The Spoonful played freshman orientation (of all things) at the college I attended (Washington University in St. Louis) in 1967 and their live version there was even better than the recorded version. A band that, while not perhaps appreciated--since they're in the Rock and Roll Hallof Fame--is not sufficiently appreciated. Sebastian is definitely underappreciated as a songwriter.
For the past 3 hours, I've had this song on repeat. I may be only 22, but I miss the 60's, how divine it must have been to be a part of such a great time of peace and happiness.
@uzi4u182 Funny how I was 13 in 1967 and it was anything but a time of peace and happiness. My memories of the 60s, from hearing the mandated news interrupting the rock n roll music every hour, was about the Bay of Pigs Invasion, civil war in Laos, Cuban Missile Crisis, JFK's assassination, Viet Nam, Watts riots, MLK's assassination, the Tet Offensive,Chicago Democratic Convention, Mi Lai Massacre, the Pueblo Incident, civil war & starving in Biafra, Manson murders. Not much peace or happiness
@2beekate How very true. But it seems as though the hope of peace, love and happiness was very much alive in the people, despite the media and everything else going on. Would you rather have today's situation or the 60's all over?
Great song & memories for me from the autumn of 1967! Agree, one of the most under rated pop music recordings ever. Should have stayed on the charts well into '68 & hit the Top 10. Heard them do it live back in the late 90's. BTW, I still have my copy of that album, "Everything Playing" & its still in good condition after 43 years!

@alive1945 They both used odd instruments this has a mystery instrument can you guess ? give up?its called a marksaphone an autoharp with a little keyboard and hammers on it .
@newhotman1001 and @dipsey7773333 we did take the great music of the 50s and 60s for granted THEN, but we were busy trying to figure out things like who we were and what life was all about and all of that while being in our teens. That was pretty tough. There's a saying something like "Life is what you live while making other plans". That's very true. I think that you only really remember the great times after they have passed.
@dipsey7773333 I just wanted to hear this today and saw your comment. How true that we took it for granted then. I would like to think that I knew then I was so lucky to grow up in the 60's but you are right, I took it for granted. Still what a great time!

john sebastians reel name is Nemo Wyszoosky. he born in Polen in 1946 when hes parents flee to england. later they go to US, where they live in Chicago making cars. in these days Chicago was called the motor city because they make so many motors there. little john was already fameous for singing sexy songs when he get thbroat sickness. his mother give him sweet sugar nd meds so it inspirers him to sat lovin sopoonfull,
I love this song. Next to "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice" this is my favorite Spoonful song. Remember in 1966 everybody wore the candy striped t-shirts? I had several in different stripes. What a great time to grow up as a teenager. It will never be like that again.
@lrd9999 I agree, what a beautiful pop song. It seemed to me that when this came out Sebastian was at the peak of his creativity and it all seemed to go in another direction for him after that. He went solo, did a lot of really basic folk stuff and pretty much dropped off the radar until his Welcome Back Kotter song brought him back into the spotlight. He owned 1966-67 on the charts.
This is my second favorite Spoonful song after Darlin' Be Home Soon. I think their later songs were much more musically interesting than their earlier songs. Bravo 1967!!!!
why that 1 dislike is on here is a mystery.love this lovin' spoonful tune :)

The present always pales when compared to the past. Nostalgia filters out the ordinary in life, and allows wonderful memories to shine.
