To say punk is/isn't dead, is to acknowledge that punk ever "lived", i.e. existed, which requires some set of parameters, qualifications, or at least guidelines by which to establish what punk is/was, which in and of itself violates punk's basic principles (which they themselves already do) effectively negating its very essence.

You cannot say that the American HC movement hasn't influenced Oi/Street punk, that's all I have to say for I do not care about who or when did punk start.
Steve Jones is claimed to be a punk, yet he betrayed it.

He never had the ideals or beliefs of punk, nor did the Sex Pistols have that lifestyle, what they did was spit on their fans/interviewers and stay at high class hotels. They were just into the riches and popularity. His views have nothing to do with punk the guy sold punk out.
The leather jackets, mohawks, hardcore scene were as I believe started in the US, in Britain plaid pants, bondage gear, pins etc...
