  • This saved me from having to replace my beloved Mighty Mouse. Thank you!

    Works like new!

  • Symptoms: Down-scroll iffy; alcohol clean --> "Dashboard" popup on any click. Surgery time!

Mousework: Bottom ring, index finger side never released. Nicked extl.insulated wire. Plan-B = rotate all around ring to access ball. Hemostat helped.

ReSeal: (Avoid superglue) W/o rubber cement, so tried poster putty (failed), & finally taped ring in place.

    Test-->Expose failed but rest fine.

Time: ~3-hrs. but no blood. Can live without Expose for now.

    Moral: Design product for maintenance!

  • I tried this, could not reassemble it properly. :-( Aw well... Apple sure makes it more complicated to fix issues so you can go buy another one. Glue?! Com'on!

  • Really great. THANK YOU! Saved me another $80 on a new mouse.

  • Thank you :-)

It now works great, once again!

  • Nice video - simple and easy!

Another way you can clean the mouse is to flip it over and rub the scroll ball on a piece of paper, pushing gently. Brown crap will transfer from the rollers to the paper.

The only caveat, and the reason I took mine apart, is that I pushed too hard too many times and bent the small sensor that detects if you have pushed the ball, seen at 5:17 as a little metal piece under the ball. Popped the mouse open, pried the metal back up, and the mouse is good as new.

  • Be sure to get the microscopic lint that wraps around the axles of the scroll ball rollers, might need a magnifying glass.

  • How did that dog hair get in there???

  • Thank You! Happy mighty mouse now!

  • Great but the problem with my Mmouse is that the cable has unsheathed at the mouse connection point exposing the wires. Now it seems they are gradually pulling out, losing their connections and so the mouse function is getting "spotty. It seems there should be a simple fix to re-anchor the wires. Is there?

  • One thing you did miss is that the ribbon cables (at least in mine) use "zero insertion force" connectors - there's a little latch that you pull up before replacing the ribbon cables, then you just put the ribbons in place (no force required) and push the latch back down. You're much less likely to bend/break the ribbon cables if you use the ZIF connector as intended rather that just forcing in the ribbons...

  • Brilliant video, thanks! I just successfully repaired my dad's scroll ball - now good as new. Took me 15 minutes.

  • i'm about to break mine getting it opened

  • As soon as the rollers fell out, I was ready to throw it all out and buy another one. Your video saved me some money. Thanks! (Works on wireless Mighty Mouse, too.)

  • Excellent instructions! Mine is like new again :-)

If you place your thumb nail into the gap created as you prise the ring off, it is easier and takes less force. I re-assembled mine with four thin strips of adhesive tape to hold the ring in place so the next time it will be easier.

  • Great help. Thanks! I decided to use Quake Hold to affix the ring back to the mouse so it will be easier to disassemble next time I need to clean the ball assembly. It remains to be seen if this solution works.

  • Awesome - I followed along in real time, using a staple remover and a steak knife for tools (I couldn't pause the video b/c I had already unplugged the offending mouse). 100% repaired. What a time saver! Thanks for posting this.

  • The problem is you're doing it with a brand new mouse. If you're like me and have an ancient one the outer ring will come right off with your bare hands.

  • I did it and works a little better, not great. The main problem is that now a frying sound comes fom the inside of the mouse!

  • Great help! worked like a charm.

  • Thanx a lot for the video. Keep up the good work!

  • Cutting the collar loose took a while but everything else was a breeze. It fixed the scrolling problem that I couldn't fix with other methods. As much as I love Apple products I have wonder why they didn't design the Mighty Mouse to be disassembled. After cleaning, my 3 year-old mouse feels and performs like it's brand new.

  • Damn, I just cut myself pretty badly :D

  • thanks a lot !!!

  • thanks a lot, really helped me out.

  • Thank you for the info..But for now the easy way is working with my mouse. Where you flip the mouse on a piece of paper and press and roll. The hair and dirt did come out. But I'm not sure how long it will last. I may have to do this at some point.

  • works like a charm after following instructions. although the grey ring was a biatch to remove. thanks!

  • instead of super glue use strong and flexible glue.. its like rubber but holds plastic together strongly...

  • thankyou for this video.... just did it a few minutes ago.....putting it back together was the part that really helped...

  • apple makes their products almost impossible to open... there is always a way.

  • Sorry my language: It's not good to disassembly because, after remove first ring it is impossible to re-assembly. Break first ring.

  • thank you ~! it is very useful

  • Thanks for the video. I was lucky, mine went a lot longer before jamming than most, but it finally hung up, and no amount of external cleaning would help. Aside from a few small scratches on the lower part of the mouse, everything is good as new, the ball is responsive in all directions!

  • I appreciate the video that you made for this procedure.

There are a lot of people like myself that have had numerous problems with the tracking ball.

  • Thnx a lot. I can do it.

  • well done mate, very clear and audible instructions,i havent tried it yet. but i know everything will go smooth coz of your video thanx::):):)

  • Apple should of made this easier to do!!!

  • Strong work....Like new again

  • Thanx for the vid!

  • Very nice tutorial. You have left nothing to be extrapolated from your instructions. This is the way a tutorial should go!

  • Just fixed my mouse with this. Thank you!

  • Made my frickin' day with an awesome vid and clear audible instructions. Way to go man, thanx!

  • Wow, I thought I had heard that this was almost impossible to pull off but your how-to video made it easy. I was done in 10 minutes and the mouse works like new. Thanks!

  • My freaking mouse is working as it's supposed to be now but snapping off the gray oval line under the mouse is superglueing it back in makes me feel like it is not a *virgin* mouse any more :) I was blaming apple while disassemling the mouse that why the heck didn't they make it easier to clean the damned mouse. Many thanks to your great howto video.

  • the helper is c'nadi'n -- anyway, thax for the advice clip

  • hey awesome video my mouse works great

  • Awesome video! Mighty mouse feels like new. I used spray adhesive on the grey ring instead of super glue so that I can easily pull it off again. It's bound to collect crud a little easier with the spray adhesive, but that way if the scroll wheel gets nasty I can always repeat this process.

  • microsoft scam mac dudes!

  • I just use a Qtip to put some rubbing alcohol on the scroll ball, and roll it around with the Qtip. Works every time.

  • Thanks. just did my mouse. Works great now.

by the way...the wireless mighty mouse insides are a little different. but still easy to do.

  • Great step by step video... works the same for the wireless mighty mouse as well... I love my mighty mouse again...

  • Great step by step... it is the same for the wireless mighty mouse too... i love my mighty mouse again! Thanks!

  • Really great step by step. I thought I'd go crazy. Was apprehensive about tearing apart my mouse but it went really smooth. Thanks! GREAT VIDEO!

  • really great guide. thanks

  • You're a legend, sir!

  • I would only add that mack Tack also works in place of super glue if you're a design student and don't have any glue that works on plastic. Just don't layer it too much or you'll lose clicking

  • Is it me or is apple product not designed to last. Look at everything they make that can be taken with you. Especially their new laptops. hummmmmmmmmm (i have macbook Pro (unibody))

  • finally, i can scroll again. cheers

  • thanks thats what i thought was wrong, but my mouse still dosent scroll up. any clue what that could be

    still thanks

  • got it, thanks

  • Para el inalambrico es el mismo proceso??

Its the same for the inalambric mouse??

    Thanks

  • thanks alot!! worked perfekt..

  • AWESOME!!! Thanks for this usbcd360! Worked like a champ.

  • Thanks a lot bro, the video really helped

  • Great tutorial, thanks a lot pal...

  • This worked perfectly. Thanks.

  • Nice tutorial :D Need to buy screwdrivers tho o_o

  • nice dude.. thanks man. worked great!

  • AWESOME!! Works smoothly! Thanks so much dude for this great tutorial!

  • Don't do this!!!

You have a few chances to ruin your mouse...

Rub your ball with an alcoholized towel (to clean your glasses)

It dissolves all the dirt stucked inside. So rub the ball firmly with it for about 1min and your scroll ball will be like new..

Believe me; I did once open my mouse to clean it ...way too long and painfull...

    GIVE IT A TRY...

  • Great and extremely useful video, thanks a lot! I was going to buy a new Mighty Mouse, so you saved me both money and time, thanks again!

  • thanks for taking the time to make this very simple but effective video , the best way would be to have clean hands before using the mouse , but thanks again for your support to the average mac user .

  • I was having trouble with step-one so I tried the simpler minimal techniques on the other sites.

Rubbing upside down on a napkin with Windex fixed it (for now).

  • thanks for this, great explanation, you wouldn't believe how dirty that stupid roller was! brand new condition again.. can't believe i went so long without proper scrolling function!

This took about 10 minutes with no experience to complete for anyone reading these comments

  • awesome video. very detailed and thorough. my MM is back to perfect!

  • Thank you! :)

  • Thanks. This helped a lot!

  • Dude, seriously...excellent video - great detail. I still broke mine taking it apart. ;-)

  • before folks go taking the mouse apart, I'd suggest you get some kitchen roll/paper and spray on some anti-grease spray you'd use for cleaning kitchen worktops and the like. Then work it into the ball for a minute, dry it off with some fresh kitchen paper and hey presto, you'll be up and working again. Try this before taking apart as it worked for me. Cheers.

  • Excellent!! Thank you it works like a charm now!

  • Thaaaaaankk you!!!

It works great!! After a couple weeks no scrolling down.. It's just GREAT!

  • Thanks a lot! I don't have a Mighty Mouse yet, but I'll get one soon. I've already bookmarked your video because I'm sure I#m gonna watch it several times in the future.

  • i have mine now, but why don't people just blow compressed air into it until it works again. The air won't hurt the electronics at all, but probably swirl around in there as you moved the scroll ball with your thumb etc... until it swooshed all the dirt away from the contact points.

  • good God, I am using my brand new wired version, and i had already told myself, "keep new apple keyboard dusted, keep mighty mouse scroll ball clean... don't eat greasy foods etc..." i am going to do that because this looks like a bitch. I love Apple design, but it seems like they are going for too much style over functionality sometimes.

  • Fantastic! Worked for my Wireless Mighty Mouse, too. The only exception was that it didn't have a wide swing on the hinge; it only had a little more swing than it did to begin with. In any case, incredibly useful, thanks!

  • This worked perfectly for me. I was way out of my comfort zone to even attempt this. But when I was standing in my local Apple Store looking at a $49.00 price tag for a new wired Mighty Mouse, I got desperate ... and creative. So I went to one of the many iMacs in the Store, Googled a bit, found this video tutorial and thought, "It's worth a try." Went home, rescued the discarded Mighty Mouse out of the small trash can near my desk. Thanks SO much. If I can do it, anyone can do it.

  • You did well to get apart and back together mate, but there is a much simpler way to get it to work. Get a clean piece of paper, tip your mouse upside down and rub the ball on the paper vigorously until all the garbage comes out. It really works. Give it a go.

  • I just did this and it worked great, thanks. I took a pad of paper, flipped to a clean sheet, faced the ball towards the paper, pushed down fairly hard, and began rolling the mouse in big circles and zig-zags. Stuff came out and not it works great. Thanks again.

  • Man! glad I scrolled down and Read your post (TheFiggRig) worked like a champ! Thanks!

  • mega bumpz to this comment. that worked in 30 seconds

  • I can't get that darn ring back on... What did I do wrong?

  • i think when you have to take the ring off... you have to break the ring... so you need to put it back on with super glue

  • Basically, your video suggests that apple fucked up.

  • Apparently, this is a different version to mine. I now have one ugly hacked up mouse. Though it still works, I'm going to get a new mouse. NOT a mighty mouse either, since I've been unhappy with it since day dot.

  • Thanks a lot !!!

I fixed it with your help.

  • Very good instructions! Thank you! It is a shame that Apple designs such beautiful products but makes them so damn hard to work on. But, I guess if it was easy it wouldn't be nearly as much fun!

  • Nice video man, I don't have a Mighty Mouse yet, but when I do, I'll now know how to fix it. Thanks!

  • Very nice video man. I followed along with it and now my scroll ball works again. Thank you so much for doing this!

  • You're a legend.

    Thanks chief!

  • Thanks Thanks Thanks!!

  • thanks a lot for this guide! but after all i'm going to buy an „ugly", but working mouse from a third-party-manufacturer. construction and „quality" of the mights mouse are ridiculous.

  • Thanks for such a clear and simple guide. Fixed my mighty mouse first time and its back working great! Pity that the Apple Design team did not consider maintenance for this thing!

  • Many Thanks! Very helpful video!!

  • will it void the warranty

  • yes, I think so, if you try to take it apart and you happen to brake it, they won't give you a new mouse,

I know though another good way of cleaning the ball(s)

just take a vacumcleaner and put it on the wheel , medium power and go :)

you may wana use a piece of papaer or something to make it easier to aim on just the ball , a little pain in the ass to set up everything but it works great :)

  • omg i can scroll up now.

thanks for the video. very helpful!

  • Fixed my mouse in 15 min - thanks.

  • thanks for the video...its very helpful.i was able to fix my mouse (scrolling problem) in less than 15 mins after watching this instruction and made me confident to do it. but i think i have to buy a glue to put back the bottom part. also i added 2g ram to my imac g5 for $63 and it works! youtube is great for do it yourself help. Cheers!!!

  • GREAT video.... Thanks for taking the time to make it ! I followed it to the letter, and my MM is like new ! Apple should REALLY change the way it is made, so as to be a little more user friendly when this needs done.... Mine has been having "Issues" with scrolling after only 7 weeks of use...

  • I opened , cleaned and now is scrolling like new!, but is impossible to put back properly the grey ring ... my mouse is now in the trash...

  • It is possible - just gently cut/file the glue down and re-glue it. My baby son dropped my wireless mighty mouse (apparently mommy wasn't supervising him) and the circuit board got bumped off its clip, so I had to open mine up and just push the circuit board back down. While I was at it, I did clean the scroll ball. The wireless MM is very similar to the wired MM with regards to taking off the ring and pulling it apart.

  • nice one illuminatika

    ill try it too

  • Thank you very much, worked really fine for me :D

  • Worked like a charm, but not a good endorsement of apple design - having to pry that ring off and glue it back on is a real pain.

    Thanks!

  • This worked perfectly for me, thanks for the vid, saved me the price of a new mouse. Tons of gunk around the rollers solved the problem of not being able to scroll down.

  • mate you shouldve mentioned just how difficult it is to get the grey bit off in the first place. otherwise, nice vid ;)

  • Look at the picture in the description. It shows where the original glue points on the mouse are. Cut gently at all of those points many times; if you try to press hard, there's a good chance you'll cut yourself. I nearly did that many times. It may also help to pry with a jeweler's screwdriver, but you risk breaking the ring. It took me nearly half an hour to get the first one, but only about 15 minutes to get the rest.

  • i can't get the mouse apart if i press hard will the grey disk around the bottom smash i only had the mouse a few months

  • Yeah dos!!! right on man... isn't might mouse the name of a cartoon thing?

  • forget it guys, just buy one at a store that accepts returns in 15 days cash back and swap the box, i never did this but i hear everyone is now thanks to apple products.

  • Someone told me to buy one at a store that you can return anything no questions asked, replace the new one with your apple crappy mouse and its done. nothing will fix this better.
