I was at this show... can anybody remember cedric doing a crazy backflip out of nowhere... or was i just really high? When they played francis the mute... fuuuuck, perfecto timing! cheers for the memories bro.
have everybody forgotten that there is over 60 years worth of popular 'blues' driven guitar work before omar. of course older stuff will pop up now and then because so much has been done before. its easier to re-invent or create something new for 50's and 60's guitar players because it was new and there was so much to explore then. same thing goes for page in zep. I'm not saying that everything has been done on guitar at all, but you get what i mean
wow okay, well i dont know the tuning, but lets stick with standard Eadgbe.
the first would be B - A
and the second would be G - E
If your a guitarist, u kinda need to learn the notes, otherwise, lets be honest, you havent learnt the instrument at all, dont think, oh i can play green day because i got the tabs means your a guitarist at all.
Go put on Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt, or if you have Megaton Shotblast, Cordova. Page might have written a lot of great songs that a lot of people liked, but when it comes to true genius and talent... sorry, Page just does not have a diverse enough resume. Omar has done it all. Punk rock, dub, hip-hop, prog rock... Omar has done it all. And Page?... Blues... Rock n Roll...
Page: Blues, Folk, Rock n Roll, Proto-Metal, Renaissance (Stairway to Heaven), Celtic, Indian, Prog (live version of Dazed and Confused, Achilles Last Stand) All of that years before these guys, how is that not diverse enough. and punk rock and hip hop is the easiest thing in the world, and dub is pretty easy as well.
Folk.. Renaissance.. Celtic... Indian... Give me a break man. His experience with half of what you listed is... dabbling, at best. Besides, if you want to stack lists, I did not even begin to scratch the surface of Omar's pro salsa and swing experience. In fact I would say the opposite, I would say what makes Omar great and not Page is his attention to not only rhythm, but because he looks at songs as a whole piece of art instead of different parts. That's what makes him better.
From a compositional standpoint Page is more advanced with counterpoint, and was WAY more advanced with melody. Omar may have more technical structure within his music, but as the 80's proved, that means nothing compared to melody, harmony, timbre and rythm. As a player Page had more dynamic levels whereas Omar tends to always play at the same dynamic level (at least live). Page isn't my favorite guitarist, but the impact the man has had has not been surpassed by Omar.
Also, on a compositional note, I think you are way wrong. I'm not sure how familiar you are with The Mars Volta's creative process, but Omar writes the songs and then sends them to Cedric for lyrics. So spare the lyrics, what you hear when you listen to The Mars Volta is all Omar. IMO, Page could not touch that if he had another 20 years to his career.
Page was the primary writer of the music and Plant of the lyrics. Same thing. Personally, I find TMV's dynamic power doesn't match up to Zeppelin. After awhile TMV just sounds like a flat plane with a couple of drops. I never sense a build up, except for a few songs.
I've read from interviews with Omar that he often tapes jams and splices them together and what not in addition to writing, sort of like Miles Davis did with Bitches Brew.
What Omar has said is that whenever he finishes an album, he gets really depressed because he enjoys the writing/creative process, so he just constantly writes music, and has a closet full of demo's and jams that he and Cedric sometimes rifle through for TMV songs. I understand where you're coming from with the dynamic thing, but the whole reason I got into TMV to begin with is because after being a fan of LZ all through HS, I grew hungry for something.. more... TMV were the ones who delivered.
Yeah, I think the article was in guitar player. I'm with you on that. Same reason I'm into them. I do think they reopened a once locked door and have started the beginning of making it cool to go all out rather than be satisfied with mediocrity. I'm happy both as listener and a musician that they exist.
Undoubtedly. TMV was weird to me at first, but becoming a fan actually challenged me to listen to more music that I thought I might not like. Thanks to that push, I have discographies of bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Mastodon, two bands that I never even thought I would hear mentioned in the same sentence.
Don't get me wrong, I think these guys are the best popular band out right now. But they haven't really done anything that hasn't been done before so much as they are doing something that no one else is doing right now and doing it well. Page did things that hadn't really been done before, which in my opinion marks him a higher genius than Omar. Not that it matters... but this is the comment section so wtf.
The Widow is a kinda generic Zeppelin esque blues jam yes. But take something like l'via or Cassandra Gemini. Can you tell me another band who has made songs with punk, prog, salsa, jazz, blues, elements in one? But whatever comparing someones career from like 40 years ago to someone today is pointless. They are both genius minds in their own right.
LOVE this song.. love omars solos in this one, classical rock-type, litsening to it over and over.. got a cover of this song you should watch and let me know what u think:)!!!
pridgen is amazing, theodore is also amazing. I think pridgen has more natural talent, though, while theodore has more technique and more consistent patterns.
wanna know whats gay? EVERY FUKCING VOLTA VID IS FULL OF COMMENTS THAT ARE ALL "thomas sux", "no ur gay pridgen sux". come on dudes fucking a. theyre both sick in their own fucking right.
Jon is clearly better anyone who says other wise is retarded because ive been playing drums since ive been born. TP is all kick and snare, and he fumbles quite a bit. Theodore is just god
if your such an expert, did you know that at age 10 thomas won a giant drum off held by guitar center (do you know what GC is..?) and at 15 he was excepted to berklee school of music?
Yes i know, Do you know how many ppl get accepted to music schools at a young age, TONS of them. I'm not saying Thomas sucks, he's a GREAT Drummer, and Fucking Awesome and that is impressive(DONT GET ME WRONG). TP does make many mistakes though and loses the beat alot. But thats normal i must admit, from playing live and nervous and just going to crazy. Now Theodore is just as good as TP but just has a different Style. He is also more Solid and has more consistant Drum lines.

Actually I was so wrong now that I have listened the whole album and some live bootlegs. He just keeps on playing all the time in a same way, no matter how the rest of the band plays the part of the song. Too much is too much, and Jon knew how to keep it simple enough.

Fuck this band. All they ever did was get rid of their star players like Eva and Jon. Fuck you Cedric you sound like a bitch anyway. And FYI Omar, ANYWAY can fucking experiment with pedals douche bag.
star player? EVA? dude juan alderete is 20 times better, and dont even try to fight me on that one, same with the Jon vs. Pridgen thing, pridgen owns, dont even try that shit with me
J. Theo is a good man, no matter how lazy he was. Thats why he was booted out, not because of money is because he was lazy and only wanted to do things on his time, not theirs.

Omar is up there with Page and Townshend and the like as a supremely skilled guitarist.
