WOW, games were sure expensive back then! Using today exchange rate (1 UK pound sterling = $1.60 US) a Mega Drive game would cost anywhere from roughly $63.91 US to $79.89 US...and I believe the exchange rate was even higher back then..like around $1.80 US on average so you'd really be talking anywhere from $71.98 US to $89.98. You Brits were getting fleeced!
You could just do a 60hz mod and play them in full-speed + use an RGB scart cable on the Mega Drive for max picture quality.. but i guess nobody did this back in the day...
@lyris1 they where always £44.99 I very rarely seen a game more than that, 3 or 4 times. in fact that is the rrp for all games even until now. and pal is logical
@BIGPIMPINUPDANYC To me, the 3-button Mega Drive controller as well as the model 2 Saturn controller are the best D-pads ever made. You can just slide your thumb on it especially if the game has 8 directions such as the NHL series or various space shooters. Games that utilize less buttons can still require great skill to beat.
I too was more a SNES kid myself, but I'll admit nobody was in Sega's league when it came to the D-pads. Although the D-pad on the Dreamcast controller was horrible.
Fuck me, I didn't realise my mum and dad were paying that much for games. Thats probably like £80 todays money. Better keep quiet, Micro$oft will get ideas...
Lol, too true. What alot of people don't realise about the Mega Drive is that it's lower upfront cost for the console was the ONLY thing about it that was cheaper than the SNES.
The short answer is: I am a professional videophile and also a perfectionist. I would redo this and make it better, if I still had the tape.
Long answer: recorded on a good VCR (Mitsu HS-B82) in the 1990s, captured from another good VCR, treated with wavelet noise reduction, encoded at a high bit rate and sent to YouTube (who didn't seem to screw it up much).
I'm in the early stages of making a MegaDrive arcade machine. Would you mind If I had it play this? The idea is for it to show megadrive adverts when it's not playing games.
anyone recognise the voice? its on the tip of my tongue but i just can't quite think of it. i keep thinkin vinnie jones but i'm pretty sure thats not it hehe
Oh dear! Such an awesome advert! I remember watching this when I was 8 years old! XD I'm so glad someone put up the "Cyber Razor Cut Song" version of this advert. There's a Cyber Razor Cut advert that was generally used in the 90s but it doesn't have this awesome song in it. Thanks for the upload! :)
There should more of these ads coming out on Youtube remastered like this one, maybe a whole montage compilation. Brilliant stuff.

Doesn't this tune sound like the Mast Blast / Cannon Cluster music in Donkey Kong Country Returns? What an amazing coincidence!

Much preferred the SNES, more buttons and a more accurate D pad meant you could build up skill.

Amazing quality. I thought this quality was only possible with S-VHS in those days.

@RabidRaccoonUK It's mostly due to the noise reduction. I could do a better job now though, but I am lazy and have other stuff to work on :)

Amazing, how the hell did you manage to get this in such excellent immaculate quality picture and sound?
All the other Sega pirate tv shows/ads have far shoddy quality!

I see, you need to have the original source of video to improve it?,
this is the only decent Sega pirate tv ad on youtube by far.
anymore?
segano1 2 years ago
Well yes, garbage in, garbage out. Or in this case, crummy video in (it's VHS), OK-ish video out.
Of course, most video on YouTube is such shit that even this looks amazing by comparison.

Something tells me you don't want to be a hedgehog around Dave. I've started working on a Trans formers Rip off.
I might put Vivian from the Young ones in it and have him turn into his car...

actually, on reflection, i think it could actually be steven o'donnell himself (the guy in the vid) spudgun off bottom.
