Comparing John Mayer to Richie Kotzen? I'm all for everyone having their opinions, but in mine, the only comparison between these two is that they both are known for playing strats. Mayer is a fine guitarist, but Richie is phenomenal one. Frankly, Mayer's voice makes me angry, Richie's makes me want to cry. If you think Richie's a good blues player, you should go pick up some of his old instrumental shred albums and see just how versatile a guitarist he really is.

I like Mayer fine. He's got his own kind of blues style. Its simple but effective. Its like everybody tries to be so complex, but Mayer just kept it simple and down to the blues and it works fine for him. But yeah, Richie is a god. Great guitar player, and a really dynamic voice.

I play guitar... he is a competent player. Sure, he doesn't have the chops of a jazz fusion player, but he doesn't need them. Music isn't about the skill of the musician, its about the music. He writes catchy riffs, and his solos are simple yet melodic. As a result, GNR became the most popular rock band in the world. If skill made the music, Slash would be unknown compared to Buckethead.
