@Zaranyzerak Impressive review on Voltron. It was my first Anime i watched before i got into Dragon Ball and Gundam, i learned alot of new info on Voltron :)
Thanks for the review. You helped me decide to get all the collector tins for Voltron. All the work that was put in to remaster this. I have to agree with you - Wow! I already have all the dvds for Golion and love that too. Keep this up!
Yup; mine has the "smooth" surface tin; not the embossed one. The DVD case is just the ordinary standard one; not the cool, fold-out one like I was expecting. And the discs don't include any special features; which was the deal-breaker for me. I just bought another one; it arrived in the mail on Friday, and it's just like the one reviewed by Zaranyzerak. I gave the other one to my 6 year old nephew, who only wants the cartoons anyway.
I just got my Voltron DVD set a few days ago and I am enjoying them very much so. The only thing though is my Collection set 1 is a little different than yours. The tin itself is completely flat (i.e. no indentations) and the disks are in a regular DVD case, not the fold out envelope thingy. Oh, and disk 3 has different artwork than the other 2 disks and there's no extras... Can you tell me what that's all about? Apparently, it's an official release from Media Blasters but I'm a little confused.
@vgfan80 Apparently, there are different versions that were released - all official. Best bet is to ask for the collection like the one described by Zaranyzerak. I just got mine from a seller on Ebay and he mentioned that the smooth tins are usually requested by some companies like Walmart. So I asked if it was the "bumpy" embossed tin and he told me yes. These are out of print so get them while you can. Hope that helps.
@pmgpc69 I had a feeling that they might've released multiple versions of the sets; maybe they re-released the sets in smooth tins and got rid of the bonus features and the episode booklet to maybe cut costs. Anyway, thanks for clearing things up.
I just bought the blue lion collection from an Amazon seller, and was shocked to see that the tin wasn't embossed, there was no booklet or extra anime works DVD, and the 3 discs came in a standard DVD case, not the one that folds out like in your video. The set doesn't look to be a bootleg; it looks like it came from the manufacturer. It just seems to be different than the one on your video.
Do you know if different versions of these sets were made? Maybe “scaled down” versions?
@TheJr3008 It's possible, I know they do scale down sets sometimes. For example, the Real Ghostbusters complete collection originally had all 5 volumes in Steelbooks in the box, but the recent releases have been regular cases instead. To my knowledge no such thing was done to the Lion sets. There's the tin sets which should be as you see in the video, and the 2-volume set of just the discs in large regular cases. Might be a Chinese bootleg, they're usually quite fancy like that.
I think I have the one you are talking about.I've got the blue, yellow and green lion collections.Does your blue lion collection have a "smooth" surface on the front?Mine does, whereas my yellow and green lion have a "bumpy" surface on the front...and those fold out like in the video here, whereas the blue one does not.I've also noticed the blue lion collection that comes in a standard DVD case does NOT contain any special features.Just trailers for other Anime Works titles.
@TheJr3008 I just purchased the 5 lion sets and they were all good except Volume 1 Blue Lion. I talked to amazon and I am waiting for the replacement to see if it is the same. Since I can't buy these in a store I won't know which one I am getting until it arrives. This is going to be pretty shitty if I can get the embossed fold out version since the other 4 I have are!! If they are going change the packaging at least mark it somehow so buyers know what they are getting!!!!

Yes. Lion Force is the 5 tins (containing all 72 episodes), Vehicle Force is 3 volumes (containing all 52 episodes), then there's the Fleet of Doom movie with both Voltrons which is one disc. Then there's Go Lion, whihc is the original uncut Japanese series that Lion Force was made from. The only series that hasn't been released yet is Dairugger, which is the original Janese series that Vehicle Force was based on. But it's apparently coming out soon...
Because it was originally made in 4x3 aspect ratio for optimum viewing on YouTube's OLD player. The widescreen segments were letterboxed, and the 4x3 clips were pillarboxed within that frame. I'm in the process of remastering the old MMC episodes, including this one. The new version will fill the widescreen frame properly, with the 4x3 clips being pillarboxed within that frame properly.
Acording to Voltron's original story Haga(honerva) was never disguise as a goddess,The Goddess of the Universe saporated Voltron as munisment for using his power to rampaging in the universe
Cool review. Though you didn't show us the black booklet (though you were running low on time so I understand) and you didn't include the web address. I wonder if Peter Cullen himself can guess the connection between Transformers and Voltron.
I know Hunk isn't doing a bad sign on the layout design. But it sort of looks like he's doing a 'up yours' to everyone. Loved the show when I was a kid have all the dvd sets except Black Lion. Gotta get around to getting that set thanks for the review Zaranyzerak.
There were loads of shows in the 80s that were similar to voltron, there was a live action show called dynaman, there wer a few others but i cant remember wat they were called. Then later we got power rangers. they used 2 have soda commercials for voltron or something, but yhea watching your vids just got me back into it. luv the dvds man, thanks Z.
"10 to 12 year old boy in the 80's is not going to look at it and say COOL"
Lets not forget some girls watched it too! I mean they had a princess piloting a massive laser shooting robot lion; that's WAY COOLER than what Barbie as /ever/ done in her entire existence =)
Not really, considering he only piloted the Blue Lion for about 3 episodes, the rest of the time it was the Princess. Besides, he's on the interior packaging.
Actually, I don't "have to" add anything. This video was a review of the DVD release, not a critique or summary of the story. And no, he didn't pilot the Blue Lion for 6 episodes. He was "injured" in episode 6, they didn't even have the lions for all 6 of those episodes as it was mainly the origin story. They don't even get the keys to run the lions until episode 3. So, actually, he pilotted Blue Lion for FOUR episodes. So I was one off.
I didn't mean to add anything to your video, but just to mention it in the comment / answer to title26.
And I give up, you're right about piloting the lion. I should have said "appearance" for 6 episodes. And the appearance has nothing to do with the blue lion, so it has nothing to do with the tin.
Both the original Japanese version and the Robotech version. I used to watch Robotech, and was interested to know more about the origins of the show. So i learned about Macross. The first pure Japanese Macross I saw was the DYRL movie, which I saw in raw Japanese at a local comic/anime store in 1986. In fact, there's a HUGE discussion about Macross (all of them) in the comments section of the last of my Robotech DVD Disambiguation videos.
let me know if anyone agrees with this but i think power rangers ripped off the voltron show espicially in the first seasons just about the same robot and colors for rangers dont get me wrong love the first seasons of power rangers but like to know what u guys think
I loved Voltron back in the day. I still like the plot, but the dialouge is terrible. I wish they'd remake this series like they did He-Man, and mix in elements of the Devil's Due comics. That would be so cool!
Good review, keep up the great vids...Did you know that hollywood is actually thinking of making a live action Votron and Thundercats movie. Since Transformers was a hit, and the upcoming sequel and GI JOE movie, Hollywood is scrambling to adapt popular 80s cartoons.
I heard about that! Supposedly the script is looking good, I hope they do a good job of the movie. I've always felt G.I. Joe needed a live action version. From what little they've shown so far (such as Ray Park as Snake Eyes), I'm definitely looking forward to that one.
I just bought the first series (Blue Lion) of Voltron, which is the only one currently released in the UK. I'm hoping they decide to release the other 4 over here aswell. I would buy the other 4 from the US but the packaging is different in the UK, we get steelbooks whereas the region 1 releases are in the tins so it would look a bit odd lol.
Oh, definitely - because then you're seeing it uncut, as it was originally intended to be seen. I think it's basically if you grew up with Voltron, you tend to prefer Voltron for the nostalgia factor. but if you're new to the whole story, you'll likely prefer GoLion.
Cool,. I knew about the Boomerang showings, didn't know about the CN ones. Not much point watching it on commercial television, though, once you've got the DVDs. :)
I am so thankful you're going through these, because you've caused me to actually go back and watch these again. They're still pretty entertaining even nowadays.
I love the Voltron boxsets, and I am glad that someone else also noticed of the ways they series was released on DVD to Region 1 (as in the order they formed Voltron/GoLion) and of course the painstaking process, as you noted as well, in which Media Blasters re-mastered them all.
I have been enjoying the series as I've re-discovered my childhood over the last two years. I love them all. Can't wait for the live action film. As well as the Vehicale Voltron (Dairugger) and GoLion sets ...
It just blows me away how much work they put into it. Without question one of the best 80's cartoon sets thus far, for the sheer amount of time and effort put into remastering it! It's funny, I remmeber when they only had the first couple of sets out, I read a comment on amazon from someone complaining that they weren't releasing it all at once. I was like, "Do you have ANY concept of how much WORK is going into these sets??? They're taking their time to do them WELL!" Sheesh, some people!
I've been re-discovering my childhood quite a bit that past few years as well via the various DVD sets of old faves that have been coming out. Though, I don't think I've ever really been out of touch with it...hehehe
I'll be reviewing the other Voltron sets as I get them (through I'll probably wait for each set to be complete, as I did with this one), as well as several of the other cartoon sets in my collection.
Well I have also never REALLY "lost touch" if you will, as I seem'd to have never really stop watching Voltron, Transformers generation 1, Dino Riders, ect. I especially love Voltron and Transfomers.
Media Blasters also did great, bang up jobs on the Galaxy high (remember that, eh?) sets I have as well as many others. Can't wait for the other sets, and hope the live action film lives up to my expectations as well ...
Ditto, I've always been firmly in touch with my inner 12 year old...hehehe.
Transformers was HUGE for me when it was originally on (I still have all my old TF toys too). I also loved some short-lived gems like Inhumanoids, Visionaries and Starcom. And have later come to enjoy stuff like Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors and Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers (both of which I missed when they were originally on, I was probably watching Transformers...hehehe)
Galaxy High is another one I missed, though I always wanted to check it out. I remember reading an article about it in Starlog and thought it sounded great. I think that was the same issue that had a big article about Galaxy Rangers as well, which I ALSO wanted to check out but it was never shown in my area!
I'll add Galaxy High to the list of must-get cartoons on DVD. :)
Too cool. I never collected Starlog, however I have MANY YEARS back issues of good ol' Fangoria (put out by them). I also collect the classic '80s and earily '90s issues of Fango off eBay as well as generation 1 figures. I am gomma include Fangoria reviews in my video review blogs later on, as well as my DVD collection (probably broken up into sub-genres).
Ah Galaxy High has held up well for me! I watched several episodes as a young'en around the original TMNT's time. Well worth revisiting!
Ah great memories! I remember watching my first long out of print Transformers boxset, voice actor Mike McConnahie mentioned working on it and someone at a Bot-Con convention bringing him a very rare issue of the comic book to Visionaries. I had at least three of the toys. I loved the theme song as well, right up there with Denver: The Last Dinosaur.
A lot of the short-lived ones were more then decent and desurve DVD relasese as well. Peace bro ...
I always got a chuckle at the color coordination of the team. Lance is dressed in blue, but pilots the Red Lion and Sven is in black and Allura is in pink, yet they pilot the Blue Lion, and Keith is in red, but pilots Black Lion.
arent u afraid those sets will rust? and i saw another booklet in the yellow set what was it? and whats nxt 2 upload? part 2? or another vid and plz plz plz make an indepth of those comic-based tv show dvd sets and animaniacs!.pretty plz with dvds on top! :)
Well, I'm not planning to leave them out in the rain, so no rust worries. Of course Part 2 is next. The other booklet in the Yellow Lion set was just a little catalogue of other titles available from the same DVD company. They often include those so you can see what else they have.
I don't think Voltron made it to the UK. I'm sure someone will let me know otherwise but for me there was only ever one giant robot and that was 'GIGANTOR' Now there was a guy you could look up to!:)
Ah yes, good 'ol Gigantor! You know, Gigantor was not only the first giant robot anime, but actually one of the first ANIME of ANY kind! We owe much to the big grey guy... :)
Seen it, a loooong time ago. I remember it starred Gary Graham, who was fairly well know from Alien Nation at the time. I see the DVD of Robot Jox in bargain bins a lot these days, I should grab it.
Yep, it's been out for a while (I show it in my DVD Collection videos, specifically Part 1 of my Sci-Fi DVDs).
The series is available, and the post-series TV movies just came out in set too! So get those, and the movies, and you've got the entire saga. Check out amazon, they've got listings for all of them.
Oh. The guy on the Red Lion set. I believe his name was Yurak or something like that. He was one of Zarcon's generals, but was destroyed by Voltron in an earlier episode. Actually, I think that may have been right around the time Sven left the show.
Nope, that isn't Yurak. Yurak was only in it at the start (he doesn't even make it past the end of the first set!), prior to Lotor showing up. Yurak gets turned into a Robeast to redeem himself for failing to defeat Voltron so many times in episode 14, the first episode with Lotor. Needless to say, he failed yet again. :) It's actually notable in that it's one of the FEW on-screen deaths that's actually left in the show. Sven left in episode 6.
I have part of the series on DVD. But I still need one or two more volumes (I can't remember how many there were off the top of my head). Interesting note about Voltron though. It turns out that they never aired the dubbed final episode. Now it's been years since I saw the final episodes of Voltron, so all I really remember was a whole massive battle on Planet Doom and something about Lotor and Erick (I think that was his name, Sven's brother). But they never aired the very last episode.
There were five. Alright. That means the only one I'm missing is the Black Lion one. Ironic... But yeah, I do remember reading about one scene which was obviously censored in the US version, where one of the Ro-Beasts grabs a person and bites their head off. And yes, Sven dies in the Japanese version and his brother Eric comes in toward the end of the series. But I guess in the US version they just pretend that it's still Sven (as I said, it's been a long time).
Yep - When Romelle discovers "Sven" as a slave on Planet Doom, it's actually Sven's bro in GoLion. There are soooooo many things they censored - with editing, with dialogue, in short by any means necessary to make it "appropriate" for North American viewers. I actually find it hilrious now, watching Voltron and seeing HOW they chose to censor certain parts. Some of it is soooo obvious :) for Part 3 of my review, I'll be going into this with one of my fave examples.
Ok. It turns out they did air the final episode, but they pretended that both Lotor and 'Sven' (Eric) survived the battle through the magic of censorship.
Ditto Nanny - I didn't actually know she originally died in GoLion. If you pop over to World Events' YouTube page, theres a couple of interesting vids about the censorship that took place in Voltron, comparing it to the original GoLion (which is FINALLY coming out on DVD uncut over here!) =D
It's interesting - there were originally 52 episodes of goLion, which became the first 52 episodes of Lion Force voltron. Then, when it took off they actually got the original animation company who MADE GoLion to create new animation so they could continue the Voltron story! (That's when Queen Merla comes in after Zarkon is defeated) I talk about this a bit in Part 2, which should be up some time today.
One thing I completely forgot to mention - did you notice, the order the sets go in (Blue, Yellow, Green, Red, Black) is the EXACT order in which the Lions form Voltron? They put so much thought into this collection it's almost scary... :D
anyone know if voltron volume 2 onward is out in the uk or is going to be?

The only series that hasn't been released yet is Dairugger, which is the original Janese series that Vehicle Force was based on. But it's apparently coming out soon...

Just out of curiosity, why is this in a square rather then wide screen or letterboxed like a lot of your other videos?
john6380 2 years ago
Because it was originally made in 4x3 aspect ratio for optimum viewing on YouTube's OLD player. The widescreen segments were letterboxed, and the 4x3 clips were pillarboxed within that frame. I'm in the process of remastering the old MMC episodes, including this one. The new version will fill the widescreen frame properly, with the 4x3 clips being pillarboxed within that frame properly.

Great and detail info, the guy you point at 13:29 is Sevens(Kurogane) young brother and his name is Riu
The USA dub of Voltron I download it via torrent, but I own the Japan version of Voltron (King Beast Golion)
If you can make a review of this DVD's
stef300000 2 years ago

Sven should be on the back of the blue lion tin
title26 3 years ago
Not really, considering he only piloted the Blue Lion for about 3 episodes, the rest of the time it was the Princess. Besides, he's on the interior packaging.
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
@ Zaranyzerak:
To be exact he piloted the Blue Lion for 6 episodes.
And you have to add that he only died trying to save Lance and protect the rest.
You87 3 years ago
Actually, I don't "have to" add anything. This video was a review of the DVD release, not a critique or summary of the story. And no, he didn't pilot the Blue Lion for 6 episodes. He was "injured" in episode 6, they didn't even have the lions for all 6 of those episodes as it was mainly the origin story. They don't even get the keys to run the lions until episode 3. So, actually, he pilotted Blue Lion for FOUR episodes. So I was one off.
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
I didn't mean to add anything to your video, but just to mention it in the comment / answer to title26.
And I give up, you're right about piloting the lion. I should have said "appearance" for 6 episodes. And the appearance has nothing to do with the blue lion, so it has nothing to do with the tin.

You might want to look at some of my other videos... I've known about Macross since the 80's.

the japanese version?
title26 3 years ago
Both the original Japanese version and the Robotech version. I used to watch Robotech, and was interested to know more about the origins of the show. So i learned about Macross. The first pure Japanese Macross I saw was the DYRL movie, which I saw in raw Japanese at a local comic/anime store in 1986. In fact, there's a HUGE discussion about Macross (all of them) in the comments section of the last of my Robotech DVD Disambiguation videos.

Since Transformers was a hit, and the upcoming sequel and GI JOE movie, Hollywood is scrambling to adapt popular 80s cartoons.
mariabenz07 3 years ago

Akifis 3 years ago
actally I started watching Golion, which was one of the two principle Anime series that made Voltron. I enjoyed Golion than I did Voltron.
Pegas105 3 years ago
Oh, definitely - because then you're seeing it uncut, as it was originally intended to be seen. I think it's basically if you grew up with Voltron, you tend to prefer Voltron for the nostalgia factor. but if you're new to the whole story, you'll likely prefer GoLion.

SBaby 3 years ago
I love the Voltron boxsets, and I am glad that someone else also noticed of the ways they series was released on DVD to Region 1 (as in the order they formed Voltron/GoLion) and of course the painstaking process, as you noted as well, in which Media Blasters re-mastered them all.
I have been enjoying the series as I've re-discovered my childhood over the last two years. I love them all. Can't wait for the live action film. As well as the Vehicale Voltron (Dairugger) and GoLion sets ...
brandonthyname 3 years ago
It just blows me away how much work they put into it. Without question one of the best 80's cartoon sets thus far, for the sheer amount of time and effort put into remastering it! It's funny, I remmeber when they only had the first couple of sets out, I read a comment on amazon from someone complaining that they weren't releasing it all at once. I was like, "Do you have ANY concept of how much WORK is going into these sets??? They're taking their time to do them WELL!" Sheesh, some people!
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
I've been re-discovering my childhood quite a bit that past few years as well via the various DVD sets of old faves that have been coming out. Though, I don't think I've ever really been out of touch with it...hehehe
I'll be reviewing the other Voltron sets as I get them (through I'll probably wait for each set to be complete, as I did with this one), as well as several of the other cartoon sets in my collection.
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
Yup same here!
Cool, cool, I see. :D
Can't wait for the other sets, and hope the live action film lives up to my expectations as well ...
;)
brandonthyname 3 years ago
Ditto, I've always been firmly in touch with my inner 12 year old...hehehe.
Transformers was HUGE for me when it was originally on (I still have all my old TF toys too). I also loved some short-lived gems like Inhumanoids, Visionaries and Starcom. And have later come to enjoy stuff like Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors and Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers (both of which I missed when they were originally on, I was probably watching Transformers...hehehe)
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
Galaxy High is another one I missed, though I always wanted to check it out. I remember reading an article about it in Starlog and thought it sounded great. I think that was the same issue that had a big article about Galaxy Rangers as well, which I ALSO wanted to check out but it was never shown in my area!
I'll add Galaxy High to the list of must-get cartoons on DVD. :)
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
Well worth revisiting!
brandonthyname 3 years ago

I noticed that too! The only ones that were coordinated were Pidge (Green) and Hunk (Yellow) :)

Well, I'm not planning to leave them out in the rain, so no rust worries. Of course Part 2 is next. The other booklet in the Yellow Lion set was just a little catalogue of other titles available from the same DVD company. They often include those so you can see what else they have.

Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
Oh. The guy on the Red Lion set. I believe his name was Yurak or something like that. He was one of Zarcon's generals, but was destroyed by Voltron in an earlier episode. Actually, I think that may have been right around the time Sven left the show.
SBaby 3 years ago
Nope, that isn't Yurak. Yurak was only in it at the start (he doesn't even make it past the end of the first set!), prior to Lotor showing up. Yurak gets turned into a Robeast to redeem himself for failing to defeat Voltron so many times in episode 14, the first episode with Lotor. Needless to say, he failed yet again. :) It's actually notable in that it's one of the FEW on-screen deaths that's actually left in the show. Sven left in episode 6.
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
I have part of the series on DVD. But I still need one or two more volumes (I can't remember how many there were off the top of my head). Interesting note about Voltron though. It turns out that they never aired the dubbed final episode. Now it's been years since I saw the final episodes of Voltron, so all I really remember was a whole massive battle on Planet Doom and something about Lotor and Erick (I think that was his name, Sven's brother). But they never aired the very last episode.
SBaby 3 years ago
There were five. Alright. That means the only one I'm missing is the Black Lion one. Ironic... But yeah, I do remember reading about one scene which was obviously censored in the US version, where one of the Ro-Beasts grabs a person and bites their head off. And yes, Sven dies in the Japanese version and his brother Eric comes in toward the end of the series. But I guess in the US version they just pretend that it's still Sven (as I said, it's been a long time).
SBaby 3 years ago
And then there was a movie where they teamed up with the Vehicle Force.
SBaby 3 years ago
"Fleet of Doom" It's actually available on DVD now, but only online through World Events' Voltron website and amazon. I really need to get that one.
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
Yep - When Romelle discovers "Sven" as a slave on Planet Doom, it's actually Sven's bro in GoLion. There are soooooo many things they censored - with editing, with dialogue, in short by any means necessary to make it "appropriate" for North American viewers. I actually find it hilrious now, watching Voltron and seeing HOW they chose to censor certain parts. Some of it is soooo obvious :) for Part 3 of my review, I'll be going into this with one of my fave examples.
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
Ok. It turns out they did air the final episode, but they pretended that both Lotor and 'Sven' (Eric) survived the battle through the magic of censorship.
SBaby 3 years ago
Ditto Nanny - I didn't actually know she originally died in GoLion. If you pop over to World Events' YouTube page, theres a couple of interesting vids about the censorship that took place in Voltron, comparing it to the original GoLion (which is FINALLY coming out on DVD uncut over here!) =D
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
It's interesting - there were originally 52 episodes of goLion, which became the first 52 episodes of Lion Force voltron. Then, when it took off they actually got the original animation company who MADE GoLion to create new animation so they could continue the Voltron story! (That's when Queen Merla comes in after Zarkon is defeated) I talk about this a bit in Part 2, which should be up some time today.
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
i need yellow green and black to finish my voltron colection, i have red blue so far i love em great cartoon.
loganrogue24 3 years ago
One thing I completely forgot to mention - did you notice, the order the sets go in (Blue, Yellow, Green, Red, Black) is the EXACT order in which the Lions form Voltron? They put so much thought into this collection it's almost scary... :D
