Chris this made me cry.. you have such a pain inside you that may never fully be healed... but I pray that someday you will overcome all that pain and all those sad experiences and be free!
oh, my gosh, baby, I went to you tube. searched emma lou harris.( I heard and loved her on the classic country station the other day) and the video you made popped up. I didn't realize it was one of your creations 'till I read some of the comments and saw caw102496. YOu are so talented and full of depth. I am so lucky to be able to call you my man.
I had this song played at my bestfriend's funeral. He was the most fun, caring and loving friend. I really really miss him. R.I.P Edward Paul Benjamin Semigak. Thinking of you every day.
Those of us who have lived this kind of bittersweat heartbreak, know there is no envy in it. It is hell & pain. No honor in it. It breaks the soul, eats you up. Pray you never experience it.
The Song penned by a great songwriter at his best and performed by one of the best writer/interpreters at her best. The grainy video on this effort is a nice touch, taking this viewer at least into the pain at the heart of the song and the singer. The needle is so, so poignant.
And Steve's last name is Earle, with trailing "e". At first the jitters were slightly irritating, but once this version of the song gets to you those jitters mesh with the jitteriness of the song itself ... there is almost always something making a beat. Now I like the jitters.
It's a Steve Earle song, Harris just sang it. She also sang Poncho and Lefty which was a Townes Van Zandt song, but she also acts like she should get credit in "Heartworn Highways."
I know that Steve Earle wrote it. He sings it great; does a very nice duet with Rosanne Cash. I have always appreciated Emmylou as a singer. She provides perfect interpretation of lots of great songwriters. Steve Earle, Townes, Rodney Crowell, John Prine, Lucinda Williams, Daniel Lanois and of course, Gram Parsons, all wrote amazing songs that she sang amazing versions of. And she has written some great songs, too!
I've been trying to find a copy of "Heartworn Highways" for a while.

Great song straight from the suffering heart.
Elsewhere Steve Earle describes writing it first thing after getting out of jail, where he was not allowed a guitar.

I never saw a wild thing,
sorry for itself.
Small bird will drop frozen death from a booth
without ever having felt sorry
for itself.
Have u ever saw the great movie called G.I. Jane, that is concluded by this nice song (thank u very much for it here)?
This quote comes from that excellent film.

Very poignant song. Daniel Lanois was the producer; he's produced some U2 albums too.

Larry Mullen Jr. is on this album too. Speaking of U2. He does a great job too.
