  • Lore has it that he changed the verse at the end in response a request from the record label. Supposedly, in the original version, they both drowned.

  • Great Song. Not depressing since he saves his girlfriend. I love it the first time I heard it on the radio in 1958.

  • A sped up clip of this was in the intro to John Water's Multiple Maniacs.

  • The title of the song, "Endless Sleep," is a euphemism for death.

  • Guess you had to be young when it was on the charts. Haven't heard it in over 50 years.

  • This is a great Halloween song. Still remember Stephen King quoting it in

    Salem's Lot...creepy ...It's right up there with Don't fear the Reaper.

  • @sibjoan Yes. The song actually has a happy ending (in 1958, suicide was a taboo subject).

  • I think Marty Wilde's cover version is better.
