@simms0022 A reasonable press, set of carbide dies, scale, calipers, case trimmer, powder funnel... could probably do it for around $250 - plus the cost of powder, bullets, and large rifle primers. I'd say about $350 could get a guy rolling on this. You also need a sturdy bench so that you can bolt the press down tight. Load data can be found online but you really need to study a reloading manual before starting out.
I have the 4" and the 8 3/8" version...luv em. I just always pay attention to my thumb location because if something is in front of the wheel while shooting....bad news. Looks like u handle the beast pretty well. I love it when my friends say their palm is numb after shooting it.
@R1Beowulf Sounds like the perfect set-up you have there. I missed out on an 8-3/8" last year, could have got it for $700 but wanted to think about it overnight; my loss.
I used to shoot all of my guns, even my autos - thumb-down. Since changing my grip I keep forgetting to lock it down with revolvers and my thumb turns a lovely shade of black after a few cylinders worth of ammo... or one shot from the mighty 500. haha.
@phishst1cks And he's blind on one eye and can't see out of the other, right?.
He loads macaroni noodles and shoots into the three foot berm. If you're watching these old videos you must be REALLY bored, Mr. Phish. Now I gotta go over and see what you've been up to - probably a video of yourself shooting the steel plates you stole from that oil rig.
@ZombieSlayer1200 Yes, very accurate. Tell your wife that even a child could shoot this without breaking a wrist, detached retina?... Maybe, but no broken bones!
The speed in which the recoil occurs is most impressive. The straight on camera angle from :42 - :50 demonstrates it best, that bad boy snaps back so fast the camera can't capture the movement. Couple that with the scene of Mr. S&W 500 rocking you back on your heels and I can feel it all the way down here in Cajun country.
@Gabay54 Cajun Country?! Cool, makes me think of that 1981 movie - Southern Comfort.
This is a gun you feel in your face more than your hands. The compensator tames the recoil but the muzzle blast definitely lets you know you're not just curled up on the couch with a good book, no, you've got a 500 Mag in your hands and it's giving you a pretty good slap in the face every time the hammer falls. That's why I got the short barrel version, for maximum effect.
Way cool gun and video man!!! That flame it throws at the end of the clip is bad ass. Cool Ozzy tune you applied too. Thinkin' about gettin a 4" .500Magnum. I almost bought a 6.5" .500Mag, but backed out. Any thoughts between the two you can share would help. I'll keep watchin' for more vids from ya!!!
@ludwigdrummer1 Thanks for watching and here are my thoughts: If applying a massive amount of energy to a distant target is your goal, then go with the heavier, less recoiling, longer sight radius, and somewhat higher velocity producing long barreled version. If the reason you choose this caliber is for the blast and flash effect, then by all means get the short one. Any X frame revolver is going to feel like you're hanging a boat anchor on your belt if you want to carry it around with you.
@FrankMurphy13 You will like it, I'm sure of that. Cheaper ammo is fun but for a real thrill try some hot Cor-Bon or any premium stuff. Just hang on to that thing when it goes off. The recoil is not painful due to the awesome grip design and efficient muzzle brake but the blast from hot loads will definitely give you a slap in the eyes. Happy shooting.
This particular load from Hodgdon gave me a cronograph average of 1493 fps with the Hornady XTP 350's.
Dropping down to 37.0 gns of Lil'Gun the max dev. was very stable at 19 fps with a max Vel. of 1461. Sometimes max loads don't improve velocity much, they just start the grass on fire.
Barnes 375 gn solid copper XPB hollow points drove at a whopping 1768 fps with 44.0 grains of Lil'Gun. This powder was originally intended for .410 shotshell loading but works well with the 500 Mag.
Shorter barrels exhibit more recoil and muzzle blast with a marginal loss in velocity. The 500 Mag has a wide variance of ammunition available for a huge difference in felt recoil. Most factory ammo is relatively mild.
The huge blast is what is appealing about this gun and that's why I chose a 4" barrel.
It is not painful, you just have to assume a proper shooting grip with a forward upper body bias and elbows slightly bent when the hammer falls. The most notable thing about shooting this gun is the incredible shock wave felt on the face, eyes, body, sinus cavity, etc... but it's not what I would consider painful. At least I haven't suffered from a detached retina yet.
Nice video...Well done. There are tons of S&W 500 vids on youtube now but this is the first one I've seen with all of the angles. Looking down the barrel as you're shooting towards the camera is impressive...those 1/2" holes are pretty imposing!!! Thanks
Thank you, I just got back from Sportsman's Warehouse where I picked up some Barnes 275 XPB solid copper HP"s... expensive but very accurate. It's time to load up!
You are going to love that new gun of yours because it always gets attention at the range and your friends that shoot it will have bragging rights in the lunchroom at work.
Handload with your favorite magunm powder, use RIFLE primers, and Barnes 275gn XTB's for awesome accuracy.
thats a really nice hand cannon you got there probably dont get to shoot it too much huh @ 1.50 a piece. nice handling, that fire ball is huge coming out of that thing. btw what song is that in the background?
Yes, When printing groups on paper from the sandbag or making a precision long range shot I will cock the hammer. Handling this gun with the hammer back requires extra attention because if you inadvertantly touch one off before you obtain your tight shooting grip you will be wearing the gun in your face.
*Notice my support hand slips off on the first double action shot.
Great video, I like the camera angles. I think thats the fastest I have seen anyone shoot the .500 with a heavy load. Ive got one of the 8" barrels myself, I would like to get one of the 4" also.
If you want to target shoot or hunt get the 8-3/8". If you want the full magnum experience with every shot and split firewood or just blow up things then get the 4 inch which will carry nicely in a belt holster even though at 3 1/2 pouds will try to pulls your pants down. And what about the 10 1/2" or even the 3" uncompensated model that comes with the survival kit? I'm still trying to find a person who has shot one of those and lived.
What all do u have to buy to reload for 500 s&w & how much does equipment normally run???

should have bought the 5" 460 Mag. Better performance & more versatile. 500 bullets overpriced with less velocity
