@katey1dog touché ; ) Definetively the old Trek movies have some romanticism that can't be emulated. I am a very big fan of TNG also, but their movies wasn't so good..not totally bad, but the whole outcome wasn't as cool as the TOS movies !
@trekie01 NEMESIS was poison to the saga. Moreso than FINAL FRONTIER. At least with TFF, the plot itself was enjoyable, yet with Nemesis it was a TOWK rip-off.
I don't know which is to blame: JJ Abrams or Paramount. All Paramount wanted to do was revitalize the saga after Nemesis by reintroducing us to the original characters. And unfortunately, they found JJ Abrams. He turned Star Trek, finally, into what the money men wanted: Star Wars.
@katey1dog Paramount always dicked around with the franchise since they bought it off from Desilou Studios. They cashed in on the success on Star Wars with TMP, and allowed Rick Berman, who had only produced children's programming before TNG, to do what he wanted. And now Abrams and his ilk control it.
The only problem with TMP was how quick it made it to the theater. Now that the digitalized remake came out, we can truly enjoy TMP the way we should have.
@katey1dog And not to knock TMP, which I happen to like; but if they had done it right they would've had better production value for the sequels. As you mentioned TFF, it was bad timing with the Writer's Guild Strike and the release of TNG that hindered its chances of being a great movie.
I loved TMP. Even without the special effects, it still made more sense than ANY of the Star Wars films. In fact, it may have provided evidence for the origin of the Borg.
True, the production values were low, but Paramount needed something to fill the gap made by the giant leap that 20th Fox took with Star Wars. And the whole TFF film... That was Shatner's baby. Still better than the monstrosities Lucas shilled out in with Phantom Menace onward.
@katey1dog Origin of the Borg? I find it cute, that while those Next Gen chumps dealt with the grunts on continuous basis, Kirk met, fought and killed the Borg's creator/god. Proof that Jim is the man.
STIII score together with STV are the best ones in all the Star Trek saga (including TNG and the new Trek)

Poor David, he really didn't stand a chance. Being the son of Kirk are big shoes to fill.
