Yosef, I want to meet you after my conversion. I have a few questions that I am going to send to you. I have been studying your whole case on the Oral Torah and Bowing/Prostrating in Tefilah...
I think the question should be the other way around Asking muslims.cuz Jews & Christians prostrated during prayer before islam even existed. It is a historical fact that muhammad based many islamic practices off of Jewish and Christian practices including prostration & direction of prayer to Jerusalem which was later changed. Even the bible says Jesus prostrated -"he fell with his face to the ground and prayed" Matthew 26:39. So lets ask muslims about prostration rather than a Jew or Christian.
Budhist also prostrate. Did they copy Christians and Jews? A muslim will say to you that god has brought a messenger to every religion. Muslims do not believe that they have a new religion, they have the religion that was sent to both Moses and Jesus both of whose religions were corrupted according to Muslims. "It is a historical fact that muhammad based many islamic practices off of Jewish and Christian " Is it? or is it a "fact" you would like to believe. Only Muslims prostate in a direction.
I wish that a person like you who reads and knows much would one day find the truth. The way of the prophets. The way God wanted us to live like.
I challenge you to prostrate once in a lifetime...leave away all what you "know" and just imagine God is in front of your eyes. He Who loves us so much..
You've mentioned here that you're not greater than those before you.
My question is, what is your opinion of their prayers if they don't do prostration? Do you consider their prayers a incomplete? invalid? unacceptable? or is it just optional?
Because in Islam, when it comes to solat, it's either sah (valid) or batal (invalid), rarely the grey area unless it's sunat (optional).
I will not give you my opinion. The Jewish law is that the individual bow and prostrate. If he does not prostrate, the prayer is still valid -- meaning: he does not need to repeat the prayer; HOWEVER the prayer was not expressed properly - this means that prostrating is not just optional. Intentionally not bowing is a transgression.
Your use of the words sah (I presume 9a7 based on a similar Hebrew word) and batal (I presume ba6al based on the Hebrew word ba6el) parallel Jewish terminology.
From the title there I thought for real you were going to sujud/sigd in the street. LOL
Yeah, prostration existed since the worshiping idols. They are still doing it in the Baha'i Faith, Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism and, surprisingly, some sects of Christianity.
In Islam, "not to follow as others" would apply to culture mostly. When it comes to ritual, whatever as been mentioned in the Quran, even as same as others' way, should be followed without change. WALlahu'alam
interesting ....quran lord allah has face and hands ...sounds like human, he is not Creator because Creator knows all and does His Will without needing a face, eyes, or hands. Of course, many Muslims know that this is only a figure of speech. Far be it that the Absolute ONE possess plurality of nature or co-sharers of eternality.
Just as the Quran contains metaphors and figures of speech, likewise the Torah contains figures of speech. The wicked will always justify his heresy.
First of all,the Quran mentiones in surah Al-Ikhlaas,that you can't compare Him to nothing,so when the Quran speaks of hands and face and such things, you shouldnt think of human hands and face, subhan'Allah we do not know Him nor can we see Him,so you can't compare Him to His creatures.
oh brother, muslims don't blow themselves up. come on brother, i thought you were a very educated and cultivated chap. i have utmost respect for you, but that statement was not called for. you know the situation in israel and the treatment of arabs. muslims don't blow themselves up. thats a gross generalisation. you being jewish doesn't necessite being irrational.
I know that not all Muslims support suicide bombing, however there are enough Muslims who do support suicide bombing to prevent Muslims who are against it from speaking out and protesting -- likely out of fear of how those who are pro-suicide bombing would react. I think this is understandable.
Perhaps those who support suicide bombing are not Muslims... but they identify themselves as Muslims and I'm under the impression that most people who call themselves Muslim also regard them as Muslims.
cont'd Secondly : the issue to non muslims should not be "suicide bombing". It should be BOMBING civilians during war, which Islam is clearly against ( and this includes children, old people, and noncombating women and men).
For a muslim, to commit SUICIDE is totally forbidden, and in the Qura'an it is mentioned that it will lead the person into Hell.
The question arises is when puting the words SUICIDE AND BOMBING together,
It goes without question that intentional killing of civilians is unacceptable and a horrible crime. It is reality that during wars sometimes civilians are killed accidentally, which is a terrible tragedy. If there is an extremely high rate of civilian death, then something is clearly suspicious.
Subtile sentence you pushed through about muslims blowing themselves up. Those are ignorant people who see no other way and are mostly pushed by seriously sick people.
Alhamdou lillah that the muslims from the ahlu ssounnah still uphold the same commandments and customs as the first generation of muslims did.
We as muslims are also no allowed to copy the cutoms of the non believers, but that doesn't mean we can give up clear commandments as most of the jews did with prostration.
I agree with you that they are ignorant people who see no other way. I also do not think that all Muslims support such actions... however, few muslims speak out against such things. I can understand that this may be largely due to fear -- but that itself indicates a serious problem... and indicates that support for such actions is widespread, even if it is not everyone. Jews are not afraid to speak out against actions of the Israeli army when they disagree.
The problem is that i cannot speak out after every suicide bomb. If people ask I, for example, explain why it is 7aram (forbidden) to commit suicide and even take the lives of civilians during the action.
I don't know about your country, but here in Holland the Jewish community doesn't speak out against the crimes of Israel, there is only one group who does, but they are not religious. The Orthodox Jews only sometimes appear on a talkshow in the form of their Rabbi and he fully agreas with all actions taken against Palestinians, including the late massacare in Gaza. Also that raises a question, because i thought that most Hasidic sects are very much opposed to zionism and it's actions.
Muslims aren't idolaters ..and they borrowed their prostration from the Jewish people ..So now whenever another group decided to adopt Jewish customes , we need to change our , inorder not to imitate them ?
There are Christian Sabbath keepers , and Christians and Muslims who circumcise their male infants , are we now to stop doing that ? We shouldn't grow beards or wear head coverings , because the Muslims do that too . Nonsense ..The Muslims aren't idolaters like the Christians...
Muslims are idolators -just not the same as Christians. Christian who prayer to Jesus a man or bow and pray before statues(idols) are idolatrous. Those Christians who pray to G-d but believe in some form of trinity are idolatrous to a certain degree.
Muslims pray to a different god altogether. Though the muslims borrowed and changed much from Judaism and X-nity.
I wonder is the allah idol is the only idol left in the kabaá?
Muslims believe in THE ONE and ONLY God. The word Allaah comes from ILAH, which means God, and means THE ONE GOD. They believe He is the Creator of All and that He knows and sees all. Muslims direct their prayers to the kaaba, which is considered to be the 'house' of Allaah as symbolism, but is not considered as an 'actual' house. And to answer your question, there are no idols in the kaaba, nor is there an idol called 'Allaah' either. The pagans' idols were removed over 1000 years ago.
Also, there are alot of similarties between Islam and Judaism and Christianity because Islam teaches that God (or Allaah) sent the same message, of worshipping the One and Only God, to all nations, through prophets, peace be upon them all.
Muslims believe that Allaah revealed the Torah and that the people later altered it and so Allaah revealed the Bible, in which again, it was altered and so Allaah revealed the Quran and declared He would potect it from being altered and that there would be no further revelations or new prophets. They are all similar because they all carried the same message of worshipping just One God.
Muslims believe that the original books (of the Torah for example) of Allaah declared there would still be yet another prophet and it described him so that they people would know him (i.e. Muhammed, peace be upon him).
from this video and some of your comments I understood that:
*Jews (some of them at least) consider Muslims as idolatrous.
*anything that Muslims do even if its Halacha Jews seaze to practice it.
*You seem to think that a Muslim BLOWING him self up is agreat thing he can do to please God! did you find this in the Qur'an or Sunnah?
-Islam is the most distant religion from Idolatry-even raising the graves of people more than an inch of the ground isn't allowed so people don't venerate it. >>>
-According to the second point, if people follow these halakhas, many Jews will end up following their rabbis blindly and even if things are lawful to them they will make them prohibited and vice versa.
-The fact that SOME Muslims condone suicide bombing is not something that can make someone with a sincere search for knowledge say about a Whole group of people.Don't forget that before the Jews took Palestine the Haganna perpetrated terrorist attacks but no body blaims Judaism for that!! thanks
You do not need to convince me that not all Muslims are in support of killing civilians. I'm well aware that there are Muslims against such actions. And I did not say that the Qur'an or even the Sunna teaches this. It is, however, widely enough believed that this is acceptable and praiseworthy that those Muslims who are against it virtually never publically protest such actions.
When Jews suspect Jews kill civilians, they protest. The aid ship that was turned away was by a Jewish group.
lightbulb: when masiahh is here, then ha-yom kippur would be pointless...so then what (regarding prostration)...sorry, a little spark got me thinking at 3 minutes into the video..
The MAIN purpose of Moshiahh is to restore the world to proper monotheism and to upholding the laws of the Almighty. He will inspire and lead the people of Israel BACK to upholding the Torah which Israel as a nation had abandoned for so long... only this time, the restoration of Torah observance among the people of Israel will be lasting. Oh, if our Arab cousins do something to Nefilat Alpaim, should that make us stop doing it? Hmm, the Shomronim and the Nostrim have the Torah...should we stop obeying Torah? Lo! HaShem arsoor! They just don't want to do it. That's all....
You should do more Q&A's like this! I like this one in particular!
I would wish to hear a response to the question at the end. But for now, this custom of bowing seems to have continued till Rav Yehudai Gaon (8th cen., Halakhoth Jadolot, Berakhot 5), but there is a prohibition to (1) perform this on stone [Avoda Zara], and (2) perform this outside the Temple.
(
I heard the Ashkenazi brother speak correct Hebrew!! You're a good influence, Yousef!)
Why forget about point 1? It's correct that it's forbidden to prostrate on stone... (permitted in Miqdash) However, the Torah-prohibition only applies to actually pressing your face into the stone while arms and legs are stretched outward. Ha"zal forbad doing so even when arms and legs aren't stretched out. However, one is permitted to prostrate directly on stone so long as he tilts enough that his face doesn't press into the stone.
References given in "Jewish Prostration in Talmudic Law."
Shalaom omedyshar..just a small comment on this subject - doesn't the word worship in Ibri means to bow down or prostate oneself? see below:
שׁחה
shâchâh
shaw-khaw'
A primitive root; to depress, that is, prostrate (especially reflexively in homage to royalty or God): - bow (self) down, crouch, fall down (flat), humbly beseech, do (make) obeisance, do reverence, make to stoop, worship.
There is no word "worship" in Hebrew, as there is in English. Translating any word for bowing as "worship" is more of an interpretation than a translation. The term used in a way most similar to the way 'worship' is used in English, is "oved et..." (work/serve devoted to...)
sha7a / shaHa just means bow... not a particular type of bow.
Todah Omedyashar. However,I must disagree with you. The word "worship" is an abstract word & of a meaning of western influence. There is no Biblical Hebrew equivalent to this word as Biblical Hebrew is concrete. The word Shahhah means to prostrate oneself before another (to get down on the knees and place the face to the ground). The form written as tishtahhaveh is the hitpa'el (reflexive-the action is performed by the subject of the verb)form of the verb meaning "you will prostrate yourself."
This is the same word when Mosheh bowed down to his father-inlaw, Yithro(shemot 18:7)Modern hebrew has become very westernize in its meanings. Paleo-Ibri is concrete-action oriented in its meanings. It involves all of the five senses. That's why it is the most unique of all languages...the language of AhaYah, the Most High!
I did not say the word means "worship." I was very clear that the word "worship" does not exist in Hebrew. You're debating with yourself, and you presume to know Hebrew, without knowing it.
Correction, I'm not presuming anything. You don't know what I may know! I do know that the word "worship" is not an Ibri word. I was merely giving the meaning of the Ibri word Shahhah which means to prostrate oneself before another, etc. Tell me, is this right or wrong? since you are the Ibri expert.
Yosef, I want to meet you after my conversion. I have a few questions that I am going to send to you. I have been studying your whole case on the Oral Torah and Bowing/Prostrating in Tefilah...

What it's derayte to prostrate during amidah?
zachskrit 2 years ago
derayte... d-oraitha ([obligatory] from the Torah)? If this is what you are asking.... where did you hear this in the video?
It is a rabbinic decree that we prostrate at the END of the Amida during what is called Tahhanun / nafilath apaiyim.
It IS d-oraitha (from the Torah) to prostrate when bringing biqurim to the Temple.
It IS a rabbinic decree to korea (bow down) while "al birkaiyim" during the 5 bows WITHIN the Amida.

You know what, forget about my 2 points. I didn't take Mishneh Torah, A"Z 6:12 into account.
KnockAr0und 3 years ago
Why forget about point 1? It's correct that it's forbidden to prostrate on stone... (permitted in Miqdash) However, the Torah-prohibition only applies to actually pressing your face into the stone while arms and legs are stretched outward. Ha"zal forbad doing so even when arms and legs aren't stretched out. However, one is permitted to prostrate directly on stone so long as he tilts enough that his face doesn't press into the stone.
References given in "Jewish Prostration in Talmudic Law."

How does A"Z 6:12 affect your 2 points?

" ומפני זה נהגו כל ישראל להציע מחצלות בבתי כנסייות הרצופות באבנים...להבדיל בין פניהם, ובין האבנים"
Only then did it become clear to me that we used to actually bow outside the Temple as well.
(Check the Jews for Allah post on my blog and contribute to the discussion there)

The term used in a way most similar to the way 'worship' is used in English, is "oved et..." (work/serve devoted to...)
sha7a / shaHa just means bow... not a particular type of bow.
hishta7awaya means means to bow flat.

You're debating with yourself, and you presume to know Hebrew, without knowing it.
omedyashar 3 years ago
Correction, I'm not presuming anything. You don't know what I may know! I do know that the word "worship" is not an Ibri word. I was merely giving the meaning of the Ibri word Shahhah which means to prostrate oneself before another, etc. Tell me, is this right or wrong? since you are the Ibri expert.
