The Montego!!! Yep my friend had one with the faults! ECU packs up regulary at a stiff cost of £80 in the 80's could pay the electric bill for a whole year with that then! Didnt Noel also do a Freelander/Discovery advert too?
That Montego estate (0:49) didn't last long! The vehicle details for B674 AOX are: Date of Liability 27 11 1984 Date of First Registration 03 10 1984 Year of Manufacture 1984 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1994CC CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type Petrol Export Marker Not Applicable Vehicle Status Unlicensed Vehicle Colour RED Vehicle Type Approval null
It wasn't called BMC Rover. At no point was the company ever called BMC Rover. BMC was Austin, Morris and Jaguar. Leyland owned Rover, Triumph and Leyland lorries. Both companies merged to become BL. In the 80s this became austin-rover.
And no the cars weren't crap. Poorly build initially and the Maestro and Montego never had looks on their side. But by the end all good cars that lived far too long.
I bought 1887 MG Maestro 2.0 EFI in 1991 and had it for 3 years. I then sold it to my father in law who ran it for another 4 years. Then tha local hairdresser bought it and she had it for 2....then it was with a young git who ruined it. It was quick and fairly cheap to run. It handled like a lump of lard though. Problems with it were few and far between
The Metro was a fantastic car - it reinvented the supermini sector. When it was reinvitented as the Rover Metro - it won 'what car' car of the year two years in a row! The problem for the Metro though - was that it lived to long.
The filth should have bought british vehicles then we might still have a car industry! in hull they drive proton FFS!! and watford seat and fu@kin skoda! makes you weep
Um, why should anyone buy crap cars? The British car companies deserved to get smashed because they weren't serving the customer. Typical British worker expects the customer to support his half-assed job.
mum had a black mg maestro and dad had a montego! i know mum switched to Pegeuot shortly after much better quality!we had a metro for a while too metro was a decent car not to many probs.
Erm. The metro was class leading back in 1984. OK - it had a few minor build quality problems - but it was the sucessor of the Mini - and a much better car.
Secondly, MG Maestros as shown on the advert are classics. To buy a mint one will set you back quite a lot of money. Much faster than a Golf GTi mk1/mk2 and it was cheaper to buy and much better looking, especially in black or red.
The Montego for what its worth, was better than the rather sad Sierra.
Yeah, but the Metro just didn't have the same image as the Mini, though the MG Turbo version was pretty cool (defective alloys which broke away when the car was pushed too hard). The MG Maestro was a nice car, though the Escort RS Turbo and Vauxhall Astra GTE and SRi 16v were better. The Montego was actually a good looking car -- There's one where I live and it looks all right. MG Turbo version had 150bhp, 0-60: 7.3secs, 126mph (phwar!), though the cossie Sierra could kick its arse
Well, given that it was an Austin Montego Estate, and with their 'dubious' quality reputation, she probably did far more damage to the car than it did to her.

Knowing what I do about 80s Rover Group cars, this ad almost seems sarcastic in hindsight...
After all, he did describe the squishy ride of that MG Maestro as "terrific." :P
