    Patrick Gragg, Fort Collins,Colorado

  • I am about to purchase my first harmonica and I want to know what you think about the suzuki bluesmaster as a first harmonica?

  • been playin for a few months now and after watchin this i will of had my first lesson. when i picked it up i thort it was just a case of blowin' but ive taught my self a few things and im pickin it up as a go along, lets see if your video can help me get the basics sorted out. :)

  • Man the way you control the tempo is awesome ,.

  • ha you look like Johhny Reznick from the goo goo dolls :D

  • woooh what you play at the begin of this video is awsome.

could you send me the notes of the song?

  • cool : )

  • You rock bro. You're the reason why I got really interested in harmonica. Your videos really helped a lot. I wish I could play just like you do someday.

  • i dont even have a harmonica, but man, i enjoy watching this xD

  • If I could get to where I'm 1/100 as good as you, I'll be euphoric!

  • What kind of harmonica do I have if it plays the C major scale but also has an extra two notes? So it plays C D E F G A B C D E

  • @jacksonbaker94 Mine is also longer.

  • you blew me away

  • jason help me out herein the c scale the flat third is an ed what note do you hit do yo have to over blow the ed

  • you have come a long way from South Jackson, MS and Monday nights at Fields Cafe...would love to see you bud....Bill

  • I came here to learn how to play notes, a simple tune or anything but actually you covered so much of the more important stuff brilliantly. Tonality and note quality is something often forgotten but if you get it right on lesson 1 (video above) then you never need worry about it again. I never even thought about the guitar analogy but again, the science behind it is spot on. Thank you. About to go through your other vids. :)

  • just got my harmonica today for my birtday! Its a MarineBand honer :)

  • are you using lip pressing?

  • O.o

  • thats the harmonica i got!

  • Man, I´m just beginning, but I wanna tell you that your lessons are helping me here in Brazil to learn to play harmonica. Thanks a lot!

  • You my friend, you are officially my new god, can we learn how to play the intro please !!

  • wow its a white michael jackson!!! this time tho he blows instead of strumming ;P

  • i got two of ur albums they really good but i wish u wud play more acoustic like this u nearly always play amplified

  • Caught your awesome show at Telluride last fall. Jason, the way you rocked at that altitude, you must have some super human lungs. Now, influenced by you and Mr. Mel Melton, I am learning to play blues harp. Thanks for sharing the techniques behind the magic and your anguish in "Broken Toy." You are an amazing talent!

  • extra,,,,,,

  • I play guitar since I was fifteen, now that I'm almost twenty-three I felt the urge to discover new sounds and I found on a shelf an old arrow C harmonica... I tried to play it and in order to find some inspiration I searched the web for some lessons and I found this GREAT video! By the way, me and my friends really liked "Done With The Devil"! That overdriven harmonica sounds adds a more passionate mood to the songs... Cheers from Italy! Rock on, man! :-)

  • is that a chromatic?

  • if im playing a 12 bar blues in g the i ,iv, and v, will be g ,c and d rigth but in single note playin can i use others nothes beside the notes correspondin to g c and d that will be 3blow 4 blow etc... can i put some other single notes and how???

  • I use a Hohner G, anyone got any fun blues riddledidoo's for me? :)

  • diatonic means 2 noted

  • and thank you for taking time out of your day to share with us this video, friend =)

  • outstanding. i love the tempo provided by the foot tap.

  • Man, that dude is good!

  • old school j.r. ... sweet

@GrumpyGet, if you haven't figured it out in the last two months, go for the cross harp. lots of youtube material for playing blues in cross harp.

  • what key is he using?

  • It's a C harp, so i guess it's G...

  • I feel like so much of the time people look up tutorials or something like that, and even though they don't always explain much, they get really insppired to learn more which helps even more.

  • Great Vid, thanks for the post. Very in depth.

  • great vid has inspired me. A am prob an intermediate guitar player and I'm looking at learning the harp to go along with it. I play alot of acoustic blues stuff mostly in E. Should I go for a harp in the key of E or dgo for something known as "cross-harp" and get one in A. I'm a bit confused...........any help/ideas anyone?

  • the only problem I have with Jason is that's he's so damn good it's discouraging, that and the weird hair. Adam is much more my speed for learning from, he don't play whammer jammer much better than I do.

  • Don't worry about Jason's hair, I've known/followed him for years and it will change next week. Also if the Adam you referred to is Gussow, don't kid yourself when he let's loose, he plays a way mean harp! Just more true blues.

  • i've spent many hours listening to both of these guys and I think they're both fantastic, thnx, jason and adam

  • wooow cool

  • dont like it ? dont watch it...

  • Tsk tsk, contradicting yourself.

  • I finished this lesson but I'm not as good as him. I want my money back.

  • ahhahahahaha :)

  • @irishelim Same here! I've been at it non-stop for the past three minutes & I'm still shit.

  • thanks, awesome lesson!

  • i just wanted to tell u what an amazing performance you delivered in sacramento for spah. sacramento needs more talent coming through and please come back. also loved steve baker

  • good video, but technically diatonic means each hole has two notes, one on draw and the other on blow. by no means limited.

  • diatonic means 7 notes. just like how pentatonic means 5? yeah.

  • Diatonic means limited?!!! Hmmm, not in my theory books. Maybe I missed something, please correct me if I'm wrong but... How about 7 tones?

  • theory is used to explain music and help us understand music, not make music. if you know theory, you have a better understanding of how music works. when you have a better understanding, its easier to solo and make songs and make more complicated songs.

  • exaclty, negrokezo probably got into the blue;s so much that it got him thinking that feeling excludes knowledge.

  • Yes; but as you can hear the music it's becoming someting repetitive: same scales, same rythms...

can't create something new with all those "theory" restrictions.

In my damn opinion. I just LISTEN, not think; cause music it's 'bout that.

  • anything you do in music can be explained in theory. thats what theory is. there arent any restrictions because theory isnt rules. but please, tell me exactly what restrictions you think theory has. list them out please.

  • screw you ^^

  • And YOU are complaining about poor comments???

  • I m sorry if you are so fragile to feel ofended with that comment, :D!

i was only wondering if i could learn something from this video.

Didn`t meant to make you cry ^^

  • Let's try this again! So far you haven't commented on the video after my initial comment, you are far too busy making rude and patronising comments. If you are about 13 then this makes sense, otherwise grow up!

In addition, I stand by my initial comment , Jason is a very competent player but the video is not what it says to be. Simple as that. Compare to Adam Gussow videos and you will see the difference.

  • ö !!!

  • just kiddin dude... YOU ROCK!!!!

  • - That's pretty cool! :D

  • awesome *__*

cause of that i bought my first Harmonica 10 secs ago (:

    keep posting ;)

  • Started playing because of steven tyler, learned to play because of you....you fekkin ROCK bro...keep up the awesome job. I hope to catch your show when i get back from Afghanistan.

  • You Rock my friend! Thanks for the support. Steven Tyler rocks too.... Be safe getting home to us!

    J

  • is this harmonica a custom made? i mean i know you customize all yours, pretty much. I have a Hohner Bluesband in C, and I'm wondering how you get it to play that great, raw sound instead of the tin-ey "fresh from the box" sound.

  • This one happens not to be customized minus a little work I did on it open the backs setting gaps etc...Thanks for watching this ancient vid!

  • @jasonricci why be safe? u think afghanistan is just based on terrorism, stop watching tv. Most terrorist are muslims but most muslims aren't terrorists.

  • @justj99XX cmon man the guy was in the military and he was telling him to come home safe, regardless of whatever weird thing you implied for Jason as he kindly asked the person to come home safe is not how everyone thinks.....How could you even connect an innane comment like, come home safe, to be an anti muslim comment? what is wrong with you? Get it together man.......

  • @00boz Exactly the same here! (except for the 'learned' part, for that is still in progress).

    Cool.

    Cheers to Ricci and Tyler!

  • @00boz I started playing because of Bruce Willis :D

  • Yep, I brought three friends. My friend really liked the "Broken Toy" song. Some of the music was a little too heavy for my girl friend but I had a good time. I'm playing guitar in a Christian band for homeless people downtown Orlando and I'm learning the harmonica right now. Thanks for all the inspiration. God bless you buddy. P.S. RJ Harman did a great job opening for you

  • Thanks Theo! RJ Rules!

  • *cough cough* holy shit that beginning part made me nearly faint. That was epic.

  • Thanks man!

  • 6:55 hey look, it's bruno! (no offense)

  • Ok, I "discovered" you last Friday and lo and behold you are playing the Plaza Theatre in Orlando tomorrow night! I will be there and bringing friends too. Thanks for all the help man

  • Thanks did you make it out?

    J

  • hi! i have a doubt:

my harmonica has double holes, is there any difference to play single notes?

  • Yes, That harmonica is called a tremolo harmonica and its not supposed to play single notes.

  • awesome the best harmonica sound's i ever hear!! keep it up men its fantastic!!!!

  • Type

    2 minor scales

    into YouTube

and be inspired by this fella's delivery. He is a totally talented muso......willing to share...

    You'll learn so much.......

  • Where is the best place to get a Harmonica?

  • music instrument store?

  • That will do it.

  • I got mine from ebay

  • nice vid!!! if you can could you try to send to my channel the notes from the first impro, thanks

  • Very nice impro! last thing I heard before actually going to by my first harp!! Hope to be as good some day!!

  • You forgot to lick the harp, bluesman

  • what do you mean with licking the harp?

  • An old superstition

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you....and be sure to thank Dan for sending me your way, your very generous to teach the way you do. Thank you so very much!

  • That was a great lesson-some really good tips-hopefully it will help me with my breathing which is my main frustration I will have to what it a few times-thanks Jason

  • Wow you are excellent! awesome feel

  • That was very good, but looking at you when you're playing and ...how could I say it...repeat are two different things ;) So Jason, could you, if you will have any free time, check my playing and say what I'm doing bad?

  • lmao "bob dylan kinda"

  • did you improv that part in the beginning or is that an actual song cause that was sweet

  • thanks man yeah mostly all improv there...I'd have to watch and stop the video and relearn it to play it again. Thanks!

    Jason

  • Hi, great lesson!!!! i just got my first harmonica, and its in the key og A? I don't know if this is a problem, but you seems to be pretty damn good at playing harmonica, so... should i get a new one?

    -kris

  • awesome stuff! are you influenced by Steven Tyler?

  • forget the sound, check the rokken shirt...

  • i'm getting my first harmonica, in what key should i get it

  • Key of C

  • Nice playing +great lesson!

    :)

  • thank you 4 the lessons.wow sweet tone man.

  • thank very much 4 lessons.wow sweet playing jason.

  • Huge thank you. I've been playing since I was ten and never learned most of this stuff. I can't get enough. -- Keith

  • Dude you are phenominal on that harp.

This is why i want to learn, the harp, when played well, sounds so good in your ear XD

  • ahhhh! ..from the mouths of babes..

pay heed to these words, don't kill the messenger.

    Wise beyond his years..

    a thousand thankyous..

    K

  • oh my god! its the high quality harmonica or the playing that sound?

  • AWESOME!! O_O

  • GOD DAMN!!

  • ...was a way that allowed you to play single notes, but in the video it doesn;t seem like you're whistle styling....anyway... i hope you can specify, or clarify that, thanks... i really wanna learn how to whistle style but i only know how to tongue block

  • i wish i could tongue block- stuck with lip pursing though.

  • hey, thanks for the lesson man it was awesome but i think you didn't specify how to lippurse.... i mean... do you do it putting your mouth just like when you whistle or do you do it other way ???? cause I got a C harmonica and a little paper came with it that said that the "whistle style" was a way t

  • Hi Jason, Can you do a video talking more about how to actually breath from the diaphram? I got a lesson from Micheal Peloquin and he taught me how. I think a lot of players need more tone and they just don't understand. I would do it but players will listen to you. Oh yah, we are buddys on Myspace.

Thanks for all your cool videos

    Tony

  • Hi Jason, Saw you in the Mezz, Breda, the Netherlands, 2 days ago and just wanted to say that you... ROCK DUDE !!! Great show, great sound!!! YOU ROCK !!!

  • Were you like 10 years old when you made this?

You were awesome then, but I can tell a definite addition of smoothness over the years.

  • Hey, Jason I was very disappointed to miss you in Vancouver. I'm sure you heard about our big rock slide and the closed highway, eh? Just couldn't get there, alas. Here's a question that everyone wants to ask but it's embarassing- How the hell do you keep your lips wet and your reeds dry? For that matter, I watch you and Christelle and JP Allen and I never see you guys lick your lips, yet I read "keep them wet for smooth sliding." Too dumb to respond to?
  • I was afraid it was too dumb...

  • Sorry I've been busy sometimes I actually will wet the harp...but I think more or less after time you just get use to developing some kind of subconcious lubrication system...It's actually a great question becuase i'm afraid i don't really have an answer. The reeds STILL get stuck often(With Me)especially when I'm playing too hard from spit ...Playing softer and relaxing will give you just as much volume and more control less spit in the reeds and I THINK(Not Sure)more lubrication or less need

  • Hmmm..

Maybe you should address this, Jason.

You could be remembered as the guy

who forever changed the world of harping.

Maybe work with a manufacturer to develop

    teflon-coated cover plates.

Or Ricci snap-on cover plate covers,

    something like those iPod skins.

Or how about Ricci Lip Glide,

a sort of hybrid lip gloss/personal lubricant...

  • why does my harmonica doesnt sound like that i just bought it and bought anything well my harmonica says c where you blow i dont know if it means anything but well can anyone help?? [: thanks

  • Jason, hi

When my son decided to try the harp I instantly thought of you. So hopefully you'll be teaching him stuff that he'll enjoy for ever.

He's quadriplegic, so he'll be using a neck-style holder rather than his hands.

Just wanted to let you know that you're banking good karma!

    And to say thank you.

  • That is very touching! I have nothing to say back but thanks for pulling me out of my little selfish world and letting me hear this! Tell that boy all the tone comes from inside and hand vibrato is for old timers and cowboys!

  • "Tell that boy all the tone comes from inside and hand vibrato is for old timers and cowboys!"

    Perfect, Jason.

That's just what I was looking for.

    Thanks again.

  • Just RIPPIN' thanks Jason!

  • just saw you at the blues fest, AMAZING

  • Hey, I write for a living. Grammatically, your construction is better than 80 percent of English speakers. By the way, I've been in your Zurich hometown a few times. I rank it as the No. 1 most beautiful city on earth. I will never forget the train ride along the lake. I used to ride to Zurich from Salzburg just for that view. Picturing it now, blue, grey and white mountains reflecting onto the blue water... very beautiful.

  • Amazing! Thank you! It will be a great pleasure for me to meet you here in Zurich the next time you will come: you can send me a mail via youtube before. ;) we have already 2 thinks to share!!! Best regards.
