@creatornat The lady in this opera is called Yang Yuhuan (Gui Fei), one of the concubines of an Emperor, and she's also one of top 4 beauties in Chinese history. One day, she and the Emperor had a date for wine tasting in a garden of the palace. However the emperor didn't show up, but to spend time with another concubine. Yang felt hurt deeply and began drinking alone. In this video, she was drunk, and singing to the moon, wishing herself flying up there as Chang Er (a fairy living on moon).
It also can tell people a lot Chinese history which they can not learn from this language, but with only watch one or two videos, translated into their own languages, they all can give them the most intuitive and effective knowledge of that. :)
If only Beijing opera also can be translated into English, it will have more massive influence than all other operas. :) Cause a lot of smart people actually love it a lot, due to it has high voice and design quality, also can teach people Chinese martial art the basic forms, and can relax a lot with it, it is the best art entertainment. :)
That is also why I love Chang Er and her life on the moon.As an angle of Chinese legendary fairy tale--but we did not make so much movie for them though, this can effectively enhance the national image and self esteem too. :) Always be Me is the final way we can get our highest life style too. Do what we want and help we needed.:) Cause we also can not depend on anyone. :) Just love the name a lot. It is a truth in the world. :)
Chang Er means--always be Me. :) Our ancestor is so smart. :) And Wu Gang means --be strong. :) Hou Yi means---maybe we in the future need to have a wing on our back ? Need check dictionary what Yi means then, if this is not a fairy tale, I will be so pround he can shot 9 suns down to save his people. :)
i just cant even try to stop crynig on such a graceful singing and for most of all the opera i must please my soul for such delightfulness,.. said this i must presume to be one of the ones who love and truly understand the playfull carachters of the chinese opera
why do you say that? I've been watching Bando Tamasaburo's onnagata kabuki performances and you can tell when you look closely that he's a man but I'm not seeing that quality here. besides females can act in chinese opera, not sure when It got changed from men only but it's allowed now.
her eyes are very striking. I am not a fan on Peking Opera, and to be frank I don't much like this song, however her eyes drew me in and I had to watch.
Does anyone know the name or term for the high-pitched string(I'm assuming) instruments? I really like them, but most of the Chinese opera I've heard only uses cymbols/ drums. Just curious where I can find more like this.
Thank you for uploading this lovely piece! I love it! Somehow her unblinking eyes and unflinching smile strike me as being broken hearted and very sad. I featured your video on my website to teach children mandarin chinese. CastleofCostaMesadot
My guess is that she is a female. I may be wrong and stand corrected. it appears to be a modern trend for some talented women to go into these female roles against the convention that traditionally, these female roles were invariably played by males in Peking / Beijing opera.
A real rare talent. Her uniqueness is that she is able to make all those difficult stylized movements so natural and fluid that you don't even detect them as artificial movements. This takes a person's unique ability and talent that one is naturally endowed with and cannot be learned.
@joraejean traditionally its played by men only, because they moved around the whole country like gypsies so they had to live in harsh environment in which it would be very hard for women to endure so since they needed female roles the guys played it as well. now a days mostly they are played but actual women because they sound better
@phynixchen Thanks...She is very pretty. In Shakesphear's day, all the women rolls were played by men, because it was customary. They were also rnot respected, as we do respect actors today. Is she singing this song? Sometimes her lips move to the words, and in other areas, she doesn't seem to be singing at all, but you hear singing. Bend, Oregon.
She's so beautiful, such grace and poise.

Isn't she a he? With Chinese Opera, arn't all the players men? I assume the 'charter' is drunk...not the real actor.
