The Westerly Ambulance Corps in Rhode Island (initially known as Westerly Sanitary Corps) was established in 1917. That is a lot earlier than than 1928!
@ronmac7609 Westerly Sanitary Corp was the Westerly Red Cross at that time, a division of the Red Cross, which was a national disaster and wartime relief service created in 1864. The first freestanding volunteer ambulance service was organized in Roanoke in 1921.
A previous viewer wanted to know where to find this video. If you have not located it, it was produced by Mosby Publishing and is still available on Amazon. I had the pleasure of knowing the late James O. Page and actually had him speak in front of the California Fire Chiefs Association several times. He delivered the original History of EMS years before the video and it was excellent. All medics and EMTs, both public and private should see this video.
Watch this video & learn ! We have a short but impressive history. Although It's sad really, the same problems that affected our forefathers are still painfully alive & well today. I see the infighting still continues (see comments below)
Please don't disgrace the fine work that Jim Page & many others like him accomplished in their careers. Do them proud, serve the people, not yourself !!!!

Fuck the fire department. We have to stop blaming everyone four our shortfalls. It's the red headed step child of every system. It will never get better, because nobody does anything to quell the abuse.
@CraftyOffRoadAmb If your an EMT with a private EMS company and absolutely hate FD based EMS, then stop dressing like firefighters. It makes you look like wannabees, struttin' around with a turnout coat and helmet.

I was recently on a "dreaded medical call" (SOB in this case) where the pt. was in respiratory failure, I was in the process of intubating the pt. when the fire captain said "can we clear we don't like this medical stuff?" This would be the same crew that sprints to the fire truck at any hint of a structure fire yet drive as slow as possible to a cardiac arrest hoping to be cancelled by the ambulance so they can return to thier big screen TV, recliners, and pint of ice cream.
EMS is now and will likely allways be the red headed step child of the fire department. The only reason why most (but certainly not all) Fire dpt's provide EMS services is to justify thier huge budgets. Whats wrong with private, city/county, or PUM run EMS services that provide great EMS with excellent response times? How does the fire department think they can provide patient care any better?
@THFD I just started an EMS course @ the high school level. I told my instructor about some of your videos. She requested that I ask you to please email a copy of "History of Modern EMS", and any other EMS videos you think might benefit a high school EMS class to wolfec@wcde.org. Thank you for posting, -Kevin Lowe (David Crockett High School Health Sciences)
Some folks have asked for copies of this video. You can search for the Youtube Downloader to acquire a copy.
Some folks are also insisting on credit for "firsts," so I thought I would correct a few items:
The first hospital based ambulance service was Commercial (Cincinnati General) in 1865.
The first mandatory training program was in Toronto Canada, established in 1889.
The first volunteer ambulance service was established by Stan Wise in Roanoke in 1921.

First defibrillator was demonstrated by Paul Zoll in 1956.
First mouth-to-mouth training occurred with Baltimore Fire under Peter Safer in 1958.
First CPR manikin was Resusci-Annie, from Asmund Laerdal in 1960.
The first out of hospital advanced ambulance service was in Belfast, Ireland, in 1966.
New York St. Vincents was second, after the White Paper was published, and was designed using the Belfast service as a model.
The first EKG was transmitted by Dr. Eugene Nagel, with Miami Fire, in 1967.

First ECG transmitted from the field to a hospital E.R., City of Miami Fire-Rescue.
First IV's and intubations in the field by Paramedics; City of Miami Fire-Rescue.
There's another very well made documentary film entitled "The First Paramedics" BY Mike Tebilcock.
He can be contacted through the City of Miami Fire-Rescue, Fire Prevention Bureau.

It's not a bad video, but not entirely accurate. There were a few key points left out as well.
Such as:
The Term "Paramedic" was first coined by Dr. E. Nagel in Miami Fl.
First ever Paramedic training program; Given by Dr Nagel and Dr. Hirschman for the City of Miami Fire Rescue.
First transmitted ECG; Dr Hirschman in Miami to a hospital ship off the coast of Africa.
First successful defibrillation in the field by Paramedics; City of Miami Fire-Rescue.
