when i started with guitar i wanted to be like hendrix and frusciante and now this kind of playing is second nature to me.

i can also grab chords with thumb behind the neck but when i play solo, thumb over the neck is much more comfortable for me :P

@JF4ever if i were him i would not change the thumb position. it really helps a lot, you can strum all the strings really hard and only hear what you want. really good skill to have, better if you are a begginer

I strongly disagree as would most guitarist. It's fine here and there but pressing hard on strings and having your thumb constantly over the neck can cause injury, less flexibility and keep you slow, and un-uniformed . pressing hard on strings causes notes to go sharp. I'm not knocking him I'm stating a fact. Better discipline now means you don't have to fix things later...passion plus technique means being able to play anyway you want without any mysteries

i dont think so. even john frusciante said that using the thumb is a better technique and that is better to strum all the strings at once instead of picking all you want.

it does not cause injury, it hurts more when you have all your fingers on the fretboard and your thumb on the back supporting all your hand

and it makes hammers and pull offs easier therefore you play faster. jimi hendrix used this too

John is actually one of the most sloppiest guitarists out there...Look I know you want to defend the techniques of your heroes, but my point is more than valid. If you are referring to the pain in your thumb that's something you get as beginner developing that muscle, but it won't lead to carpal tunnel if you rest inbetween. Listen if you want to get arguing this point we can do it on our youtube pages, not flood his vid with this...

i think that 3 years without it was great and im glad that sometime im able improvise something which sound good to me without knowing music theory.

i tried to learn it by myself, but it is hard. i think i was to lazy.

i dont spare to much time on typical exercises. i just try to have fun and i didn;t need it to enjoy playing guitar.

but now i feel i need to know all those scales, chord and notes. :P
