@bullogh Szekely is good, but not in the league of Ghiaurov, Christov, Siepi, and a couple of Russians (sorry the names don't come up). Even with a discount for the poor recording technique of the time.
Hmm...one of the biggest voices ever and listen to how he sounds with the mics placed AWAY from him and NOT ENCHAINING his sound like the singers do now days. They cheat so much now days that Florez sounds bigger than this! ROFL! INSANE!
he does sound rather more like a dramatic baritone. probably not high enough to sing Verdi baritone roles, but certainly something like Scarpia. this sounds a bit low for him if you ask me.
The great Ghiaurov at the end of his wonderful carriere with his expressive voice and his dignity together with the energy of Muti! Thank You for posting this treasure...

For a young bass try Alexander Tsimbalyuk

si è il maestro Muti che suona al piano in un concerto tenuto al tearo alighieri di ravenna

He's a awesome singer but I prefer Cesare Siepi.

Amazing, should be better known in the modern world, he could have really put basses back into the modern scene, rather than it being 'tenorised'.

Dont worry, Basses are coming back!

Only one singer did this aria better: Siepi

Great basso. It´s a pity that no one of the same kind came out after him.

This is, above all, voice! A great BIG voice. He was an extraordinary artist, but the voice he had was unique!

This is perfection. I cannot stop watching it. The amazingness of his vocalism will never cease to amaze me.

Ghiaurov was a great artist, with perhaps the most beautiful basso cantante voice of his generation --
stevevandien 5 years ago
basso cantante ? uhm...in my opinion his voice had a different color, more "deep".
Anyway, he's the best bass for me :))
babbo123456 5 years ago
I like Ghiaurov's voice, but my favourite is Boris Christoff.
Moffolover 4 years ago
Probably more deep, but I am sure that he could have sung verdi bariton if he had wanted it!!
