  • i dont get it

  • @holyguy95 the town's name is 'Wank'. In British English, it means 'to jerk off',

  • It turns out that, among many other weird place names in America, there are two towns, quite close to each other, named Sodom and Gomorrah in a valley. Be sure to get fire insurance if you go there.

  • Sounds like the start of a great weekend out!!

  • Absolutely, positively....classic!!! This is a keeper of all time.

  • Haha! Glad you liked it! It's childish, but sooo worth it! ;D

  • LOL is sooo right! The jokes just wrote themselves in that place!

  • aaah, i gave 4* by mistake, it should have been 5!!

  • Hahaha! It probably didn't even deserve 4 stars Flo! Thanks for the rating though. Glad you liked it.

  • So you had to be Wankers, but you chose not to continue on Fucking? Hmmm... I have to wonder about you, now. :)

  • LOL! I still laugh just thinking about this video! That was a very odd day out. Random coincidence, the people in the car are staying at my place at the moment!

  • I'm at work right now and can only watch without sound, will come back later. :)

btw: I'm pretty sure the correct word for a person living in Wank is Wanker. ummm. yeah.

  • LOL! Yeah, this video is pretty sound-dependent but it's a good thing you didn't have it blasting out through the office!!

Seriously? That's the real term? o_O

  • hehe, ok that WAS childish, but fun! ;D

About the term: I'm not 100% sure, but "Wanker" would be the "natural" way to say for a German.... *g*

  • LOL! Yeah, I guess if it doesn't have the English meaning, then that would make sense.

Hee hee! Childish but fun is a speciality!! I just try to tone it down for the public videos... ;D

  • oh, I'm definitely pro-childishness! :D

  • ok, I did a quick Google search. Seems like "Wank" dates back from an old German word for "hillside" or "slope".

  • LOL!! I sure hope you didn't do that Google search on a work computer!! Could leave an interesting history file!!

That does leave us with the question of where the English slang word came from. I might go looking myself now (my computer, my rules!)

LOL! Yep, I figured that was your stance on childishness!! ;D

  • JAAAAA! Wank! Fucking! Hilarious!

It looks like you guys had fun! :)

  • Ja Genau! I thought we were going to pass out we were laughing so hard!

OMG this video is such a sad testimony to the Australian sense of humour!

  • Hell yeah! I would have been laughing and taking tons of pics with the signs too! Classic! :)

  • It will be interesting to see what my future experiences will be. I'll be retiring within the next 27 months. As soon as I settle into my new post-retirement lifestyle, I plan to begin to travel on a regular basis, if my cat will permit me. ;) I will travel to some places just to see what they are like; but others are candidates for re-location. This place has many good qualities, but it has added 143K new residents a year each of the 35 years I have been here. I want a smaller town. Thanks.

  • Yes, but choose wisely. It can be very difficult to crack a new social network as an adult. You have to make sure there is the right blend of people or you have a couple of contacts in the area who can introduce you around. I'm sure you've thought of all that though.

Travel is amazing. I can't believe what it has done for my life.

  • It really depends on who you are as to whether you can make connections in small town America. If you fit the demographics of the area you enter, you will do fine; but if you do not, you could have some serious problems being accepted. You are right about the contrasts. Even within most states small towns in one part of the state are significantly different from those in another part. Cities tend to be more alike in that they share much diversity. The small towns tend to be mono-cultural.

  • I'm reasonably adaptable. Even though I may not actually fit in, I still play well with strangers. Given a certain reasonable set of paramaters, I'll find someone to hang out with. That tends to remove the demographic aspect of it. Being an English speaking foriegner in the US goes a long way though. People are curious about you which is a great icebreaker. (This works less well in big cities but is still true.) As an American travelling in the US, you need to work harder & luck is a factor

  • Michael, I have been intrigued by your observations about "big city America" in contrast to "the smaller towns in the mid-West of the USA." I am curious about your perceptions. I would like to see you vlog on what you see these as. I have no experience with the midwest, but I live in the fastest growing city in the US, a true international city with the world's busiest airport. I have also lived in and visited small towns in both the southwest and the southeast. Curious about what you think?

  • I'd be unlikely to do a vlog about it David, but I find that America is full of contrasts. A lot of my impressions really have to do with the people I'm around though - there is a big difference between visiting LA on my own, and staying there with family.

Small town America makes it possible to make those connections with people where they previously didn't exist. You start the day alone in LA, you finish it alone. Do the same in WI & you'll wind up at someone's house for a BBQ.

  • I am very impressed with her. In spite of the fact that I am old enough to be her grandfather, she is more like me than 99.9% of the people I have found on YouTube.

Your phrase "how she fits into the society she finds herself" reminds me of a comment I recently encountered about the films of Australian Peter Weir. All of them concern people who are struggling to live in societies where they do not fit. That's my story as well. Something to think about. Thanks for the reply.

  • Ah - in that case, I'm very glad you've found her. She's pretty remarkable.

  • Michael, thanks for your reply. I think a small misunderstanding has developed over language usage. I am very new to the internet and do not know how to use emoticons effectively. Some of what I wrote was tongue in cheek and some serious. Jennifer's comment above suggests that SHE is prudish and Australia is quite the opposite. I may have misunderstood her, but that is what I was playing off. Reality often clashes with the false public images generated by the mass media. Know what I mean?

  • Haha! Yes, it is quite difficult to convey subtlety in the comments sometimes. I see what you mean now and the misunderstanding was all mine.

You're right in what Jen says above, but I know her very well, and we had been discussing this video off-air for a long time before it saw the light of day. I know she chose her words very carefully! We have had long conversations on the subject of how she fits into the society she finds herself in.

  • I watched this a week or so ago but did not leave a comment because I didn't know what to say. We Americans don't wank you know? Or don't you know? I remember the first time I heard the term. It was a British film, very good, but I will not name it, just that it had Sam Neil in it. I figured it out from context, but I don't think I have ever heard anyone actually speak that word in my presence. I think Jennifer is right about the reputation your part of the world has acquired. Prudish? ;)

  • Yeah - I think if you're not exposed to British comedy, it can be a little lost on you. Also it means the word has no impact, so the jokes here make a lot less sense.

LOL - um - yeah, not the greatest reputation to have! ;D

  • Actually I am a little jealous ;) But then I am a senior citizen, and that may have a lot to do with it. You know post-WWII childhood and 50's teenager.

There are a lot of folks in the U.S. who are envious of you guys and would like to live there if they could. The reputation may not be real, but people believe it.

  • Oh thanks David, that's sweet of you to say. I don't think Australia has a prudish reputation, more the opposite really, but it does have a certain simpler point of view than big city America. I sometimes see a closer parallel in say, the smaller towns in the mid-West of the USA.

Sometimes it feels as if there are too many people in the US all promoting their particular cause and unnecessarily complicating things for Americans who just want to live their lives.

  • Wow, Michael. Just wow. I bet if there is a high school there, the kids are super proud once they get a diploma from Wank High.

I wish all of you a happy Wankmus, and a happpy road trip! (sorry I've been missing on comments, been sorta afk from YT). Take care!

  • LOL Mike! I thought we had covered every possible joke, but that was one we missed! Oh, and it now makes me think of getting arrested by the Wank Police...

No worries - I keep seeing bits of you around Stickam and Twitter and that sort of stuff, so I knew you were OK.

  • The man standing by the Wank sign is priceless. Well done.

  • Oh you should have seen the footage that got edited out... ;DDDD

  • Does that mean the people who live there are Wankers? :)

  • Oh I SO hope they are! That would just top it all off!

  • Indeed! Thanks for sharing this... gave me a good laugh. :)

  • hahahha Ah my god. :D Love it!

  • Your comment has me LMAO! There is SUCH a range of reactions to this video! ;D

  • Ain't it a wonderful world full of colour. hehe

Thanks for sharing this video with us sir. Superb editing.

    =)

  • Yes, it's as if the thousand year history of the place was all prearranged for my amusement on a cold winter's day.

Thankyou for your polite praise! I was wondering how this would be received by a particular subset of subscribers. With grace as always.

Like I said in the info, I sincerely hope this is the most childish video I ever make.

  • It's a worry! Not sure if I'd read that map correctly! I think we'd miss that town.

  • Ah yes. Maybe I should have included a language warning on this video! I put a warning on the 'Catacombs' one, and people just laughed! I guess even if people try to avoid using these words in life though, they've certainly come across them before.

Yes - I can't imagine programming those directions into a talking GPS with a car full of kids! Try explaining THAT to Grandma when you all got home...

  • Nothing like a small little Wank in winter!

LOL - who the heck named these towns??

  • I'm not sure if I'd rather they were named by committee, or an individual with a sense of humour!

I was saying to ZachrielCL last night on msn that the Mitsubishi Pajero SUV they sell here is the 'Montero' in Spanish countries because it means the same thing!

  • obvious question that was probably brought up in other comments, but I just woke up :P ..so I'll ask anyways:

If you live there, would you call yourself a Wanker?

  • Oh I SO hope they do call themselves that! Poor people when they go to travel the world...

BTW - what's with you guys having Polar Bears now?! Made the news here. Big earthquake - nothing. Some journalists get too close and something fuzzy gets shot and the press are all over it! I thought Icel. was Polar Bear free!

  • We are supposed to be polar bear free.. but running into one does happen, once every blah years.. but now we had 2.. which is just beyond weird.. global warming FTL..

  • oh.. and now we're looking for the 3rd one apparently... yeah, i dunno what's going on..

  • *crosses Iceland off the list*

You'd think global warming would keep them further away. Maybe Reykjavik Zoo wants to cash in on the Knut thing...

Very weird. Slightly alarming. Run to Germany and hide! They have badgers...

  • well, since the north pole isn't solid ground, if it melts.. they gotta go somewhere :S

thankfully they're mostly up north.. 5+ hour drive from here.. so I'm safe from them ;) lol

  • LOL! But before they were in Canada, a 5 hour flight away!! Closer, closer...

;DDD All good. Just funny in comparison to the real news of the earthquake.

  • You know this is not my kind of humour nor language (despite living in Australia, lol), but I enjoyed seeing you in hysterics ;) And it was a very beautiful town!

  • LOL! I was wondering if I'd even rate a comment on this one Jen! Thanks for finding something nice to say!

  • I think we need to do something about Australia's global image, everyone thinks that other town is here and not in Austria, hehe! Or we could just get everyone to call the country Österreich to avoid the confusion, but umlauts always put English-speakers off, lol

  • Which town? (rofl)

Well we do have some sketchy names, but I think single entendres are pushing it even for Australia!

Yeah, I don't like umlauts either. Scrambled eggs only for me. ;D

  • yeahh right, I'm sure she'd say that word XD or town's name in this case =P

  • Hahaha! When I saw the title for the video I was like... "Wow, he must be THE stud to be posting this here!". I had no idea what the word meant though, I had to wiki it, but I knew it wasn't something innocent XD

The crazy part is that is looked like a really nice place to visit, for reasons other than its name!

  • LOL! I just put it into Wiki, and I'd hate to have seen your thought process! Yeah, it's a pretty childish video, but come on, I could hardly go there and NOT film now could I?

Oh it really was lovely - like I said in the video, it's quite a pretty little town. I have a lot of still photos from that day when we were near a beautiful frozen lake that stretched out to the mountains.

    But it WAS funny...

  • Oh my!! I came to see how you had incorporated the same music I had used...and had to kind of squint cos the title got me all bashful (being a shy Sunbeam -type) - but I found myself giggling with you all when you had the yellow sign footage. I agree - there is just something funny about it....in a silly-dilly childish way :)

What a video - I have to give you 5 stars for outrageousish-ness....(as someone we know might say!!) Sunbeam :)

  • Oh - um - yes... I guess I should have warned you before I left a comment that might have had you come looking. Um, somewhat of a deviation from what you would have thought of someone that found your channel through Angelo!

Like I said in the info, I hope this is the most childish video I ever make...

Thankyou for the stars - I shall treasure them as a badge of your courage!

  • ROFL! The video was hilarious on its own, but some of the commentary (Hoar frost, the town of Cock thing) had me laughing so much it hurt. You know how the Germans name their racetracks, right? By essentially adding the word "ring" to the town's name. I'm wondering if the town of Cock has a racetrack?

  • rofl! *can't stop laughing*

Oh it gets better, apparently some of the current soccer matches are being played at a stadium in Berne, Switzerland - called Wankdorf.

The name of the home team?

    The Young Boys.

That's right folks, we'd like a warm hand for the Wankdorf Young Boys!!!!

I SO hope they don't have a priest as a coach...

  • LMAO, If only the people who named these towns knew what would happen in the future...

  • See I had to work the day so I only got to see this 10 hours later. We aren't on the same hours anymore ***sobs***

  • LOL! At the rate I post videos, I don't think the time zones make too much of a difference. I went to bed soon after this anyway, dreaming of single entendres...

I hope you shaped up OK at work after Stickam!

  • Well I actually started o fall asleep around 1:30a.. At 1:45 my roomate's boyfriend came over and decided it was the perfect time to party loud! I went nuts... He has a bellowing voice... I went nuts... did I say that already? I got 3 hours sleep and went to work in a coma, came home and slept... Grumpy : /

  • Oh poor Pip! Considering you only had a max of 5 hours available, that must have been awful. At least when you're up late you're vewwy vewwy quiet...

I hope the extra sleep helped, but I know it can mess you up all week when that happens, plus the jetlag from the shift change...

Big hug. Now get some more sleep...

  • Hahahaaha You Wanker! lol Great editing I must say. You using WMM or iMovie? I have my Youtube setting in HQ at all times so I see HQ without having to click on each video individually. I wanna go to Fucking, Australia!

  • OK, that's _very_ Freudian Pip! Fucking is in Austria, not Australia! ;DD Interesting that Gary misread it the same way! What DO you people think of us?!! o_O

Oh, with your Canadian/Australian mix, you'd appreciate why Aussies get photographed under the sign at a 'Roots Kids' store!

Just WMM. It has it's limits, but is simple to use and free. I keep looking at more sophisticated stuff, but haven't decided yet.

  • Rofl, you sure got a kick out of that town! It's funny how people create names of towns like that! I'd imagine that people use the word wank and wanker more in Aussie than in the US =P still wicked funny though

  • Oh, we were dying laughing starting two days before when we first saw it on the map! By the time we got there, we'd used up all our creative material and were reduced to fits of the giggles!

There's all sorts of stuff the world over where it translates badly. For example, in India, Dikshit is a very respectable last name. That's one where I don't make jokes, because it's directly at an individual.

Yes! Wank and Wanker are used A LOT here, same as the UK.

  • oh and to add to the humor, the car you were in is another brilliant joke hahaha =D

  • LOL! It was a borrowed car, so I have to say nice things about it! It just wasn't that - um - speedy with 4 adults and luggage.

It was also the 'Palm Beach' edition of the car which seemed very odd amongst all the snow.

Funny thing is, I don't think they sold the 106 here. Before this trip, I thought the _206_ was as small as they went!

  • OK... The WANK/DON'T WANK sign got you 5 stars alone. :)

  • Cheers Horse! Sometimes life just gives you a sign...

Maybe it's a reminder to the townsfolk when they head to the city?

  • LMAO This is hilarious! Wank AND Fucking?! hahahahaha I think the only weird place I have visited is Cock. And yes, LOL, its a place.

  • OK, so you know how these jokes go then Shauna?

    *cough*

"So you know how to find Cock when you need to?"

"I love a girl who knows her way around Cock."

    *cough*

OMG I also just though of the 'You can take the girl out of...' line. *shakes head laughing*

    It never ends.

Oh the other thing that amused us was that Wank and Fucking were so close to each other! Looking at the satellite photos, they have a similar feel, but aren't the same.

  • No Wank! LMAO!! This was great!

  • Yes! There's a lesson for all of us there Jenn!

  • wow those are some crazy town names haha. Especially Fucking, Austria. There are some crazy drivers over there!

  • LOL! Yeah I had to include that Rich! It's just too cool to have left out. Apparently the town sign gets stolen A LOT.

I think that last guy went past us at about double our speed, so in the 140 mph range. It's pretty normal there! Yikes!

  • Haha a town full of Wankers :)

Are you sure that white stuff was snow? ;)

  • rofl! I didn't get out to check... Maybe I shouldn't assume anything!

It was only a small town, and there were a lot of trees...

  • Haha! Those white trees looked freaky. Love the well framed pictures of Wank signs hahaha, oh man. The childish humour giggles makes this video hilarious. "Continue on Fucking" LOL love it, great vid, thanks for sharing :D

    D

  • Haha! Thanks D! Nice of you to swing by. Hell yeah, childish humour never gets old!

Ironically (with all the rude words) the trees are covered in hoar frost!

Man we should both be asleep...

  • HQ version hasn't shown up for me yet but I'll watch again when it does.

I recall an old Graham Norton show in which he made a prank call to the nearest German Tourist Board office expressing interest in visiting Wank, and similar trans-language hilarity ensued.

Much funnier with footage - LOL! We never really grow up, do we? ;)

  • I SO hope we don't grow up Martyn, or this video is going to fall very flat!

Yeah, there are just TOO many jokes that could be made, and we made every single one of them on the way there. It loses something if you pronounce it the German way 'Vonk'.

    So we didn't.

  • Admirable restraint. :) Is Fucking similarly less hilarious when properly pronounced? (As is obvious, I've never gotten to grips with German)

  • Nah - I don't think there's any way to make that not funny! It's probably pronounced Focking or something similar, but I've never heard it said by a native speaker.

I guess I'll just have to wait for PalpitatioCordis to show up!

  • in German it is pronounced "Fooking" :)

  • Despite the content of this video which is truly hilarious, I'm really laughing at how old this footage is! And I thought I was behind! LOL

And "Fucking" Australia is actually a place? Oh em gee!

  • Austria, not Australia! Hard to drive home from Germany in an afternoon! ;D

Swear to God. Punch it into Google Maps.

Hahaha! Yeah, well, I've always said I was behind in editing... I've put up a lot of random videos since that trip, so the normal ones sort of have to fit around them. Only one more to go. I'll see if I can post it before I'm back there! ;D

  • Did you meet any Wankers? LOL

  • No, we were the only ones I saw!! rofl!
