This is the action that made me want Hearst dead. He took a powerful, smart, likable man like Al and completely dominated him. We could always rely, if not on anyone else, on Swearengen to be a strong pillar in Deadwood... Hearst took even that away.
Really wish I could have watched that fucker get his throat slit.
Al is more Bad ass than Tony Soprano and all others. Al Swearengen, or as I like to call him..Al Swear Engine is the ultimate gangster. ruthless, compassionate, no looking back, go forward. take your beatings like a man and even give some back when need be.
I love the Hearst character. He's like a living representation of corporate America. He's immune to laws and devourers any smaller enterprise in his way.
@shinofan18 This show stayed fairly faithful to the major histories of the characters. Hearst was not going to get killed, he was a real life person who went on to live long after his time in Deadwood and his family became one of the most powerful in all of the USA.
@Stiletos this is the reason why I say Deadwood did not end prematurely. Rather it ended exactly where it was supposed to; With the filthy rich guy getting away with murder and riding out of town owning everyone and everything there
@shinofan18 Don't you understand? He never did. History tells us that he fathered William Randolph Hearst...patron and sponsor of the same media empire.
This scene right here illustrates the difference between Swearingen and Tolliver. Do you think Al would let Hearst pull on his ear like he pulled on Tolliver's?
@tinclunge123 He has one of the leading roles on the tv-series Jericho, where he plays a good guy. It's the finest tv-series I have seen (Deadwood is third, after Jericho and Firefly).
Al's the type of guy who's willing to get his fingers broken for the greater good. He's a pimp and a murderer, but he's also a brave son of a bitch that sees the big picture.
I've often wondered if the unexpected cancellation of Deadwood wasn't in part due to the ire of the Hearst family.

I would dearly love to see how Al would deal with it if Doc Holliday came into town. Maybe try to hire him?

Man I wanted a season 4 finale that ended with Al cutting Hearsts throat.

@bonepaper Ha I know! I mean, I'm not sure of what else Al could have told him. He's not exactly Alma's best friend.

The finger smashes the same today. Take a big drink of oil. Smile a brown one. Get your ass to work.

This clip always confused me.
Surely Al knew what they were going to do, yet he just goes up that room alone, willingly.
Maybe I missed something.
JacobMcandles 2 years ago
al knew full well what was in store for him. he went alone as an act of defiance.
