Note Paul and Simon were realistic about there background from the start,...
It's just a hypothesis, but what is fact, is that almost all of their lives unfold in a matter that consists of cashing in blow after blow, progressively losing the life out of their facial expressions, that become plastic. They are crushed by society and their adaptive priorities, caving in more and more while constantly rationalizing everything. Very high levels of denial are apparent in most of the participants, several of whom actually develop somatic problems and MANY of whom...
Well, after seeing it all from the start I must say the picture we are left with is bleak: I can only see 2 people in this entire doc that appear to have remained faithful to a core part of themselves: Simon and Paul. It seems ALL participants were traumatized from the start and one wonders wether they would in fact all be victims of sex-abuse. There must at least be a few, but what if it's ALL of them and what's more, that they were PRECISELY chosen for that purpose?
@suddenlyitsobvious. You're character judgement is so flawed it makes me think that you have suffered severe psychological or physical abuse yourself, especially as there is no foundation for your outlandish claims, which makes it understandable that you look for it in others in the hope of some kinship with other dysfunctional members of society.
I have been watching this series since 28up and it always brings me to tears at many points. I'm sorry that some of the participants find it difficult or are angry at Michael Apted. I wish it were not so. All I can really tell them (and him) is that the programs have enriched my life far more than any other "reality show" could ever do.
John, a complete snob, has always been extremely ignorant, arrogant and unchanging in his views yet he became a barrister passing judgement on others. He is the same as today's politicians most of who have been to public schools.
Suzy was a drop out but because of her privileged upbringing she still did well in her life.
WTF! I have watched all of the up series now and each time i get FREAKED OUT by that little s**t kicking little boys in Bruce's prep "school". He scares me and now i totally get why society is the way it is. What a charming person he would have turned out to be! Peace x
Much appreciated. They're due to appear again this year-Happy New Year-. I hope they all come through and are well. it's not easy this life business, is it?
@DazedConfused1969 I'd say that 28 is the maximum cut-off age. Things are just beginning to happen when you’re 21. You'll note in the film that all of the film’s participant's life trajectories seem locked-in before they reach 28; afterwards, they all plod along on their respective paths, brainlessly, until they hit middle age. Your 20’s is the ‘Fun’ time in your life; the 30’s are the ‘Serious Adult’ time; your 40’s is the ‘Where am I going?’ time in your life.
This every seven year look into the lives of these people may be difficult for them, but I hope they realize that it is a grand legacy they create. And, even though they may not realize it, their candid life stories help others going through life's challenges through the years. Hearing what they have to say, what they make of their lives and what they think important as they go through life's stages has certainly helped me put my life in perspective as I get older, too. Thank you!
@pjps27 Yes.I am saying he is a loser,or maybe he is a serial-killer and might be crazy...But the SHOW could do something about it .Wonder why the other two with money say absolutly nothing.Even does't want be on "the show"anymore. It is a FREAK-SHOW.If someone is like Neil or The other one.I don't know I remember about the BIG BROTHER Cancer Girl-Died in front everyone to do some money for the two sons...Maybe we are mental if we enjoy watch suffering while eating chocolate...Sorry I got a life!
Definitely about time more of them showed mature reflection about themselves and the world. Bruce, Nick, and especially Neil save the whole series really...a few of them may as well not be there (that means YOU Andrew, Suzie, Lynn, and Sue)!
@callendrellist I know what you mean, but isn't that more reflective of society that we have people that are dull in the series? When they were picked they all had interesting personalities , but as the series moved on, life in one way or another improved or removed that.
@pjps27 I agree with you that the degree of dullness is reflective of society and, don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting them to be doing cartwheels. But it would be so nice to see some of them talk enthusiastically, or regretfully, or...just animated in some real way. Or to mention if being an adult is what they expected, if they feel they have changed much since 21 up, what they think of the youth of today, what advice they would give to their younger self etc. But I still the doco is great!
Jackie on the other hand should just stop - if she hates it so much and doesn't think it's worthwhile then she should just say 'enough'. Ever since 14 Up onwards she has shown more than any other character a refusal to 'own' any of her regrets or disappointments - she seems to feel it would signify failure and blame on her part, which really isn't necessarily the case. Something happened between 7 and 14 to make the original charming bubbly kid disappear - the personality shift was startling.
I find this whole series fascinating even though most of them are horribly guarded and boring - it becomes a case of spotting what is absent from what they say rather than what is present. However, I still hope that by 56 Up some of them (Andrew, Suzie, Sue, Lynn) will loosen up and actually say something worthwhile.
I LOVE Simon and Paul ha these 2 guys are definitely my favourites from the series, so glad they met up.
John makes David Cameron sound like Ali G!
My order from the 12:
1) Simon, 2)Paul, 3)Nick, 4)Neil
5) Paul, 6) Bruce, 7) Jackie, 8) Andrew
9) Sue, 10) Suzie, 11) John, 12) Lynn
p.s reason Peter hasn't been in it since 28up is because he lost his teaching job following a press campaign against him after he criticised Thatcher in his interview. ROT IN HELL WHEN IT COMES BITCH!
@goombabear Not schizophrenia, but definitely one of the other co-morbids of the Cluster A Personality Disorders group. I'm thinking Schizoaffective, or Schizoid Personality Disorder. Onset is late adolescence/early adulthood, as is depicted in the film; he presents like a normal child at age seven, then you notice a shift at 14. At 21, he's clearly off the rails, and at 28 he's well past the point of no return. He's had a tragically difficult life as a consequence.
