Love the Pumpkins, love JC but I'd like to see another musician in this band. Something to give the sound a little more depth and variation since they're doing instrumental music. Jimmy is a fabulous drummer and the bass player is also very good but the guitarist wouldn't really hold my interest for too long. Just my opinion.
This is REALLY cool. I remember seeing (and MIXING) Herb Alexander's off-shoot band LAUNDRY when he took a break from PRIMUS. Sometimes the real talent is behind the kit and not out front....
BTW-Billy Corgan is an excellent musician and songwriter, but if you meet him in person? ASSHOLE!!!!! No wonder JC is doing his own thing!
That album over all was a great album. Really good listen. Put it on sometime and see what I mean. Nice trippy stuff and aggressive stuff and life begins again.
i heard that jimmy is going to do another complex record a few months ago. anyone here anything new on that? any touring plans at all, would love to see him play live.
I agree. Jazz drummers are usually the best. I'm appalled that guys like Art Blakey are never mentioned in "Greatest Drummer" polls. All the rock greats like Neil Pert and John Bonham took inspiration from guys like Buddy Rich.
R U HIGH This is a far cry from boring. This song sounds like the pumkins which makes my theory all that easier to believe. Jimmy was and is the PUMPKINS sound. Not Billy, although he is a huge part of it.
@idrum4jesus2 I agree with you this is a FAR cry from boring. However I will disagree with you on Jimmy being the biggest part of the Pumpkins sound. It seems to me like all 4 contributed pretty equally to the Pumpkins sound.
Even when D'arcy left and was replaced by Melissa, there was quite an audible difference in the live shows.
(that's also why zeitgeist sounds ridiculously different to Gish-Machina, all 4 are quintessential)
I'd say Jimmy was a big part of SP, but it's totally untrue that the band split the work equally. I mean, Billy and Jimmy recorded all of Siamese Dream by themselves. All that stuff you hear on the album, that's just two guys overlaying things.
Iha and Wretzy wrote some songs, but for the most part, Billy controlled the musical direction.
Jimmy was a big part cuz Billy can't really control the drumming since he's not a drummer. And Jimmy brought his distinctive jazz style.
@thisxgreatxdecay Yeah I didn't really mean the work, I know Billy was/is a bit of a control freak in the studio ha ha (although it seemed to produce great results, didn't it?)
I more meant the sound, which though as you say would have been controlled by Billy, he would have been strongly influenced by his interactions with James and Darcy, if not musically then socially. Although I do see your point, because I don't know that the extent of their influence would have been 50%
True, neither of us could ever know just how much was contributed by each member artistically. We weren't there. But whoever made it, it's damn good music!
pumpkins made him happier. he sounds so dragged out by himself. its good drumming but overall pretty lame and stale, just sound. There are no lyrics that command the army of fans to flock. fly back to the pumpkins jimmy, fly back!!
@OwrKeeng while you have the right t your opinion, its truly comparing "appels and oranjes". Chamberlin was inspired by soo many different drummers including Peart but he is by all respects a jazz drummer. its too hard to compare their styles. Jimmy is my favourite drummer, but yu can't just flat out say he's better than Peart.
i dunno we could possibly team up and stop any flame war with some common sense and maybe eventually increase in numbers to stop the console war and Metal vs Rap war. We may even obtain a nobel peace prize by earning it unlike obama lol
It's interesting to me that with time, the impact and style of the Pumpkins is more clearly seen. They really created a sub-genre in rock that has yet to be populated by anyone else. You can really see it in the way that both Jimmy and Corgan seem to have kept searching for the sound that they created, yet never quite finding it again. May be why the Pumpkins have never been able to truly reform - that sound was one of a kind. I can't wait to hear the bands who follow in their footsteps!
This was the Drumpad show? WOW. It's sounds a lot better than it did there. I really enjoyed that whole gig. The best of the best played. I saw them play the Field Musem gig, too, and the acoustics there were perfect.
In my humble opinion, JC is one of the most innovative drummers in the last 20 years - he always comes up with real mad stuff that no one else does - great drummer :)
The one he has in front of his bassdrum is called yamaha subkick - it is a micing technique from the early 70`s or something. A speaker used as microphone.
as thetrainthetrain said it's the Yamaha Subkick which is a low frequency capture device that can capture low end. I've seen them used live and they really do help capture that low end better than a standard microphone.
What about Phil Rudd then, his drum beat are so perfect for what is being played and he will add slight fill will everything else has had their go! Phil is a ledgend..
But there is no real way to tell, who the best drummer is, everyone has different taste and thats what makes drumming so fun and creative!
What makes Jimi special isn't technical... there are faster drummers out there. What makes Jimi one of the greatest drummers who ever lived is that he mixes complex parts that nevertheless fit perfectly with the songs and never get in the way of the other instruments or get 'show-offy". This guy is not only technically outstanding, he has that more intangible thing called "musicality" in spades. That's what puts him over the run-of-the-mill virtuosi out there.
So much power, finesse, feel, and musicality in one man.

Oh and wikipedia also says that for 2006-2007 he's used for the most part the Jimmy Chamberlin Signature model. He also switches to a Pearl Sensitone, I think brass.
I know its his personal preference, but he is trying to play smooth, flowing guitar parts on an SG, someone put a Telecaster in that guys hands.
