@h6e6ne6 Yeah, I hear ya. I'm just getting off an unmitigated-violence-toward-skunks way of thinking myself. I still would not wild skunks infesting my property, but I could see where deliberately having one as a pet might not be bad.
I love when people take a wild animal and say it needs an expencive diet! where in the wild is a skunk getting stuff like flax seed oil? give your skunk eggs, meal worms, earthworms, berries, small amounts of meat, and fruits and vegtables, nuts, and cereal for treats when you want them to do something. AND exercise! all animals need to run and play to be happy!
@seikaru1722 They don't need it, you are right. But, if you incorporate all of these things in the skunk's diet, he/she will live 10 years or longer. That was the point of the video, to have the healthiest pet skunk as you can have.
@fizzybrasil ummm.....you'd say that about having a pet deer and pet fox right? Because Skunks can be kept as pets. There's no law banning them. The only thing they need is their scent pouch thing removed. Then you are good. Plus they aren't bad animals. They are highly intelligent despite how some are territorial. But in this case, having a pet skunk for a pet isn't a bad idea. Now having a pet Raccoon is a BAD IDEA. (not that I've had one for a pet. I just know by how they act.)
@fizzybrasil You do realize that humans have had animals as pets for thousands of years. And they do that because those animals can be used for protection and to help hunt. I get what you are trying to say though
Don't be idiotic. The human and animal bond started 20,000 years ago with wolves. And guess what? THAT'S WHERE DOGS COME FROM. OH wow. And plus, THESE AREN'T WILD SKUNKS. These are skunks that come from BREEDERS. If you released them into the wild, being already imprinted on humans, they would die. They would not be able to eat properly, they would not defend themselves properly, they would not have a scent gland to protect themselves, etc. Humans have bonded with animals naturally. They come to
(part 2) us often naturally as well. We are just as much entertainment for them as they are for us. Wolves naturally allied with human groups even before domestication started. They would follow the groups, and even sleep in camps of their own accord. Why? People carry a benefit. Animals in the wild generally are NOT happy. They focus on sheer survival. Eat, sleep, protect, breed. No time for anything else. Animals in captivity both live longer, and don't worry about these things at all. They
(part 3) instead have time to play and learn and become more intelligent. Many animals are perfect as companion animals and enjoy bonding to humans, such as skunks. They follow the person around, love to be petted and cuddled, just like cats and dogs. I don't agree on many pets- big cats, coyotes, monkeys, etc. Why? Because they have proven they are unpredictable entirely. They have been proven in MANY cases as bad pets, and in some cases are solitary animals who will not fully bond with
(part 4) ANYTHING. They live life naturally on their own, and really only use people for what they can give them. Skunks, however, are typically naturally drawn to humans and human habitats. They have bonded in many cases over the years. If you honestly go "oh, why don't you get a cat/dog?" A skunk's personality is totally different, as well as their look, needs, etc.. And that's hypocritical. Dogs/cats would not exist if we didn't do what we are now doing w/skunks. Just sayin yo.
I always heard that it was better to use ferret food for skunks (but not solely) instead of dog food, since ferrets have the same need for taurine that skunks do. It eliminates needing to use a supplement.
Please take note: Wildlife animals are not pets. If you should ever find a baby, do not feel like a hero... call your local Department of Natural Resources to find a rehabilitation facility in your area. These animals are not made to live in a house. Keeping a wild animal is wrong. Thank You.
@ghostygirlmn Why does this make me think of the homeless in my area? They were also not made to live in a house. I guess nobody is unless you actually offer them a home.
Dried dog food can damage skunks teeth! Mine is on fresh fruit and vegetables, calcium supplements, bugs such as locusts and giant meal worms and the occasional bit of chicken, boiled egg and whole grains.
Ok a little correction here: Alot of Domestic Breed Skunks are becoming Lactose Intolerant so be carefull with Dairy products. Recomended that you use Soy Milk in Moderation because it can make your skunk fat, or use Calcium Powder.
Thanks for that site drop. im doing some research on pets for when I go off to college. I dont really wanna be alone so I figure get a pet and a i dknt know wh but i really want a skunk.
I'm pretty sure the gland that sprays that liquid can be removed through surgery

@fizzybrasil and research says that they last longer as pets than they do in the wild. True fact.

don't they spray out of fear?
so why would they spray someone they trust?
cubanscarface 2 years ago 3
I can assume that if they didn't have the scent gland removed, they could be scared by things other than their owner(s).
Such as,
unfamiliar house guests.
Other pets
Loud noises.
I'd don't have a skunk though, I'm just making an assumption based on things that can make other animals excited/scared.

Great job explaining what a skunk needs to eat! A lot of people don't research enough and don't know what to feed them.
An added note: Extra virgin olive oil on their food may get them to eat something they need but don't want, and it aids in skin and fur health.
