I've had situations where I've stunned players with the stab, but it's at an angle where they aren't hit by pulling the arrow back.

yep. if your target gets the first hit but is out of range from the second hit then you won't get a kill. so the second hit is the real damage dealer and insta kills everything exept overhealed heavies I believe.
