@bjornsiborgsi. If you really believe that amateur players would defeat Rosewall and Laver, then not only do you not know what the hell you are talking about, but also( to quote one of Vincent Bugliosi's favorite expressions) "your mind has taken leave of your body" which of course is a fancy way of saying that your mind is on the planet Mars.
@gyrate4. Wikipedia is wrong. The 110 square inch,95 square inch, and 125 square inch graphite/kevlar Pro Staff rackets were introduced after Wilson introduced the 85 square inch ProStaff midsize graphite/kevlar racket in 1984.
Notice Connors preparation, short back swings but complete follow throughs. He brings his racquet back early positions it perfectly for making contact with the ball. John McEnroe uses an even shorter backswing so that he is ready even earlier to use his opponents pace against him. Both of these guys were fantastic.
legend has it that jimmy's groundstrokes got it roots on practising on a wood surface so he has the flat strokes on the rise backhand and forehand with awesome speed delivery.
mac's reflexes are simply incredible...and connors is simply drilling the returns. how mac can control the racquet still baffles me after all these years...this is still totally compelling 25 years later...their respective skills are amazing...
macenroe. 1984 was mac's best year of his career. he posted the best win/loss record that year that federer was attempting to better a few years ago and couldn't. he won the uso and wimbledon, didn't go to australia, and ofcourse lost to lendl in his classic come from behind win at the french final
my god what a running forehand at the end my connors, simply unbelievable, mac thought he had hit a winner with that volley........ i was under the impression that tennis in the 70s and early 80s (80-84) was slow but after seeing this match i glad to c that i was wrong, tnx for posting this video
You got that right. He basically got tired at the french. After yelling at the cameraman at the start of the third set, he also lost a little concentration.
I think had Connors used his serve more particularly against lesser players, he wouldn't have been so tired when he got to finals. I think he could have made Mac and Borg's impact minimal.
connors serve really wasn't a weapon...his first serve wasn't attacked except when playing mccenroe, who ate it up....connors second serve was a bit behind the times. the biggest improvement in connor's game in '84 came when he finally switched from a steel (small head) frame to a (mid size plus)graphite racket. connor's game markedly improved.
If you look at the Rosewall match. He used his serves very effectively. The spins and outwides as well as the power to keep him off balance. I don't think he had the type of confidence on hard surfaces for the serve like he did on grass.
rosewall match?! what century are you from. this is 2009. was there running film then? people like rosewall and laver today would be beaten by amateur players. federer has a rosewall for breakfast and a laver for wine after his dinner
mac was virtually unbeatable in '84. connors was so destroyed at '84 wimbledon he refused to grant bud collins an interview and stormed off. connors was still using his beloved wilson t-2000.

the very first point of this video is incredible -- you forget how fast they are and how hard they can hit.

this was the last year of an 11 year streak where the men's title was won by a left-hander(Connors and McEnroe won 9 of those).

McEnroe's hands at the net were absolutely incredible. One of the great volleyers of all time

he would've won the french and captured the grand slam in '84 if he had just worked on his cardio as hard as connors or lendl.
