lilo brancato gives one of the most powerfully understated speeches of all time. One cannot compare this version to Branagh's or Olivier's without doing injustice to the subtext and median involved. Where Branagh and Olivier sought to approximate a submersion into the late 16th century Renaissance, Brancato used a monotone to inspire. Note his use of eye motion behind his glasses and his Brooklyn accent as he rallied his comrades in much the same way as did Branagh.
@thejohnmithredux I totally agree with you. It is the only one that feels real. (besides a good reading of it of course). Branagh, are you kidding me? He is a total puss. This was a batlle cry speech that emboldened battle hardened men to face impossible odds! Branagh's interpretation of it couldn't motivate a teenage boy to mow the lawn.
@matthound 'Branagh's interpretation of it couldn't motivate a teenage boy to mow the lawn.' Whaaat? you're kidding right? This was ok and was refreshingly different, but Branagh's version makes me want to jump up and kill Frenchmen or anyone else for that matter.
@norcaldj Because 'band of brothers' is in the speech."We Few,we happy few,we band of brothers" Therefore, the title has nothing to do with the BOB miniseries.
I love this damn scene. Not just from this movie, but from any movie, it's ranking high on my list, and he's just reciting something from another work of art. It's the damn inflection of what it meant at this moment in the movie did it mean so much!!!! Hardcore. Devito rocks!!!!!
I am doing that Monologue for my audition of an all women production of Julius Caesar. I feel I can relate to it because of my civil air patrol squad and my paint ball team.
Basicly a man (played by Danny DeVito) looses his job and the one that he's giving is to teach comprehinchin (sp) to 8 "squeakers" kid's who can't hack it for one reason or another in basic training. What he ends up doing is teaching them Hamlet
the speech is one of the greatest speechs ever wrote my platoon leader quote this before goin out on every mission in iraq ud be suprised wat impact it haves when in a place like that when u hear shots in the distance
@PROCTOR1135 totally agree, I get so rapped up when I deliver this speech I get so much adrenalin running threw me, that I need to take a walk, and when I have a crowd around me that's involved, I have to run a mile. I LOOOOOOVE this speech
But this scene is one of the greatests ones ive seen.
I love the speech, the way he says it and especially i love the music on the background because it gives this scene a reallly good tone even though its not very loud
Double D, salute! There are very few movies with Danny Devito that I don't enjoy, but this is one for the underdog in all of us.
If you see this in the 5 dollar bin then buy two and give a copy to the next person you meet. Great cast, great movie - just a whole lot of wonderful moments from a true hidden gem.
What an amazing scene. I was just thinking about this scene and so I had to come look it up. I memorized the lines to this speech the first time I saw this movie, and I recite them to myself all the time. It's one of those feel good moments! I love this scene.
ARMY RAAAANNGERS C-130 rollin' down the strip 64 Rangers on a one-way trip Mission Top Secret, destination unknown They don't know if they're ever coming home When my plane gets up so high Airborne troopers gonna dance in the sky Stand up, hook up, shuffle to the door Jump right out and count to four If my main don't open wide I got a reserve by my side If that one should fail me too Look out ground, I'm a-coming through

why doesn't Branagh do it this well? randomly changing your rhythm and talking in a goofy voice makes his inferior.

Sad that this actor is in jail for the rest of his life. He clearly has an abundance of raw talent and emotional interpretation.
Why did he have to break in to a home and kill an off duty cop ?
MattFinstein 2 years ago
He's not in jail for the rest of his life, he only got ten years. He was found not guilty of 2nd degree murder, but guilty to attempted burglary.
asheradensein 2 years ago
So thats why i never heard from him again... I always thought he was good... Good enough to be seen in another film...
Damn, its a real pity...
And a real good question... Why break in and kill a cop???
Dubble damn....
