You make it look easy but from experience, I know it's not. It gets quite challenging at the 4-minute mark where Pino starts using 16th notes all over the place. Well done.
i bought an oc2 i found one used and i also have a MM fretless and i could NOT get that sound with it~!~~~ I found that its more than oc2 there is chrous going on there as well..i patch my sound with a tascam device i use..but its not pratical...ato71 always sounds good.
Thanks for taking the time to reply, the Boss OC-2 seems to crop up a lot with bassists I speak to, it seems very popular.
Keep posting it's great stuff and inspiring.
I am watching everyones right hand now I am taking up the bass as well as guitar - (25 years guitar) and I have to start from scratch on the right hand! EEk!
nice work! superb 12th fret work very jaco!pino really shone in the 80's but not many people knew who he was,if you check out the guitar of steve boltz on 'no parlez' it really was great team work and steve wrote ku kurama!!brilliant song, brilliant guitarist, brilliant bassist....brilliant days......
Nice bass line, nice performance, YOU ARE A MASTER!!! excelent.. You knok I see you videos because I enjoy them so much... I play drums but always apreciate a good bass line (many people dont realize how beautiful is to play bass).. thankssssss
Great job ato71, I love your fretless work. The Sabre rocks too - has me drooling! What strings are you using on the fretless? I have TI flatwounds on my fretless Stingray 4 (looks like Pino's), to avoid chewing up the fingerboard, but they obviously give a totally different tone. Cheers
As for the strings, I'm using D'Addario Halfrounds: me too, I don't wanna ruin the fretboard (it's still the original) but I have absolutely no feeling with the flats.
Junge,Junge Alle Achtung!!! Alle anderen spielen Du machst verdamt gute Arbeit Schöne Grüße aus Garmisch-Partenkirchen Wenn Du mal in Germany bist, Komm mal vorbei Servus Wolle
Almost lost for words, that was brilliant. my favourite track from Paul Young, could it ever have been so good without pino ?, I feel it was his bass that made the song. I play it over and over in the car, Just cant get enough of it.
I absolutely think that every song played by Pino sounds good because of him (and I mean sound and notes)! I got a Live CD by Paul Young without him on the bass: actually the bassplayer plays the right notes but the result his quite different...
me too: I started playing when Arena had just been released and I loved the early Duran (Rio and 7th ragged tiger). I know little of the Power Station (probably only some like it hot). But considering the role of Bernard Edwards (another one of my idols) in that production it'll be interesting getting a bit more into that!
Normally I'm a big proponent of using tabs to get started in learning a song, but I don't think there's ever been a bassline as prominent in a song as this one. It's as upfront as Paul Young's vocals, and that basically NEVER happens when you have a singer + hired backing band.
The album Colours is mostly Pino, one of the best tracks, and a hit single, was Words. Not quite the complexity of the Paul Young stuff, but some sweet playing to a good tune.
Keep the postings going, I enjoy listening to your playing, I even tried a couple myself :-)
Wow, I've taken a look at the Words vid on the tube... the bassline is fantastic, very lyric, it perfectly meets my taste. Thanks for the clue, I'll surely give it a try.
There's a vid on the tube (not live) where he uses both 3-5th and 8-10th position. In my case I play it 8-10th mainly because the G string sound of my Sabre has little body and sustain and, when possible, I prefer not to move a lot along the neck (6 strings habit).
Absolutely BRILLIANT and most ENJOYABLE to watch!!!

Great tone Ato, I am new to bass can you tell me do you have any effects to get that sound? Octaver? Chorus or reverb?
Thanks
j2112c 1 year ago
@j2112c Thanks mate. On this one I used an Octaver (Boss OC2). But I usually don't use effects on my basses.

I hope my child, who is into music so much, stays with it long enough to get that good. Thank you for the treat.

Funny that someone mentioned Christians.
I have looked at these videos thinking the same thing.
I had the colors disc since the 80's I think. It is a timeless keeper, just like many of these Pino recordings.
Look forward to hear you give it a try . . .
PS
I admire John Taylors playing.
There is a guy on here who covers him well.
But he doesn't do one of my favorites by the Power Station called Communication. Would love to hear you cover that one.

I've been playing along with Pino for 25 years, but I've never beeen able to come as close as you. Nice job!
(BTW, I remember seeing Pino perform this on tv once, and I could swear he plays it mostly around frets 3-5, not high up, as you do.)
