This is my mommy’s music. I was raised hearing this kind of jazz in my house. And recently I was helping my mommy move some things and found a Ahmad Jamal record from the 1950s or early 1960. Makes me wish I had stayed with those piano lessons my mommy used to take me to.
Saw him live at the Blue Note in New York in 2005. He was backed by Idris Muhammed on drums and James Cammack on bass. Incredible set. Unfortunately I saw his second set of the night and he played Swahililand during the first set. He played Poinciana during the second, which is the sample for Stop Frontin' by KRS One.
Yo I always love the beat for Stakes is High and this song just made me a fan of someone I've never heard of dope sample from a dope song. This takes you on a voyage. I love jazz
@kitches1991 Easy, hey extracted all the piano notes he needed from 7:48-8:05-8:10 region, that didn't have congas, high passed notes and overlayed them on bassier notes, using the MPC3000's low pass resonant filter. Hip-hop is the art of truncation and chopping, flipping, and cooking up some amazing treats!
Can't any of you rapper appreciate the original piece without mentioning some track that sampled this? BTW, It's about time you guys picked up a real instrument.
@frankisright Stop being so ignorant. If rappers hadn't sampled classics from the past like this, only you and a handful of other elitists would be here whining about how little views it has. Hip-hop gives the old soul classics new life and keeps them living for decades. Without the sampling, most of it would have been lost in the vault. So appreciate it rather than whining about "real instruments". Even the soul and funk legends respect and appreciate hip-hop.
@frankisright Chill bruh...hip hop is what brought us to these classics. Free your mind dude...for real. The rap fans are the only guys appreciating this stuff nowadays.
@Sinosure He extracted a lot more notes then you would expect... especially towards the end of the song... that's the Pete Rock / Madlib thing... sampling the end of songs, rather than from the beginnings.
@speedskis777 Yes he did! Not samples. And I make electronica, no samples(too 80s). But I love Bill Evans and Hiromi and Keith Jarrett and it's wonderful to discover the source. And his bass lines kill me.
@TEARFUR71 i think you're right. always thought this was the sample , but when the real original played in some sample mix i found online i was pretty confused...
I'm SOOOOO PISSED!!! I can't find this version of the song or even this album on Amazon or iTunes!!! AUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH!!!
@Mccritical80 I know what you mean, but a lot of people fell in love with the song because of it being sampled. Plus for hiphop heads its like a hobby/obsession finding sample sources cuz producers dont like giving that kind of info.
Jamal is one creative musician and he also has the technique which helps him express himself.Pretty sad that more people don't listen to this music...Enes
Hip hop is finding those places and points of deep communication between artists of the past, and bringing them to the next generation as proof positive of life and love of music, and genius. We must continue to pay homage (and royalties) to the past and continue to push their music into the future.
@earthspirit0722 that's the late Jamil Nasser on bass and the late Azzidin Weston on conga, the very next year I took over the percussion chair. Played with Ahmad from 75 until 93.
Gives me the chills.
