@Birkenzwillies Hello. This Bokken has quite a thin blade and as such in not designed for blade on blade contact (as in two person kata) however it is a good starting point for solo Iaido practice. That said, Plastic moulded Saya are available to fit most standard Bokken and obviously a standard Bokken has the advantage of being stronger and heavier.

I make my own saya bokuto, and have found that woods like purpleheart and vera wood provide the weight and durability needed for bokken on bokken contact.

I can't say that I have ever handled a Bokuto/Bokken made from Vera wood, but I have used a Purpleheart Bokuto in the past. Unfortunately as you well know such high quality timber is not cheap to come by. A good (albeit rather lightweight) alternative is using laminated strips of Bamboo. Perhaps a good quality hardwood Mune with Shinogi and ha made from bamboo would reduce costs and bear up to contact better? what do you think?

PROS: The Wooden Saya for this style of bokken feels far more authentic than the plastic saya, largely because the proportions of this Bokken are far closer to that of an actual katana, but also because the Koiguchi has some thickness to it, whereas the plastic Saya are more like a shaped tube with a much thinner edge.

CONS: The blade is thin and not suitable for bokken on bokken contact. The Saya is also thin and without the lacquer of a true saya is also susceptible to contact damage.
