  • My sister breastfed her kids until 4 yrs old, my daughter still breast feeds my grandson at 2 yrs old. Here is my problem with it. If they can chew food, have a full set of teeth, and can ask for a happy meal... They are too old to breast feed. You (and many others) state how other countries do it, how Vikings, etc., did it, but they did not have the available food that we have. That's why it was necessary. Like I told my sister, when right after breast feeding her 4 yr old, she asked for a Hap

  • No, I must have seen you around before.. I just didn't realize it was Sonia, or something? I've been in a timewarp bubble raising my 5 kids. I was waiting for this particular winter to roll around to actually give more time to online activism. (I think we skipped fall and went straight for winter!) So here I am again, and what I've learned is that the most powerful tool I have yet found to preserve breastfeeding is peer to peer support, actually leading by example, as you are doing.

  • Seriously, I've been begging women for the past several years through my video Breastfeeding: Mother to Mother to do exactly EXACTLY what you have done! I can't believe it took me this long to notice what you are doing here, though. Totally, my hat is off to you!

  • Wow, this is one awesome mission you are on! It's almost like you watched one of my rants about breastfeeding moms and babies getting the second class citizen treatment. Mom's need the attitude of Rosa Parks and actually make the effort to breastfeed normally in public, just being who they are.

Why allow it in public? Because babies can't wait for shopping trips. It's cruel and unhealthy to impose hunger on a baby and wrong to shut women away from society. We are humans, too.

  • cool lisp

  • wtf does death and starvation have to do with a kid sucking on your tit

  • the real reason she breastfeeds on youtube is up for debate but fact is the majority of the views she gets is from young horny boys who are masterbating to her bare titties. and i bet shes just keeps breastfeeding cause she enjoys it and gives a bunch of bs reasons to justify her using her baby fir her pleasure

  • That's all fine and dandy but take a look at the statistics on who is watching these breastfeeding videos....men. Men who are obviously getting some sexual pleasure from it...definitely not what you intended right.

  • Plus you get some sick ratings for breast feeding vids ;)

  • your so right on! people are being programed. I don't know what normal is ! people are being less valued :(

  • right on!!!

  • Right on !!! I so agree! hence the reason I dont own a tv too much negativity and things I dont want to look at but I am in the know via the internet !!!

  • Right on !!! I so agree! hence the reason I dont own a tv too much negativity and things I dont want to look at but I am in the know via the internet

  • So, if you see me jerking off in public, should I expect you to be okay with it because it's perfectly natural?? Is it okay if I go take a piss next to your table while you're out eating? Seriously, there really isn't anything wrong with breast feeding. But a "36 month old" child? Really? The kid is perfectly capable of eating normal food. I just really don't see the point of doing that. Infant? Okay. Toddler? Not so much. Where do you draw the line?

  • ok so breast pump that shit..bc you and all ya friends babies are to damn old to be sucking titties!

  • short answer:she's a religious fanatic who doesnt mind showing her tits on youtube.....sounds good 2 me

  • much respect you

  • I particularly enjoy the circumference of the areola. Much like the mender a woman's breasts are meant to be suckled.

  • I agree with the breastfeeding part, but don't care about the king part, breastfeeding is a great and natural thing, heck thats why women have boobs.. keep up the videos I like your way of thinking..

  • love what you said. I breastfeed in public all the time. it's my stance on helping to change the status quo.

  • Very well said!

I hope that these norms may progressively change as people's attitudes become more accepting - it's certainly best for the children

  • Thanks for this video! I am the opposite of this 'norm' you speak of. I hate formula, and it kills me inside when I see mothers feeding their babies that way! Especially newborns, it's so upsetting. I wish breastfeeding was not a 'choice' but the only way. I might go as far as to say that formula should require a prescription :P

Can you explain the 'milk teeth' a bit more?

  • I completely agree with you. Breastfeeding is such a taboo subject in our culture. Where it's considered fine and normal to show children half naked girls dancing around and acting like a slut but heaven forbid our children or anyone for that matter see a woman breast feeding in public or on t.v. People really need to take a step back and see what is really the issue and where we are actually putting our judgement and criticisms.

  • I love your videos!!!

  • There was an episode of desperate housewive where a co worker of one of the main characters was breast feedingi think th kid was 3 and the story line was the housewife trying to trick the coworkers child off the breast with treats because she felt it was gross. so there is the media making it seem disgusting and funny to breasfeed. its awful and needs to stop. I love that my 4 year old holds her dolls to her chest and has no toy bottles. i love your videos sonia

  • @jeniknf I remember doing this as a child too. I learnt it from watching my aunt do it to her daughter and other people i knew and I thought it was neat. There is nothing wrong with breast feeding and people seriously need to stop freaking out about something that is so natural and good for the child.

  • because you are bitch )))))))))))))))))

  • i learned all this shit last year in 6th grade dammit

  • Thanks so much for sharing. Only if we could see more functioning breasts on TV, as opposed to the decorative ones.

  • No, right on. I love her explanation. This answers my question. I cant stop watching these videos for many reasons, but I now know how to breastfeed and I am sold. I think this woman is right when she talks about how many horrible things we see but not something as natural as breastfeeding. Good for you!

  • I know breastfeeding is a natural and beautiful think, but unfortunately some sick perverted men out there use Youtube's breastfeeding videos as pornography. I hate that women innocently trying to educate others about breastfeeding are being seen like that and it disgusts me that things are that way. That is why I don't think breastfeeding videos should be posted on Youtube... because they are misunderstood and viewed inappropriately by too many people.

  • Those men could get off on anything. It doesn't mean these videos shouldn't be posted. Its not the object of the video, its just what some idiotic people choose to use it for.

Those men have nothing to do with these women.

  • I love what your doing I wish there where more educated ppl out there like you. I live in a small town and all my family was against me nursing my son, but I've always been into what is natural and best for my baby so I did it anyway. I'm currently pregnant and plan on nursing this baby also. I also like that you teach your kids baby signs I thought that was neat I also taught my son baby signs and he's is very advanced for his age even tho he was a preemie and behind at first.

  • Why are people so offended by a baby eating. I think it's more disgusting to see someone eat with their mouth open than watching a breastfeeding baby. There are worse things on YouTube that people can fight to take off than this. If you don't want to see it, go look at something else. Maybe I'll implore YouTube to ban videos made by ingorant people against breastfeeding mothers. I don't like see those, they offend me. Yeah, that's what I'll do. I guess some people don't mind being ignorant.

  • You tube is considering removing breast feeding videos. Thats good

  • Thank you!

  • THANKS for SHARING!!!!! I am a breastfeeding mom. I breastfed all four of my children from birth to 2-3 years old. Thank you

  • @loverven

    Gross.

  • it might be best to start psychoanalyzing yourself and why you felt the need to pick apart someone else for doing what is only natural... just a suggestion- or you could stop typing bullsh*t

  • bubbaj420 must have a master's, maybe even a doctorate, in psychology! what a thorough profile bubbaj420! now let me try: bubbaj, so you're a redneck/hillbilly; 420, who smokes pot (about right?)wow! you are so superior to the well-educated, well-spoken mother who is doing what is best for her child and trying to educate other mothers

  • (Pt 2) SOOO.. Mom w/ college degree, who doesn't work feels that her life is meaningless, and thus tries to keep the 1 person in her life who sees her role as important (her baby) as close as she can for as long as she can by breastfeeding until kid goes to college. HA! I should be a CSI!

  • (Part 1)Ok, I get u now. You repeatedly speak of social norms, which would lead me to believe uve taken a sociology class, and thus have persued some degree of higher learning. However, you are at home breastfeeding in the middle of the day, which indicates u don't work.

  • I would like to know how men should act around women who are breastfeeding in public or in his presence. I usually go in the opposite direction because I always think the woman will think I'm a pervert. I had an experience where this woman saw me walking in her direction in the park and started frantically trying to stop what she was doing. I didn't even know she was doing anything until she started reacting. I turned around and walked the opposite way and I wasn't really that close to her.

  • you are great!

  • So breastfeeding is pain and suffering?

  • Thank you for your thoughtful commentary. As a Mama nursing a 22 month old (with plans to continue! ;)) It feels so good to see another woman speak so thoughtfully and intelligently on this subject. It is wise and important to use outlets like Youtube for these purposes like this. Thank you for having the foresight to see this as an opportunity and for making the effort.

    Best Wishes To You!

  • I agree 100% with what you said. I agree that the media dictates what is normal in our society. The more we see the more the shock value wears off. I think because women hide breastfeeding or won't do it in public adds to the idea that they are somehow doing something wrong. I grew up with a breastfeeding mother and I grew up around her breastfeeding friends. As a male I knew from a young age what breast are primarily for. I applaud the women like yourself who have the courage to do what you do.

  • I work at a mall and it disapoints me that I see bottlefeeding all the time but rarely do I ever see a woman breastfeeding. I did see a women breastfeeding rather openly in the food court one day during the busy lunch hour. It's funny that even though she was rather exposed for what we're used to in public, nobody really seemed to notice or respond negatively. Everyone seemed to go about their business as usual. That's how it should be. It should be as normal as seeing a woman bottlefeeding.

  • I think you are doing a wonderful job promoting breastfeeding. My son weaned himself when he was well over 3 years old. I wish all mothers knew what an important, beautiful, nurturing thing breastfeeding is.

  • Blah blah... Are you sure it's not because you like guys jerking it to your rack, but have to throw a baby on those titties so it doesn't get banned as porn?

  • Thumbsup.

    Breastfeeding is normal and healthy.

  • @Rakyth

Not at 3 years old. -_-

  • Thank you for this!

Nursing is a wonderful and beautiful thing.

but, I didn't really like the analogy....I don't think it should be seen as something to be desensitized from, but rather something to be embraced.

  • thank for making this video!

  • Sonia you are from Montreal but you have no accent? I know someone who was from there but they had a french accent.

  • Thank you very very much for this video and all the others. I think you help the world to become a bit better. Its great what you do, so go on.

  • Hi sonia. I think that your advocacy is a wonderful education for us all. Its weird how conversations about breastfeeding pop out of nowhere, and with people you least expect to talk about it with. It happened with an older friend of mine, she related to me the fact that she breastfed her last child, she has five, all grown up now, till she was around 4+ she was also a working mother and she would also rush home to feed her. if i see a woman nursing a child of any age , i just give her a smile.

  • the crap you said in this video started to make me dizzy half way thru.

i think you are watching way too much TV and getting your information from the wrong sources. try NEJM or JAMA. you will actually learn something.

  • I don't watch TV and I do read medical journals. What does that have to do with anything? This video has to do with culture, nothing to do with JAMA.

  • @sonia989 lol then how come at about 5m02s u talk about soaps and how you haven't seen them nursing babies? just sayin'. you must be watching some tv. then u say they normally give them bottles. and you have a tc right behind you. well done. I think bfeeding is amazing and healthy and normal. but there's a few problems- why must u be so exposed in public when u nurse? im not saying hide the baby, but hide ur boobs at least. unless u were once a stripper or hooker u wouldnt feel "liberated".

  • I agree this girl seems a bit of a dodo bird trying to pass her self of as a doctor oh but let's not forget she reads medical journals. I have a feeling the reason she breast feeds on you tube is she gets off on exposing her self

  • i think you need some haldol... let me know if you cant get a prescription from your doctor.

  • Shock and rejection are normal reactions to anything unfamiliar that challenges a person's world view.

This is what we call the "That's CRAZY!" reaction.

  • Sonia,

No matter what you think you are overturning about the sexualization of breasts, there are adolescent boys watching your nipples and jerking off to them. Keep that in mind.

  • I'm not trying to overturn the sexualization of breasts. The breasts, like the most of the rest of the female body, is sexualized. What I am trying to do is change people's attitudes towards nursing, extended nursing and public nursing.

Teen age boys will jerk off to anything. If they will get turned on watching a woman old enough to be their mother while she's taking care of her baby, that's their problem.

  • Many would accuse you of exhibitionism.

  • Could a breastfed baby / any children whom were breastfed become immune to the H1N1 virus (Swine Flu) any benefits from that, or could they still get it, either way? Just wondering b/c i heard that the H1N1 virus targets specifically young people, and by young people i mean (anywhere from toddlers - to -teenagers - to - young adults) Just wondering

  • I don't know if they could become immune, but usually babies can catch the same colds/flus as their moms, but they get a weaker version of it because they receive antibodies through the milk.

When they said it targets 'young people' they were refering to the <65 group and especially the 5-45 group. At this time H1N1 still causes mainly mild illness and half the people who get hospitalized have pre-existing conditions, according to the WHO.

  • i post videos breastfeeding my toddler for largely the same reasons. any person i've ever dialogged with who was against nursing toddlers had no REAL reasons why it's harmful, no evidence, no research, just a "feeling" which is their cultural bias. On the other hand, nursing a toddler is well founded in biology and COMMON SENSE. it's not for everyone, but if more people were open to it they would discover a priceless mothering tool. :)

  • Exactly who are the focus group that don't think breast feeding is natural and healthy? Breastfeeding is ok and none of my business when I come across it. I support your freedom to make your point but am not sure there is a point worth making. Human milk is certainly more suitable for humans, than any other kind. It is stupid to be offended at the sight of a woman's breast. I think men are so prone to see everything about women sexually, that they can't see that breasts are not just for sex.

  • Focus groups? Women have been thrown out of public places for nursing. All you have to do is read the comments on these nursing vids to see just how much prejudice nursing mothers face and how little people know of both the benefits of extended nursing and the risks of formula feeding.

  • Very well put. Great video.

  • wonderful video sonia. email me on facebook and let me know how you and gunner are doing :-) talk to you soon. joe is 9 months now .. still breast feeding :-) -Susan

  • Hi! Sorry I haven't been around on facebook, it just sucks up my time whenever I go on there. Hope Joey is doing well. xxoo

  • Thanks to countless years of seeing tribal women breastfeeding in the open, we are now "immune" to this. I dont know how long it will take for the same to happen when we watch people from a western society do the same.

  • Interesting! I didn't know that abou th Bhuda, and I've studied that religion, and believe in reincarnation, and other things like that.

  • I never drank out of a bottle, my mom breastfed me & then I went straight to a sippy cup type thing.

  • I totally and completely 100 percent agree with you! Great video!

  • You're rude, man.

  • do not listen to this *#'"§ !

  • You're beautiful

  • Damn! Keep fighting the good fight
