I can't stand listening to these biased commentators. First of all, he didn't "spike" it behind his head, he threw the ball 40 feet up in the air. Second, it wasn't like BYU barely got a hand on it, the kicker was swallowed up so fast, it wouldn't have mattered where he kicked it from. And 3rd, Washington still had to beat BYU in OT, which they had maybe a 40 percent chance of winning at best.
@bartsthoughts shutup, if you werent a BYU fan you wouldnt be arguing it was a good call. I know your response now will be "Im not a BYU fan" Bullfucking shit. Nobody agrees with you unless your a BYU fan. I agree with the third point, they still had to win in overtime. But at least they would have let the players decide the game
@glessnerdawg12 You are right, I am a BYU fan. Why else would I be watching a replay of this completely insignificant game against a team that didn't win a single game that season? Why don't you try arguing my points instead of trying to undercut my credibility simply because I happen to be a BYU fan. Plus, your boy Jake had his chance to beat BYU again last year, but lost to BYU's worst team in years who was starting a freshman QB that chose BYU rather than UW, the team he grew up cheering for.
Try "and won the game" instead of "to win". The extra point attempt, which had to come from a long distance because of the penalty, would have tied the game if it was good.
Unsportsmanlike Conduct should be a five-yard penalty. The reason being is because it is not cheating or gaining an unfair advantage over the other team, and nor does it pose a risk of severe bodily harm like all other 15-yard penalties do, such as a facemask, roughing the passer, late hit. But why Unsportsmanlike Conduct? Why should that be a penalty anyway? With ESPN and the media, College Football is more like an episode of Jersey Shore, with players showboating for ratings
okay, the first time i saw it (on tv), i thought he had just tossed it over his head, but now that i see it again it, man, he flung it really high in the air (like how you would get a penalty for flinging it into the crowd).. but the commentator described it as "getting it out of his hands because he was eager to celebrate" (maybe he say it the way i thought i saw it). It seems that the commentator is a husky fan... i would say its a good call, though. And he's pretty convincing, just ask them V

@RockSmithStudio The farther the kick, the lower you have to kick the ball. On an extra point, most kickers kick it higher, so it probably would not be blocked. also the defense does not try as hard to block kicks when its only and extra point.

first of all, unsportsmanlike conduct is a stupid penalty, but all teams have to deal with it, and i'd say yeah, the ball throwing up in the air could be qualified as that. so sure thats stupid though, but then just make your 35 yard field goal, thats a chip shot. get the ball up in the air you idiot kicker. plus yeah, it got blocked, thats a good defensive play. so overall, yeah it was a stupid call, but washington mentally collapsed after it and couldnt make a chip shot field goal
To start off it was the right call. Locker threw the ball up in the air right after the touchdown and that would make it a penalty. On ESPN that same day it showed the rules for celebrattion and one stated "ball thrown in air" and thats what Locker did, so that means right call. IF you still don't agree guess what BYU still blocked the field goal!!! Its not like the field goal was too short it was BLOCKED!!! The penalty changes nothing!!
@360gamestrategies22 you know nothing - it is not about the distance it is about the trajectory, a chip shot is different than an actual distance field goal attempt in which you must drive the ball through the uprights, the call changed the momentum of the game, not just the ball position. Referees should never decide the game, no matter what - and they decided this game. Rules are rules, but Locker's "ball toss" did not affect the game, the refs directly did.
This call is such garbage. when it comes to penalties such as excessive celebration some refs just don't know how to let the players play. What do you expect the players to do after they score a TD with 2 seconds left in the 4th quarter to potentially tie up the game? Calls like this just discourage any excitement in a game.
This was the correct call and the NCAA wanted this called. Plain and simple. This is why players and coaches must know the rules. No different than if you spike the football and you do not see players in college and high school spiking the ball. LEARN THE DARN RULES AND YOU WILL NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT WHAT IS CALLED!!!!
It would not have mattered. UW fans KNOW it. BYU is maybe the best team in the country when it comes to blocking kicks. it is not like he missed it, it is that BYU blocked it.
fact of the matter is...NEVER do something to give the refs a remote chance of throwing a flag at. He should of been humble cause the game was not over yet and sat down at his bench and hoped they make the field goal. People say the refs fault, I say it was Jakes.
This is why the excessive celebration penalty needs to be abolished. 15 yds for a Personal foul? okay. 15 yds for tossing the ball into the air? you gotta be shittin' me!
At the time this loss devastated me.....but now thinking about it this might have been for the best just because the season spiraled so out of control TY was FINALLY forced out. We'll beat their ass next year
Sports pundits do what is needed to get attention, like Mel Kiper and Todd Mcshay.
If he just threw it over his shoulder, i would be outraged as well. it left the view OF THE CAMERA. If this is not unsportsmanlike conduct, what is? Rules are rules. If you can't take the heat, don't break them
"After scoring the touchdown, the player threw the ball into the air and we are required, by rule, to assess a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. It is a celebration rule that we are required to call. It was not a judgment call."
That ball was thrown over 15 feet into the air. If that is not unsportmanlike conduct, then what is?
@siegris2 Locker never showed up on BYU, I don't care if the ball was up 1000 feet into the air. And starting this fall, if Locker does the same thing, the touchdown's off the board. Horrible call by the NCAA.
@zymaymyn he showed up on them. It just was not direct. doing a cartwheel intto the endzone and doing a flip into the endzone is also showing up. Things don't have to be direct.
The NCAA is doing the best it can. Remember the Miami-FIU fight? That was caused by unsportmanlike conduct, without FIU being showed up
the refs are lucky that Locker didnt eat their souls for nourishment. Im a huge Locker fan, he going number one in 2011 draft, all that aside how dare they call that. 18 play drive and you blasted and danced your way their tuns of guys waiting to blow you up and you score and they call that. BOOOO.
well, i think the call was a little iffy, but not as much as the commentator made it seem. obviously (probably) he was rooting for washington (im a fan of both teams). i was watching this game live, and i didnt think it was a horrible call but that toss over the shoulder maybe shouldve been overlooked. regardless, he didnt even get the extra point past the LOS, so none of it matters. And reading all the comments, people make it seem like it was BYU's fault that the call was made.
Terrible call. This is a classic example of over regulating the game. Come on. A 20-year old kid just scored with 2 seconds left after 18 plays and gets called for this?
These refs were idiots - like most of the PAC10 refs. Probably the same morons who gave Oregon 5 downs to beat Oklahoma.
I still stick by what I said 3 months ago. It's a complete BS call. Personally I'd have flagged it then admitted I was wrong and given the 15yds back, I wouldn't care if the NCAA disciplined me in that instance, it's the right thing to do.
At the end of it all it's a judgement call. Sports rules are never black and white (despite what some sports authorities think. NASCAR, NCAA, NFL, UEFA), and every call is subjective.
throwing the ball up in the air after a touchdown is a penalty in any college football game. Why should they not throw the flag late in the game. If UW hit the weight room a little bit and learned to block properly, it wouldnt come back to haunt them.
These announcers should be fired. It is known that you can't throw the ball after scoring a TD in college football and that was exactly what the kid did. Why these idiots are announcing a game without knowledge of the rules is beyond me. This is what happens when you let homer fans announce games.
if UW's line wouldnt of collapsed and let BYU BLOCK the PAT, then no one would give a damn about the call, so shut up whinny huskies, ill see you LES come this fall 2010
So, UW is down to BYU by three points and lines up to kick a 35 yard FG with two seconds and it gets blocked. We would say UW lost to BYU, period. What is the difference?
FWIW: I was rooting like HELL in this game for BYU so we would be ridded of LTW.
UW is going to kick the hell out of Mormon State University BIG in Sept, with a BYU guy Sark leading UW.
@idahobuckeye i want some actual proof that religion would make the refs favor byu especially if its pac 10 refs. if anything it would be the refs giving bad calls to byu for their religion
Dude, you totally did not get the context of my comment (which is fine because context apparently has no meaning on YouTube or the Internet). What I mean by "religion always plays a role where BYU is concerned" is that it kind of affects their little superiority complex and the REALLY fucking annoying "Us against the World" mentality. I said nothing about referees.
That rule is absolute garbage. It came from the 90's era of ND, UM, etc. and the fear of a fight if one team got in the other's face. As a Vandy fan, I got to see the same bullshit result when we played at Florida. Cutler throws a TD to Bennett to complete a huge comeback in the Swamp. VU is gonna go for two and the win but has to kick long extra point instead. We ran out of gas and lost in the 2nd OT. Complete horseshit.
they should be able to celebrate they are in ages between 18-24 they arent little kids the opposing team wont cry and give up if they see a celebration
So if instead of scoreing a touchdown and celebrating, would he have been given a penalty if a close family member had died if he started crying? Common sense...something good happens you enjoy it. These kids work there entire lives for moments like that and one bad call takes it away from them.
Did anyone see Oneal Chambers throw the ball up into the air against Air Force last week EXACTLY how Locker did during this play? I just thought it was funny to see the cougs not get it called on... Must be livin right
As a BYU fan, I definitely have mixed feelings about this call. You never want to win a game like this. BYU blocked many field goals this season, so who knows what would have happened without the call. Any good field goal kicker would not have had to change trajectory at all from 15 more yards back for a PAT. But what pisses me off is the commentators who wouldn't admit Locker broke a rule that, according to the book, warranted a penalty.
Exactly, they are basically teenagers in transition. Who actually CARES if they spike the ball when they score a TD? I can understand bashing the other teams, but to me anything below that is fair game as a celebration.
Look at the CFL, they have organised, team celebrations, players celebrating with fans, to me that should be a part of the game
Yeah he did, son. He break a rule that is in the rulebook. Should it have been called? No. But he broke a rule. FSN got a lot of crap for how they commentated that whole situation because they, like you, are ignorant of the fact that a rule was actually broken.
What, exactly, is the wording of the rule? Do you own a copy of the "rulebook?" The rule regarding excessive celebration says you cannot do anything choreographed or directed at the opposing team, sideline or fans. None of which applied here. If you had to throw a flag, I might accept it for delay of game by spiking the ball but the call was "excessive celebration." It's the wrong call and even you must see that.
NCAA Rule 9-2, Article 1(a)(2), which asserts that "after a score or any other play, the player in possession immediately must return the ball to an official or leave it near the dead-ball spot," paragraph (c) of which expressly forbids "throwing the ball high into the air." Listen kid, do your research before you make yourself look like a fool because he did, in fact, break a rule that is explicitely mentioned in the rulebook. Can you read? Because if you can then even you must see that.
You're an idiot. NCAA Rule 9-2, Article 1(a)(2), which asserts that "after a score or any other play, the player in possession immediately must return the ball to an official or leave it near the dead-ball spot," paragraph (c) of which expressly forbids "throwing the ball high into the air."
That's the same argument I made. I said if there must be a flag thrown it would be for spiking the ball, thus delaying the game. The ref, however, said it was for "excessive celebration.' These are two completely different violations. If he had said "delay of game" the announcers and everyone else watching the game wouldn't have been so critical of the officials. Please read an comment entirely before reacting to it.
delagolf come on now, you know what I meant, don't pretend otherwise.
You make your own breaks and kudos for LSU in doing that, but for the refs to play that big of a factor into the game with two bogus celebration penalties is pretty embarassing.
Absolutely disgraceful way to have such a large hand in a football game.
I'm a big LSU fan and am glad they beat Georgia last week, but the bogus celebraiton penalty after Georgia's TD played a large hand in helping LSU win.
It's a shame this game got decdided like this, it's a shame that the LSU-Georgia game got decided in a similar way even though I'm and LSU fan and they won.
Yea, as an LSU fan it's a shame that Trindon returned it 50 yards on the return and it's a shame Charles Scott broke a delayed handoff 40 yards for the score and UGA couldn't tackle him. it's all just a shame
why do you washington fans care your team sucks anyways that game wouldnt have changed anything, if your kicker was any good he would have kicked it higher
ha so what does it say about you guys, you guys suck FBS dick ad al you BYU fans are trying to talk shit when washington and ucla are bullshit teams, play oregon or usc and see how that works out for you.

This was the correct call and the NCAA wanted this called. Plain and simple. This is why players and coaches must know the rules. No different than if you spike the football and you do not see players in college and high school spiking the ball. LEARN THE DARN RULES AND YOU WILL NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT WHAT IS CALLED!!!!

fact of the matter is...NEVER do something to give the refs a remote chance of throwing a flag at. He should of been humble cause the game was not over yet and sat down at his bench and hoped they make the field goal. People say the refs fault, I say it was Jakes.

If that is not unsportmanlike conduct, then what is?
siegris2 1 year ago
@siegris2 Locker never showed up on BYU, I don't care if the ball was up 1000 feet into the air. And starting this fall, if Locker does the same thing, the touchdown's off the board. Horrible call by the NCAA.
zymaymyn 1 year ago
@zymaymyn he showed up on them. It just was not direct. doing a cartwheel intto the endzone and doing a flip into the endzone is also showing up. Things don't have to be direct.
The NCAA is doing the best it can. Remember the Miami-FIU fight? That was caused by unsportmanlike conduct, without FIU being showed up
siegris2 1 year ago
the refs are lucky that Locker didnt eat their souls for nourishment. Im a huge Locker fan, he going number one in 2011 draft, all that aside how dare they call that. 18 play drive and you blasted and danced your way their tuns of guys waiting to blow you up and you score and they call that. BOOOO.

LordJudgement1818 1 year ago
well, i think the call was a little iffy, but not as much as the commentator made it seem. obviously (probably) he was rooting for washington (im a fan of both teams). i was watching this game live, and i didnt think it was a horrible call but that toss over the shoulder maybe shouldve been overlooked. regardless, he didnt even get the extra point past the LOS, so none of it matters. And reading all the comments, people make it seem like it was BYU's fault that the call was made.
FosterFuel 1 year ago
Terrible call. This is a classic example of over regulating the game. Come on. A 20-year old kid just scored with 2 seconds left after 18 plays and gets called for this?
These refs were idiots - like most of the PAC10 refs. Probably the same morons who gave Oregon 5 downs to beat Oklahoma.

Consider the fact that the unsportsman like call took a huge hit to the team's morale.
Who knows, this game could have went to OT.
DragonofFate 1 year ago
I still stick by what I said 3 months ago. It's a complete BS call. Personally I'd have flagged it then admitted I was wrong and given the 15yds back, I wouldn't care if the NCAA disciplined me in that instance, it's the right thing to do.
At the end of it all it's a judgement call. Sports rules are never black and white (despite what some sports authorities think. NASCAR, NCAA, NFL, UEFA), and every call is subjective.
DieKolkrabe 1 year ago
Bullshit call. What happens when you have sixty year old farts running college football.
AUgrad00 1 year ago
throwing the ball up in the air after a touchdown is a penalty in any college football game. Why should they not throw the flag late in the game. If UW hit the weight room a little bit and learned to block properly, it wouldnt come back to haunt them.

yeah your coach was our quarterback back in college days!!! sarkisian ehh!! welcome back man!!! BYU!!!!
sugarbooger111 2 years ago
These announcers should be fired. It is known that you can't throw the ball after scoring a TD in college football and that was exactly what the kid did. Why these idiots are announcing a game without knowledge of the rules is beyond me. This is what happens when you let homer fans announce games.

Religion plays a key role when BYU is concerned.
idahobuckeye 1 year ago
@idahobuckeye i want some actual proof that religion would make the refs favor byu especially if its pac 10 refs. if anything it would be the refs giving bad calls to byu for their religion
PAXhasBYUpride 1 year ago
@PAXhasBYUpride
I said nothing about referees.
idahobuckeye 1 year ago
Worst call ever. PERIOD.
remthem7 2 years ago
That rule is absolute garbage. It came from the 90's era of ND, UM, etc. and the fear of a fight if one team got in the other's face. As a Vandy fan, I got to see the same bullshit result when we played at Florida. Cutler throws a TD to Bennett to complete a huge comeback in the Swamp. VU is gonna go for two and the win but has to kick long extra point instead. We ran out of gas and lost in the 2nd OT. Complete horseshit.
mattwilker 2 years ago
they should be able to celebrate they are in ages between 18-24 they arent little kids the opposing team wont cry and give up if they see a celebration
aaronemilio1215 2 years ago
So if instead of scoreing a touchdown and celebrating, would he have been given a penalty if a close family member had died if he started crying? Common sense...something good happens you enjoy it. These kids work there entire lives for moments like that and one bad call takes it away from them.

vancouvercanucksuck 2 years ago
As a BYU fan, I definitely have mixed feelings about this call. You never want to win a game like this. BYU blocked many field goals this season, so who knows what would have happened without the call. Any good field goal kicker would not have had to change trajectory at all from 15 more yards back for a PAT. But what pisses me off is the commentators who wouldn't admit Locker broke a rule that, according to the book, warranted a penalty.
austinsc 2 years ago
I also have mixed feelings (WSU here), I feel the excessive celebration rule is not needed
DieKolkrabe 2 years ago
Agreed. At the end of the day, this is a no call. College football players should be allowed to enjoy their big plays.
austinsc 2 years ago
Exactly, they are basically teenagers in transition. Who actually CARES if they spike the ball when they score a TD? I can understand bashing the other teams, but to me anything below that is fair game as a celebration.
Look at the CFL, they have organised, team celebrations, players celebrating with fans, to me that should be a part of the game

dude are you fucking kidding me? he didn't do jack shit that was a terrible call
giant37 2 years ago
Yeah he did, son. He break a rule that is in the rulebook. Should it have been called? No. But he broke a rule. FSN got a lot of crap for how they commentated that whole situation because they, like you, are ignorant of the fact that a rule was actually broken.
austinsc 2 years ago
What, exactly, is the wording of the rule? Do you own a copy of the "rulebook?" The rule regarding excessive celebration says you cannot do anything choreographed or directed at the opposing team, sideline or fans. None of which applied here. If you had to throw a flag, I might accept it for delay of game by spiking the ball but the call was "excessive celebration." It's the wrong call and even you must see that.
mattwilker 2 years ago
NCAA Rule 9-2, Article 1(a)(2), which asserts that "after a score or any other play, the player in possession immediately must return the ball to an official or leave it near the dead-ball spot," paragraph (c) of which expressly forbids "throwing the ball high into the air." Listen kid, do your research before you make yourself look like a fool because he did, in fact, break a rule that is explicitely mentioned in the rulebook. Can you read? Because if you can then even you must see that.
austinsc 2 years ago
You're an idiot. NCAA Rule 9-2, Article 1(a)(2), which asserts that "after a score or any other play, the player in possession immediately must return the ball to an official or leave it near the dead-ball spot," paragraph (c) of which expressly forbids "throwing the ball high into the air."
austinsc 2 years ago
That's the same argument I made. I said if there must be a flag thrown it would be for spiking the ball, thus delaying the game. The ref, however, said it was for "excessive celebration.' These are two completely different violations. If he had said "delay of game" the announcers and everyone else watching the game wouldn't have been so critical of the officials. Please read an comment entirely before reacting to it.

You make your own breaks and kudos for LSU in doing that, but for the refs to play that big of a factor into the game with two bogus celebration penalties is pretty embarassing.
BigEasyWinger 2 years ago
Absolutely disgraceful way to have such a large hand in a football game.
I'm a big LSU fan and am glad they beat Georgia last week, but the bogus celebraiton penalty after Georgia's TD played a large hand in helping LSU win.
It's a shame this game got decdided like this, it's a shame that the LSU-Georgia game got decided in a similar way even though I'm and LSU fan and they won.
BigEasyWinger 2 years ago
Yea, as an LSU fan it's a shame that Trindon returned it 50 yards on the return and it's a shame Charles Scott broke a delayed handoff 40 yards for the score and UGA couldn't tackle him. it's all just a shame
