Banks ATM use windows but dont connect through the internet as you would from home , you wont be able to hack into the atm itself youd have to hack into the bank .

Windows (or any Desktop OS) on an atm? That's ridiculous. This is ASKING for malware, viruses or exploits sooner or later. They should install a TRUE embedded OS on here, which just handles the ATM functionality and NOTHING more.

I'm pretty sure that ATMs are not connected to the public internet, so probably very difficult/impossible to hack from the outside.

6 months ago I did see a local supermarket self-service checkout terminal which had rebooted and was showing the XP desktop with touch screen enabled. This was connected to the public internet, because I was able to get IE6 (let's keep things secure NOT!) to start up, and access the MSN homepage on it.

Devices like tills and ATMs really should have a secure OS.

This isn't normal at all. First, ATM's should at most be connected to an internal network, hooking an ATM up to the Internet is a completely stupid thing to do. Secondly, ATM's more commonly run on RMX, OS/2, Java, Unix or Linux.

Are you sure? Do you work with ATMs? I've seen quite alot of them boot up and everyone of them had a "Windows 98" or "Windows XP" bootimage.

I never stuck my card into the one with Windows 98 tho... :p They might go through a encrypted network THROUGH internet.

Some ATMs namely IBM did used to run OS/2. But I think you'll find just about all ATMs now are running Windows.

I saw this once, it had to reboot, once it starts up, it runs the command prompt like the one in this video. Somebody asked if the machines are free when they trash them, yeah they are, but they destroy the hardrive I believe, I don't see why they wouldn't, since it probably contains some info that shouldn't be leaked.

I doubt one of these machines can run crysis let alone even probably store it. the HDD in these is probably a cheal one maybe only enough to hold the OS and everything needed for that machine to be an ATM but nothing else. as for the graphic card im guessing an outdated one. ATMs have ran windows for a while now. It is nothing new, and all business machines have run Windows, and I don't see them stopping anytime soon.

Despite being Windows, ATMs still remain pretty secure, you do not see anyone hacking ATMs to spew out money yet.
