  • Seven Marines have just recently died in a tragic helicopter accident. Let this symbolic image fill our hearts with inspiraton and admiration for these honorable Marines. These individuals died serving their country. Today is the 67th year anniversery of this event so remember all the Marines that have fought and bled so that this fine country can thrive. Semper fi.

  • Not bad. I love it. But we also must remember the first flag raising. For those Marines also sacrificed just as much as these, which partook of this staged flag raising. Good history. Good post AZODUDE! Thank you.

  • What's sad is 3 of those flag raisers (sgt. Mike strank, harlon, and frank sousely) were killed before the battle ended

  • The reason why Joe Rosenthal's photos reached the States first is because Joe Rosenthal was an A.P.(Associated Press) photographer and Lou Lowery was a military photographer and A.P. photos travel faster than military photos.

  • It's "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," Not "Eternal Father Strong to Thee"....what the hell does "strong to thee" even supposed to mean??

  • funny thing, the photo was taken by complete accident. and the roll of film with the famous photo on it was ruined except for that picture.

  • I always felt bad for Ira Hayes (the one in the back/left) cause he never really got to touch the flag. Just reached for it

  • @Guercinator actually ira hayes touched it before they lifted it up...0:10
