Were they live on TV When Ken used explicit language? I don't care that he did, I'm just wondering if people were upset over that, seeing as Dale Jr. got penalized for saying "Shit".
This was live satellite feed of a race that they showed later. Back then, if you had the old huge dish, and knew where to look, you could grab live event like this. Also, this was back when NASCAR ran the race on the morning of July 4, no matter what day of the week it fell on. The announcers audio of the last few laps was then re-recorded as they watched a tape and everything was bleeped out.
Lol back in those days they didn't bother to cut the audio whenever someone swore and thanks to that logic, we get to here Kenny Schrader at his best after flipping.
lol nothing like a great racecar driver showing emotion at the end of a long hot day, that's Ken Schrader. Also I agree about the announcers, terrible. I miss those days when Ned Jarrett, Bob Jenkins, Benny Parsons and Ken Squire did all the races!
OMG! What a dumbass announcer! When Ken Schrader got lose and started the wreck, that idiot wasn't even looking at the track you could tell but his loooooooong delay before he noticed Schrader wrecking
Anyone who wants to whine about today's TV coverage of auto racing needs to look at old ABC coverage of auto racing. It was awful back in the '80s! NBC sucked at it too, especially with CART races. The '88 CART Pocono 500 was one of the wort broadcasts I've ever seen.
around 5:45 you can hear one of the announcers say "we'll have to redo that whole lap" if you listen closely...he wanted to edit his horrible coverage of the last lap. not knowing who wins the race until after it's over,as an announcer that is terrible
The scoring was wrong. Keith thought Allison had the lead, but then the scoring said Allison was a lap down, so Keith deferred to that. Blame the scoring!
On a funny note, notice the end of this video. The person who taped this race edited the broadcast version's pre-race and post-race in to give the raw feed an intro and post-race (I know because I got this same copy from the trading circuit). Notice that Schrader's F-bomb remained in the tape-delayed broadcast version. They didn't edit it out!
@battalionfan888 NO THEY DIDNT HAVE SMALLER ENGINES,NASCAR WENT TO A 358 CUBIC INCH LIMIT IN 1975,AND ITS BEEN 358 EVER SINCE.NOT ONLY THAT BUT BILL ELLIOT TRIED TO RUN SMALLER CUBES IN THE NINETY'S AND NASCAR WOULDNT LET HIM,HE WANTED TO OUT GAS MILEAGE THE WITH SAY A 302,AND NASCAR SAID ,NO
Actually, for this race and the summer race at Talladega, they used a smaller carburetor. It was'nt until the '88 Daytona 500 that they put the restrictor plate on the motors...Unfortunately...
@e521soediv yes, this was their first time at daytona after the plates were mandated. The talladega race earlier that spring is the race where bobby allison almost went into the grandstand at 212 mph
@e521soediv The engines have been 358 Cubic Inches....Which is there maximum limit since the 70's when they stopped running big blocks. IE: 427 CUI, 428, 429....They ran a smaller carburetor this rac (Same size as they ran in busch series...390 CFM. Which slowed them from 210 that previous Feb. To 198. Engine's were the same size. That 390 carb is larger than the plates they use now but nevertheless killed the horsepower.
Later in the day, ABC re-recordered the commentary, and what we heard here was not was what aired. That was not uncommon in the days of tape-delayed races.
Nope. Fighting Illini sounds like something I'd need to take an antibiotic for.
It was just flat terrible. I guess the modern day example would be trying to get Joe Buck or somebody to call the Daytona 500. With Tim McCarver as color analyst. God that's a nightmare.
For all of those out there who feel that ESPN/ABC's coverage of NASCAR now is bad, just watch this... This is the posterchild of what not to do in NASCAR coverage. Why Keith Jackson ever was sent to cover racing is a mystery.
To defend Keith a little, though, absolutely no one knew that Bobby was on the lead lap until the end. I've heard that the MRN broadcasters were just as confused. Plus, I've read a report from a fan who was there, and he said that Allison wasn't put up as the leader on the scoreboard until right before taking the checkered. That being said, Keith wasn't the greatest, but he tried.
I did think Donnie Allison did a good job as an analyst, though.
I, too, was at this race ... sitting just past the start/finish line ... got a great photo of Schrader upside down.
You are absolutely correct. Everyone thought Bobby Allison was a lap down ... I was listening to MRN on the headset radio ... they, too, thought Allison was a lap down and thought Buddy Baker had won the race for a few seconds. Bobby's number was never on the scoreboard as the leader.
Was a shame to see the last caution. Dave Marcis had the race in the bag.
Thanks for posting this satellite feed!! I only remember seeing the "Wide World of Sports" version back in '87. It was tough back then to see the races...not many were broadcast live. I used to have to hunt through the TV Guide to find the race coverage (if any). But yeah, ABC was not good at all broadcasting these events back in the '80s. I like how the broadcaster said they would have to redo it because he did not know where the hell Allison was running :)
Until this raw feed came out, though, no one knew about that confusion. They re-dubbed the coverage when they showed the race later in the day, so to the general viewer it sounded like they knew Bobby was on the lead lap all along.
