What a stupid notion! The little squirrel-powered motor in these things was barely adequate to move it's own mass - Bugs weren't designed to tow anything like this. There actually was a "camper" designed to be mounted on a Beetle, but it was a tent type you had to close down while driving
Just google pictures for "Isetta Wohnwagen", "Goggo Wohnwagen", "Dübener EI Krause" to see what has been around for 70 years and is used by enthusiasts, even crosses the Alps (!), pulling campers with 12-25 HP vehicles.
I think this central hitch design has a lot of advantages, creates efficient camper shapes, as long as the hitch attachment is correctly done and stable.
I LOVE this concept and will wait for its re-invention - anyone?

You seem not know a lot about cars or campers:

that is one really good idea, wonder why it never caught on? (not in UK anyway, never seen one)
better use of space than a conventional caravan, was there just too much red tape to contend with before it was road-legal?
