A quicker way now is to used the Akai Vyzex software. I have an MPK25 and all you do is call up the Vyzex editor, select pad, double click "Note" and then hit the key you want to assign it to. I found it easier if you pre mapped a sample to the pads and found the keys they assigned to. I had to alter my BPM maps a little as they were not all in the correct order. pHATmatik Pro assigned all chops to C3 onwards, when the MPK automatically assigns to C1, so I had to move all manually.

how do u do this on a mac? in preferences on the mac there is no mapping tab, only a main tab :( im on the latest version of bpm

simply use the GM drum preset on the mpd.
or you could use the mpc2500 preset
