I really like container homes. The only thing is that they don't fit in (aesthetically) in traditional neighborhoods. If building a container home, I see it as being built on a large piece of land rather than in the burbs between homes.
@dards4444 Their economical in many ways from a cool design to natural lighting. She probably used recycled materials for interior, natural lighting which would cut down on electricity usage as well as solar panels can be installed on the rooftops. If she wanted to move to a bigger property, she can buy, disconnect the utilities there & move the containers to her new property. U also have to look at she can expand by buying more containers.
@dards4444 U also have to look at how much it costed her per square foot it would cost. Like building 2000 square ft. probably would have cost her alot more money to build from wood rather than using shipping containers. Also to cut the steel for windows & door ways to allow natural lighting also cuts down on electricity during the daytime. These containers probably cost a couple of thousand each to buy, but if u can afford it u can make expansions alot cheaper than wood.
I have to wonder though, if living inside a shipping container wouldn't be equivalent to a sauna. I can't imagine a steel container even with windows, would be cool in the summertime.
@TheKrystahlPhoenix That's why most use refrigerated units which are insulated and can be modified with central air for the climates that need them. There are moisture a/c units in the desert that could be used to get away from conventional a/c, but living in a fair climate would be preferable, as well.
@TheKrystahlPhoenix BTW, I lived in Texas in a timber/brick home and it's an oven in the summer without a/c, too. I've lived along the West Coast with only ceiling fans near the ocean during the summer, so it's possible provided you can find the right area. In places like El Paso, TX, they use moisture units in apartment complexes. So it all depends on what you are willing to use and where you decide to live.
It's funny that the description says, "...designer believes that her kind of 'future think' may have answers that the rest of the world can use...". "May have answers"? Lady, the world has been using shipping containers to make homes for 30 or 40 years - you're "cutting edge thinking" is cutting the edge of 1970. Cutting edge FAIL.
Why do so many of the designs for these container homes have long skinny rooms? Weld 2 containers together and open up the inside walls to make bigger living spaces!
Good Design! There are many ways to build a home out of a shipping container. We have one on our channel. Ours is made in Canada. Any Canadians watching this video?
I like the layout and design of the interior, however I grow weary of designers and architects who decide to build a structure from shipping containers and fail to make exterior structure look similar to other structures in the same area. Just because it's made of shipping containers, doesn't need to "look" like it was made from them at first glance. This affects the perception of neighbors and resale value of it and other structures nearby.
I'm building a house half straw bale n the other 6 large containers I'm a builder so I no the cheap stuff it's all bout the recycled materials....its gonna come down 200.000 I've also got 100.000 just in case I go OVA....can't wait..!if it was all wood it would be in it's 4000.000s..!
@SuperAaaaa123456 about 1500-2000 US dollars per NEW container. for a 9 1/2 X40X8 foot container I am thinking about building one myself in a few more years. The best way to go is link minimum 6-10 cointainers and have a real nice home and the cost looks is about half of typical home contruction.
@TheCashistrash = $16,000 to $20,000. Then the material and labour of making the containers into living space will be additional costs. How much do you imagine it will cost for the additional expenses on top of the raw containers?
@SuperAaaaa123456 Check on Craigslist. Used ones are generally between $1000-$3000 but there are so many variables (size, quality, insulated or not, delivery) that there's not really a fair, world wide going rate.
You what ever the comments here, all I can say is that your house is awesome and those who criticize it, just wish that they thought this for them selves, hope you will keep up the good work and making more houses for other people And make another video, to show that you have a great idea and an inspiration to those who want to have a beautiful house like yours that can stand the test of time, I'll be waiting for the other videos, God speed
@hugobossdb I plan to build such a home. I know how to fabricate steel framing, basically all the work needed, and in the end, I'll have a house that's stronger than a stick built, for way less money. I'm not a "poodle," who needs Mr. Goodwrench to do everything. I think modular, and containers are modules. You don't seem to have thought it out.
@jag7720 Wood is one of those cheaper materials. Especially duglass fur. laminated woods are also cheaper. Hence why most homes in north america use it. But there can be cheaper methods to build houses constructed out of steel, Something similar to that in an assembly plant like what is seen with modulars. The houses can be mass produced, An certain components coupled with eachother(like legos so sizes and configurations can quickly be customized. It is similar to containers But is more spacious
@hugobossdb It's true, but at least they didn't make the same scale house with raw material. I agree though, I think the recycled and low embodied energy factors are what make them so useful.
The modular shape is what makes them cool too though, they remind me of legos in a way.
@hugobossdb Exactly! she'll build whatever one wants, as long as money is no object and one just has to live in a metal container! And, oh no, I'd never know I was in a container... (her words, ;P)
Then conservation and housing the poor still goes wanting, as before...
They might as well grind them up, put the pieces in other containers and send them back to China to make more containers, so the corporations can ship us more plastic crap!
Personally I believe they look fabulous covered in stucco and painted a bright cheery blue with egg yolk yellow wood window shutters. Be creative people. The possibilities are endless.
This is a grave misunderstanding. Building with shipping containers is an idea that is yet to catch on nationally in the U.S, consequently architects and designers that are pushing this idea try to build showcase homes that show the outer structure of these shipping containers. However the shipping container need be nothing more than the shell of the home. It can be covered with any other outer surface that the owner would so desire. Anything from wood shingles to brick is possible.
Shipping Containers make great structural building blocks for the shell of any home. They are built to withstand the riggers of high seas transportation with as much as eight stacked high. Now translate that to a land based system and you have a shelter that is earthquake and all weather ready. I think most people make the mistake to assume that they have no other option when building with shipping containers than to have them look like what they are.
Well from a pure price standpoint of just the actually house materials (the containers) 5 of them purchased through ebay. (using an average of 4000 for each) would come out to 20,000$ for the containers. (each being 20 ft) So that all equals about 100 sq ft of space. Id say total price for everything else, windows, manual labor, cutting and etc. would probably be another couple thousand so i say the whole project could be done for 25,000$ unfurnished.
To spend the energy, resources and money to have the containers heightened and shipped back to Brookside, to me, goes against the concept of building with shipping containers in the first place. Fail.
@TheGreenfrog140 not sure it did not say so im not sure if those costs i gave are including land prices or not. i assume not though. anyway, the cost of land would be the same either way you chose to build.
