@hartistry1957 Listen to good producers/musicians, leave the DAW for a while, play with old synths from previous songs, listen to a previous song in reverse, (this worked for me once...) change DAWs (fruity loops, ableton, logic pro, etc) or a personal favorite: google chord progressions in whatever key you prefer and use those. (having a chord progression already made will help you kickstart a song)
These Reason tutorials are the only ones I will watch. If I ever make any money creating electronic music, I will owe this guy at least 10% of whatever I make.
did u got to MIT or some shit....?? Damn Sound Scientist. How can anyone know all of that... I cant process that shit -just send me some patches / refills . help I need good reese bass synth
You're so awesome as always. Love your tuts man. I laughed today btw, because it's so fun when people call techno "futuristic". Because it's SO 80-90-00... I think people in the future are gonna look back at the electronic explosion of material more like something passé than futuristic xD Or like we look at sci-fi's in the 50's. Very few that "cut it" haha. Cheers!
I can't read any of the digital settings - especially setting up the bass as you have it - can't get anything close to that sound, and I love it! Could you please list them out? Thanks a lot, great stuff
Awesome vid! Post more, with Reason 5 and how to make Glitch Mob style sounds as well as wobbly Bass grooves like Rusko, BassNectar! I'd also live to see how to make sounds like Wolfgang Gartner and DeadMau5! Thanks! grr8 job!
and you mension dubstep haha... joke aside, its awesome how much you can learn. I am doing some (I think) very cool stuff, with Flying Lotus as my main inspiration, i just do my own thing with it. Where when and who should i send it to? And does anybody know where..ANYwhere you can find a producer/sound designer live chat forums.. i'd love to join you guys!
Hey solid vid. Informative in that it gave explanations for things, Useful in that it provided a real example, Friendly in that you didn't assume that only sound engineers watched your videos, Academic in that you did introduce concepts such as WAVES and stuff like that. Solid video. Maybe you could do a few more on Thor, just to show more and more of what we can do what that synth, especially the modulation part of Thor
Hey dave ! how you doing man ! I am from brazil and I always watch your videos on you tube but i never found any of them talking about psychedelic trance producing. i would like to see you teaching all the tricks about psy trance production if you can...like the other ones, i beg you to make a 7 day psy trance production man, please. by the way how can I get a real pumpimg psychedelic trance bass and lead sequencer in reason 4?
Sweet videos man! How do I make a region for the sequencer in Thor. I know it's not like redrum where you can right click "add pattern to track" but there must be some way to record or patch it so I can turn it into a region.
Your tutorials have got me off to a fantastic start. It would be good if we could get some more going into specific elements of Reason and maybe a set on pure music theory for total music noobs like myself.
nicely done :) im considering reason 4, but i hate the new sequencing part with making boxes, and the automation lines being more time consuming to make because of those crappy white dots... Reason 3 still wins in userfriendlyness for me. But the Thor is kick ass... ! What to choose.. sigh
hey same with me!!! I used to use Reason 3, but I got 4 a few weeks ago.
When I got started, I decided that the grouping thing was a pain in trhe ass .. but you do get used to it. It does annoy me though that if you click on a different group with the pencil, it clears itself. The automation lines aren't so bad though...
4 does improve though as it has more available, plus you can copy and paste easier in arrange mode
hey Dave, how come on most of these synths ur putting the oscillators through the 2 & 3 slots and not the 1& 2? is the first oscillator slot unique compared to the other 2?
holy shitting daisy chainguns, i just figured how to record changing the position of the formant filter over a track i made in the stretching metal preset. i dunno how to describe it any better than an 80's apocalyptic sci-fi soundtrack sound. i've only had reason 4 a week , but it's already fun as hell learning how to use it :D
I own a juno106 and have been looking for lots of analog keyboards. However, last night I spent a good four hours tweaking with filter automation inside of Thor and got some AWESOME sounds out of it. ADding in the reverbs from the RV1000 and using the EQ is the mastering makes it even better. Anybody who acts like analog is everything and digital is nothing is a purist douche as far as I'm concerned. This is one powerful piece of software...
I did a tutorial on using Thor as a switchable filter in a combinator patch, if you want to check it out. It's less about sound design and more about the process of routing it properly.
I like your tutorials, good explanations and good flow. Keep it up!
how did you get the "pump bass"(as i like to call it) pump on the off beat.....LFO 1 only has 8th notes and 16th notes and stuff....but no offbeat setting...how'd you fix that? =D
yea i figured that out right after i commented on the video =D thanks man!! hey you made a comment about "th0rn93's" dubstep beat and i went and looked at it...and his wobble bass sounds BAD ASS!!! can you make a tut on how to get it to sound like his.....cuz no offense but the one you had us make(i thinks) need to be beefed up a little more....sounds a little plain ^_^
@myfaceispurple A much better way to make a Bass line pump, or "breathe" as i call it, is to avoid the delay knobs and simply use a Compression sidechain. split the audio from your drum kick(or make a new redrum and use the main out to keep the kick silent) and route it to the sidechain input on the compressor on your bass(turn your ratio up and threshold down. Put in a kick pattern and the bass will lessen as the kick hits, causing a cool effect and giving your kick more room in the mix.
@MarFreq yea i've figured this out now...........this comment was 8 months ago xD i've gotten SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better......another thing that helps sidechain compression is to turn the attack all the way down and the release to about 3/8's of the way up =) but the delay knob worked great for what i was doing at the time(hardstyle) because sidechaining is like a breathing effect....the LFO is RIGHT away...but i do electro/house now so i sidechain all the time xD
@myfaceispurple I know its wayyy late, but you use the side-chaining technique. Open up a new redrum and put a kick on the 1,5,9,13. Then press "tab" and youll see a "Chaining Aux" area in the back of your mixer. Use a spider splitter and wire the redrum into there. It gives you that Benny Benassi "pumping" that sounds killer. Hope that helped.
@valax300 ya man wow....this just made me realize how good of a producer i've become in just a year......i've already stopped using reason and use ableton now haha.........when i watched this video i was know one......now im gigging in LA......thanks for giving me an eye opener =D
@myfaceispurple Ha, I know right - I feel the same way when I listen to my first tracks from about a year ago. Btw Ive been wondering this for a while... I started making music with reason 4 and thats all Ive ever really used....since youve used both, do you like ableton better? Im thinkin i might get ableton and switch over
Hey man love your tutorials, they've taught me a whole lot about mixing with Reason.
I was messing around with panning effects, and was wondering if you're supposed to keep the wawas and other bass synths in the middle? Or will you not lose any bumpin' if you pan them off to the sides a bit?
Generally if you want something to be more powerful, either have it in the center or have it both left *and* right :) Stereo Imaging (with the MClass stereo imager in reason) is a good way to do that!
Panning left and right is usually for creative purposes or putting less prominent effects somewhere other than the center of the mix to make it clearer :)
