It's way better being involved in a group like that, that grows to 200 in just 5 short days! Imagine if the teacher would have kept going on and on, I wonder what would have happened? they could have gotten strong enough to take over the country. millions of people would fall for it! I would!!
if the new version brings the matter up again, moderns it a bit for the todays youth audience, it can't be bad.
I also like the 1981 version better than the new german (ok i'm german - but that doesn't matter ;) )
but you have to admit, that we all together always like the stuff better that's made in our time.. there are lots of movies from the 50s 60s that are remade again and were then released in the 80s :) that we liked better back then ^^

The new German version is important. If kids watch this original version here, they see a world they don't know. No cellphones, no internet, funny fashion, language of their parents It's SOMEONE ELSE. You have to remake this story every 20 years to keep it in the NOW. And if it explains some of the rising violence along the way - so be it.
@paulrandig yes but by updating it you take away from it. Back when this took place there were no cell phones or no internet and they dressed alot funnier than that. This is based on a true event so the more you change it the less true what you're potrying will be. How will it help kids if the don't know the true story?
@EOEC2222 Of course you are right. But if you want to show something from "way back" to the kids, show them the original Hitler. If you want to show them HOW THIS CAN HAPPEN ANYTIME - and this was exactly the purpose of the experiment - show them something from today. If you want to teach them about the original school experiment, why show the old movie? It's still a movie and therefor not "true". Show them a docu or let them talk to the real people..
@XXiknarfXXPoop: ahmm... noooo.... i was meaning to say that the new version of the movie is unnecessarily violent. How is this related to Germans being or not being violent? Only a handful of people where involved in the movie, how could they represent all Germans? Germans aren't all the same you know?
@Supenmanu I don't think that the violence in the German movie is related to Germans. I think it's just because the movie is newer. Today's audience demands more "action".
It is odd how the Americans try to style their way of life as being opposite to totalitarianism; but the German philosopher Oswald Spengler can explain this far better than I ever could:
"All we know is that so far there is neither a real nation nor a real State. Can both of these develop out of the knocks of fate, or is this possibility excluded by the very fact of the Colonial type, whose spiritual past belongs elsewhere and is now dead? The American does not talk of State or Mother Country..
... like the Englishman, but of "this country". Actually what it amounts to is a boundless field and a population of trappers, drifting from town to town in the dollar-hunt, unscrupulous and dissolute; for the law is only for those who are not cunning or powerful enough to ignore it.
The resemblance to Bolshevik Russia is far greater than one imagines. There is the same breadth of landscape, which firstly, by excluding any possibility of successful attack by an invader, consequently excludes...
... the experience of real national danger, and, secondly, by making the State not indispensable, prevents the development of any true political outlook. Life is organized exclusively from the economic side and consequently lacks depth, all the more because it contains nothing of that element of historic tragedy, of great destiny, that has widened and chastened the soul of Western peoples through the centuries. Their religion, originally a strict from of Puritanism, has become a sort of ...
... obligatory entertainment, and the War was a novel sport. And there is the same dictatorship there as in Russia (it does not matter that it is imposed by society instead of a party), affecting everything flirtation and church-going, shoes and lipstick, dances and novels a` la mode, thought, food, and recreation that in the Western world is left to the option of individuals. There is one standardized type of American, and, above all, American woman, in body, clothes, and mind; any ...
... departure from or open criticism of the type arouses public condemnation in New York as in Moscow. Finally, there is an almost Russian form of State socialism or State capitalism, represented by the mass of trusts, which, like the Russian economic administrations, systematically standardize and control every detail of production and marketing. These are the real lords of the land in both cases. It is the Faustian will-to-power, but translated from organic growth to soulless mechanization...
@DeBalaguer, this is an American version of it. The ending is more historically general, but still valid. The German version's end is more modern & powerful characters's wise. is more personnal and tragic in one case.
i gotta say this movie is really boring but it helped me out cos im having a test about the book tomorrow and i didnt want to bother reading the book so thx for the upload :P
The thematic is just great (i just ran through reading the play, the original book, the german version and now this original) - The sentence that really made me think was "yes, you woud've made great nazis". I'm convinced that without historys warning, I would too...
Honestly it's not soooo well written. But the scenario itself gives goosebumbs. And it is pretty short, took me only one afternoon...
the american Educational is very close to the book, so, having seen that, you don't have to read it necessarily. Though there are versions with an interview with Ron Jones in it (the teacher who originally conducted the experiment) and thats pretty interesting.
I think this is really kind of creepy. I think it's a great lesson to learn though. We should all have an opinion and never let anyone take it away from us; never be afraid to share it. We have to keep our eyes open. Stuff like this didn't just happen in Nazi germany. It happens everyday to normal people like you and me.
well, since morthon rhue's book is based on this movie's script and the new movie is a new fictional interpretation of Ron Jones' experiment, it's no surprise that the old movie "sticks closer to the book" (just check the movie and book credits)
well, the new film is way better, but there is a big difference between them:here the end is good for everyone but on the film,a boy is shot and another one kills himself.what happened really?
Actually as the real mr. Ross just told me - neither movie is true to the actuall events.
I allways thought this movie here would be true to the actuall events (at least it is WAY closer than the other movie) but it's not true to the events either. The former students are working on a documentary which will be true to the events so keep your eyes open.
And of course in reality nobody got shot - that's just artistic exageration.
The maker of the German Re-make merely based it on the events, and replaced the time from the date of where the actual experiment ahppened, to modern-day Germany. Consider this an option: If someone were to do this again, in our time, how far do you think the students will go? That someone will buy a gun and starts shooting people is a very possible scenario... As the new one implies: guns can be sold easily to anyone
yeah, except that i just told you that it wasn't like it is portrayed in the german remake at all, actually the remake is merely a work of fiction made to entertain (that's not what i say, that's what the real teacher told me).
The events in the german remake did not happen. But the events in the book that this old movie here is based on did basicly happen. Except of course that there was no love story and things where way more terrifying than how they are potrayed here. Some of the old students who experienced it are working on a documentary that is gonna be true to the facts - so keep your eyes open.
I definetely keep my eyes open. One of my teachers when I was at primary second school, tried this with us too, but we refused to create a logo. the other class created a logo, did a slogan AND they were runing outside like.....You know what I mean .___.
It wasn't THAT horrible, but it was a shock though how easy it was to manipulate them.
people followed hitler because at that time, germans had no leader and hitler showed them that he's a good leader (at the time) and everything but still...
well, like it's said in the concluding naration of my favorite Outer Limits episode: "blind faith can lead us to light - or plunge us into eternal darkness" (-:
IMO, its a tribal mentality. all humans have it, whether its sports' team, gangs, town, state, country, cults, etc. Its just a question of commitment by the one doing the influencing and the one being influenced.
He did not make an entire country bad. The german nation simply followed him. that didn't make ALL of them bad. as they said in the beginning of this movie, less than 10% of the german population was a Nazi. I have no respect for what happened back then, yet i do know WHY the people followed Hitler so blindly. But I have to agree about barnsoldat91. He obviously has no real idea of what Hitler caused. Rapture, tragedy, and millions of deaths, not only the 6 million jews.
well, the new film was better. the old movie shows not enough examples how the students act for the wave by the way like in the book or in the new film. anyway, in the film are to many missing important parts.
This Movie here covers all the events that ACTUALLY happened. The events in the new film on the other hand are no longer based on what actually hapened.
i understand completely how susectible people can be to fall into this artice, or brainwash, but with all those nazi semblences, he armband, the pose etc. youd have to be immensely dense...or just have fallen asleep in history class more then a few times
they show that its not only sth. german to get in a fashism regime...
it could be evrywhere...
and why you peoples have proplems with the word Kraut, i am from Germany, and this word is older than WWII or WWI...
and Raffi493...how should we eccept...we Germans arent allowed to have pride...and when someone is interested in history everyone would call him a nazi...hey equal what we do...we will be forever marked as Nazis...really forever...if we are some or not..
