I think that the issue of being amateur or professional shouldn't be discussed starting that far by looking for philosophic definitions or similar exercises. A simple fact in my opinion makes the difference: the amateur for purely practical reasons can dedicate something like 200 to 400 hrs per year to his passion. Because his job, familily and/or other basic daily needs impose this. A professional managed to make playing his job, i.e. to dedicate 800/1000/maybe 2000 hrs/year to playing.
Ok. I admit that my comments were a little "sour grapish". This performance was actually very polished and quite professional and could stand up against most "professional" artists. I guess my gripe is this- why call these events "amateur" at all. If they play like professional, then call it that.
I voted thumbs down grigor99 because your comments are pointless. frankly they sound like sour grapes. i was a struggling artist for years (Juilliard, '61)and never made the career I thought I deserved. But if you love music, you play because you must, amateur or professional. This a beautiful piece. very well played. Period.
While I applaude the achievement of these "amateur" artists, it's sad that there are so many "professional" artists that never get the chance to play with an orchestra because one: they ARE professionals and two: they are not famous enough to get any gigs with a real orchestra.
The difference between amateur and professional is 1) amateur likes to do it, professional loves to do it; 2) amateur does it good, professional does it absolutely perfect. Other circumstances (chance, orchestra, fame) don't matter. Which "category" is this man, man?

this is pretty awful sounding. the phrases are choppy, the orchestra and pianist are not together, and it does a disservice to this great score.
