleaner =3

  • Why can't I live in the UK somewhere? IN the US when you say you play the euphonium people say "What the hell is that?" And then you explain, and they're like "Oh so it's a tuba?" and in the UK if you say you play the euphonium people are like "Oh me too, wanna do a duet?"

  • @guitarhero1346 I totally agree with this I don't know how many times I have had to explain that its not a little tuba

  • @guitarhero1346 not everyone in the uk knows what a euphonium is ive had to explain it to people in th uk

  • @guitarhero1346 no kidding :( Sadly, but since everyone knows what a tuba is, i just say its basicly a mini tuba!

  • @63skyman I always say it's a large bugle.

  • @63skyman Is it right to say it's a Tenor tuba? (Tuba being a Bass)

  • @johntobz lol ig, but if your talking to someone who doesn't know anything about music. You should probably not say that. :P

  • @guitarhero1346 technically it is a tuba, sounds like one, but an octave higher. much like a piccolo trumpet is to a trumpet...... a piccolo tuba!

  • @guitarhero1346

From IN too. You nailed it on the head!

  • @guitarhero1346 Implying everyone in the UK plays a euphonium

  • @guitarhero1346 I'm a euph player from UK and i can assure you that as few people know what a euphonium is over here as in USA. Its a little bit sad really.

  • @guitarhero1346 only if you don't march do people call it a tuba. but I understand the frustration. like when people call the Horn a French horn

  • @guitarhero1346 I know how you feel!

  • @guitarhero1346 trust me dude its the same here ... there is no duets happening ... you would think a brass band would be popular in england but people dont know about them

  • @guitarhero1346 too true...too true...and not enough places to play beautiful euphonium solos over here either....I miss high school (but only a little)

  • He's not a great player because of his family, he's a great player because he practiced!

  • Euphonium comes from the word "euphonious" (i misspelled it probably) which means "beautiful sound"... figure out the rest, all you people who disliked this video.

  • 22 people are deaf.

  • เก่ง สุดตีนอ่ะ เทพสัดหมา เก่งมากกกกกกกกกกกกก

  • Geniallllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BIGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!

  • good god i love my euphonium more than i already did!! :D

  • I want his baritone soooooo bad

  • @dorkadia *ahem* EUPHONIUM. There's a difference.

  • @videofanYT00 not to be mean but look it up on wiki or someyhing

  • @dorkadia Yeah, a euphonium and a baritone horn are two different things. David is playing a euphonium in this video. If you are saying how you want his baritone (he does own a baritone), that has nothing to do with this video.

  • @videofanYT00 um... What is a euphonium... in detail plz

  • @dorkadia The bore of the baritone is cylindrical like a trumpet, and the euphonium is conical as in the tuba/horn. The euphonium has a more deeper sound than a baritone, closer to a tuba. While the baritone has a slightly more, for a lack of a better word, pinched sound, closer to a trombone.

  • @videofanYT00 oh ok can we friend eachother

  • lol looks like Pat Sheridan on tuba

  • EUPHONIUM PLAYERS, UNITE!!!!

  • like if u play the euphonium <3

  • @MovieProductionsRRTM i played euph.. but ill still like:)

  • @MovieProductionsRRTM Does played euph and plays tuba now work too?

  • Learning to play euphonium :D Im 12 and Im kinda sucky... :(

  • Dude You wear gloves when you play something that pretty.

  • @ninjaheart92 I use gloves when I play my euphonium or marching euphonium.

  • @Alexxaisonfire Everyone should. Euphonium is a pretty beast instrument. I march it and play it in concert band.

  • Those flat fingers xD

  • "Mei Huat, der hod drei eckn...^^" the opening of this reminds me of this funny song we used to sing a lot when we were hiking as a child^^

  • wow how the hell does he do the tonguing so fast. i could barely do the triple tongueing for 2 min straight. omg.. he good

  • this inspires me

  • I play euphonium 83

  • I would think a professional like that would have more than three valves...

  • @ilovemekb he does. . .the 4th valve is on the side.

  • @ilovemekb 4th is on the side. compensating euphs have that.

  • @euphonium9132456 some non-comps have them on the side as well.

  • @JonathonEuphRomero true true. However, I'm pretty sure that all comps have it on the side, whereas non comps can have it on either the top of the side.

  • @euphonium9132456 i've actually seen a bell front euph that was 4-inline and was comp. i think it was a King.

  • @JonathonEuphRomero interesting. i havent seen that yet. I've played dual bell euphs though :D hooray for random subject change =]

  • @euphonium9132456 yeah they make some interesting stuff. sometimes they don't last long because no one buys them. like the sterling yorkshire rose euphonium. beautiful instrument, but they aren't made anymore.

  • it so nice.

  • i bet not even half of the people in the audience even know what a euphonium is... such a shame...

  • @BGH1121 Agreed. It is a modern instrument as well. =/ Has a great sound and blends well with double reed instruments like the bassoon

  • I love the look he gives the director when he cuts him off haha

  • @paintballer2630 This motherfucker can play!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @paintballer2630 no one cuts off the best in the world.

  • What's most impressive to me is that he has this memorized. But that's mostly based on the fact my memory is not so great.

  • I played this for my High School Solo ensemble State solo competition. I got a rating of 1. :D

  • @ArguingShadow lol that is awesome, im a sophmore and i play euphonium.... i wish i was that good :(

  • @chaosshality Practice! It truly is the only way to get better. And find lots of good sound references. Not having those is a pretty common and slightly crippling problem with euphonium students.

Oh, there's a recording of The Blue Bells of Scotland w/soloist Michael Dodds on here that works as inspiration. One commenter remarked that he tried to play the piece once and his lip started bleeding during the middle of it. Also, Kobosana te. Fun practice piece. I can link you the PDF if you want.

  • @ArguingShadow better luck next time

  • Where could I get the exact arrangement David plays in this?

  • i can play that........ 10 times slower!! lol simply amazing!!

  • Ha! And you thought euphonium got the boring parts! :D

  • He's sexy and amazing. :)

  • @jaf506,

    it's a York Eminence.

  • @Anoranth Same here!!

  • He makes me want to practice more!

  • 4:15

"Wait, is he... Oh man, he's playing two parts at once. What the hell, man."

  • @Alxariamify its how the song is written, its not two different parts

  • I also play euphonium/baritone and I couldn't even dream of doing this piece!!

  • Yeah, this guy is very smooth, with good control and technique. I see a lot of players not "fingertipping". I think you get better results using the tips, but ya can't fault this guy's results. Probably a Besson horn? The euphonium/american baritone/baritone deal gets a lot of debate, but put this one square in the euphonium category. A super job, and I don't think this arrangement is one done that much. I'll post a link to the simpler version my son did, which seems more common.

  • @jaf506 I'm so glad I'm not the only one who noticed the fingertipping. It really does make playing easier.

And I'm pretty sure it's a Besson. They're quite popular with profession British players. And damned expensive to boot. But that's just instruments in general.

  • @KaraMayonakaSora Its a York (1:57)

  • Euphonium. the gateway drug to tuba

  • That's a Baritone buddy.

  • @SurelyAwesome Um. What? LOL. Thats DEFINITELY a Euphonium.

  • @SurelyAwesome check again buddy. that's a compensating valve euphonium

  • is it me, or is he not playing with his fingertips? I'm not criticizing this man in an way, im just curious, as i play the euphonium too.

  • Oh yeah thats right i play Ephonium!

  • I play the euphonium and he is the best player I have ever heard

  • Was grandfather childs a musician too?

  • @km426 if you wanna train a long-bowman, start with his grandfather

  • @km426 i believe so, his grandfather, father and himself are euphonium players

  • @tswans1234 Incredible.

  • @km426 Are you stupid? They said he was a euphonium player. You are truly an idiot!

  • @sneakybeaver13V2 I know he was a euph player? Never said he wasn't, think you've got the wrong person.

  • @km426 No you are the correct person. You asked "Was grandfather childs a musician too?" Well duh he is they said he was a euphonium player which means he a musician! Damn dude you your fucking head

  • @sneakybeaver13V2 Yes, I simply wanted to know if he played, therefore asking the question to boost my knowledge of their family. It was a simple question for someone to answer and I didnt expect it to get into the top comments, I apologize for not reading all the comment made on the video previously and shall learn to not ask people on Youtube for an answer if all i get is uncalled for abuse.

  • @km426 If you wanted to know then why did you say " I know he was a euph player" if you knew then why when you ask if he was a musician even when its one of the first things the video states?

  • @sneakybeaver13V2 But back when I asked the question It was apparent that David and his father were musicians, I wasnted to know if David's Grandfather was a player aswell.

  • @km426 I know they say that his grandfather was at the beginning of the freaking video!

  • @km426 yes, he was a euphonium player and brass band conductor too.... those apples stay close to the tree!

  • @km426 You didnt listen to the first 30 seconds of the video?

  • His control is unreal!!!

  • I play the euphonium and i would REALLY like to play as well and as fast as him! i am a freshman in hichschool and im a good euphonium player but im NOWHERE near as good as he is!

  • he makes look so easy

  • Meet the guy

  • I would love to

  • I play trumpet and i was always very conceded about what i thought sounded the best of every instrument in the brass. i realized French Horn sounds really pretty but, we played Ave Maria in band and there is a euph solo so i realized the euph sounds the best of all brass instruments and i dont know why im typiong such a long comment!!!????

  • i'm a euphonium player in my band! and i love euphonium. been playing for 7 years now, but i could really learn from this guy!

  • Euphonium is on the rise!!! Im 1st chair Euphonium in the top band at my high school and nearly all advanced level music has a solo for Euphonium, or at the least we have melodic lines. I can tell you right now Euphoniums have more solos and melody than French Horns in a concert band.

  • christ..every video there is a pointless arguement over something retarded.

  • Why can't one of the top comments be positive about the video instead of ragging on other peoples comments?

  • @lazyeddie04

    Welcome to Youtube.....

  • who knows what kind of vaulve system he has in his horn..its not the one that came with ...i think

  • This just blew my mind!!!!!

  • Bravo, magnifico, grazie

  • Great job! Thanks for posting.

  • var.2 blew my mind.

  • THAT IS SOO COOOOOL :D

  • LIPS,

Y U NO PLAY LIKE HIM!!!!

  • Can I just say something?

Don't go looking for euphonium solo videos and then bash the instrument. A true musician appreciates all instruments.

Besides, I play euph and I would never think of switching to trombone. No offense to trombonists, of course. I just like valves! (And DCI doesn't use trombones.)

Also, I fucking love this video. It is godly. I hope I to be half as good as this man at euphonium someday :)

  • Anyone want to know my opinion? Stop arguing about the instruments and just admire the beauty they ALL have to offer!!

  • I love my instruments=] I play the EUPHONIUM, trumpet, and french horn. The euphonium is a beautiful instrument. It helps with all brass players. It helped strengthen my lips so I can play with smaller mouthpieces. My band teacher told us lower brass has melody's that help make the songs sound fuller. It really does.

  • This makes me want to put down my trombone and buy a euphonium!

  • @trombonemassa u can do that they both have the same notes and all u have to do is learn the fingerings i play the euphonium and i use a trombone book..............i dont know y?

  • @poopteloop I know; I can play parts of this piece. I was just saying that is sounds really nice on the euphonium.
