go too Norway and watch the glaciers melt in away it never happened before and then come back. I think you never left your country... Go OPEN YOUR EYES!
To ReadeRomke I don't doubt that the glaciers have been melting, but it's not like the planet's temperature would never change if it wasn't for the human race. You are all so quick to attack anyone who criticizes this whole "carbon emissions cause global warming so we should all pay tax on them" scam. Maybe you need to re-open your minds and examine more of the evidence. The warmest temperatures since records began would be far more shocking if temperature records were more than 150 years old.
Ofcourse natural climate variation exists, but to suggests that human activity is not the main cause of the current climate change would be opposing to the views of almost the entire scientific community. You speak of opening your mind and examining evidence, well I suggest you do just that and hopefully change your mind, after all the science on this issue is, at this point, pretty clear despite of what all the misinformation and junk science being pushed by the "skeptics" might suggest.
i love this song. Anderson Cooper is one of the only honest people on CNN. Wolf Blitzer is as slimy as an eel taking a bath in soap while Lou Dobbs thinks he is so righteous that he gets to decide what is anti-middle class. Campbell Brown is ho gone reporter (and not a hot one at that). Jeff Corwin is actually pretty cool; I used to love his show and its good that's he getting publicity now.
rem have certainly got my attention back for this one, suppose i never forgave them for putting out a record like monster, everything else since that has been cool though lol i would love to see them get a number one from this album!!!! mike and the boys go u!!!!
Monster (fantastic album) was just a return to their roots - this is, after all, a band that was at one point named the best rock band in the USA by Rolling Stone mag.
absolutely!!! it was nice to see them getting that well deserved recognition!!! many people only came in on the out of time album but the older stuff like murmur, lifes rich pageant, document are treasures yet to be explored by the "later fans" the rem catalogue has to be one of the finest ones ever!!!
alright i totally get how we should do something about this stuff but it pisses me off when you get tons of people who care more about this stuff than people suffering in situations like darfur, congo, burma and elsewhere that are so easy to affect instantly and swiftly. dont get wrong keep up the good work but remember its not worth it if the earth your saving is a haven of suffering
Yes, you couldn't be more right about the need to do something for the people suffering and dying in the places you mention. But I think you're mistaken to believe that these situations can be affected quickly. There are all kinds of political and military obstacles preventing relief and aid. I'm not excusing us for not doing more to prevent the genocide, suffering, and starvation, but I am suggesting that it is not easy to achieve that goal.

the new tune isn't good - bland sentiment, pining sincerity - what made rem magical was the mystery, the surrealism - compare this dirge to "we walk" or "can't get there from here" or "man on the moon" or even "lotus". the good times are over, and we're in an rem recession.
Why should it matter who does it as long as SOMEONE does it? I'm all for anyone with the motivation and the conscience to step up. Why should their efforts be belittled simply because they're white? It doesn't have anything to do with anything. I don't know or care what color you are, but you sound like a racist.
This is ever so cool now that former journalist/anchor woman turned politician Maxine McKew booted out Australia's Priminister John Howard from his own electoral seat. The signals were there but Howard wasn't listening..
yes REM is/are great -and a pleasant return to folk ways this song is- but there won't be a world to play their music in, unfortunately. Pull your finger out, people!
I think if you listen to the rest of the songs from Dublin you'll see that there's defintely a world and a place for REM today. If they release any of the following (Accelerate, Horse To Water, Living Wells, Disguised, Man Sized Wreath) as singles, they should have no problem getting radio play!
I still hear the band nearly every day on the radio over here. People just need an excuse to play them and the new songs should give them that IMO.
I think Up as an album isn't great. It's too long for a start. And having Airportman as the first song is just madness. But it has some of R.E.M.s most under rated songs on it. Dimished is genius! Falls to climb, apologist, in the air, suspicion, lotus, etc
Personally, I think Reveal is REM's weakest. I have all of their albums by the way. Their best are New Adventures In Hi-Fi, Life's Rich Pageant and Reckoning. Reveal is not a bad album at all, but REM have done so much better. Around the Sun was much better than I expected and I'm really looking forward the next album now.
rear view mirror is a PJ and an REM reference ;) (rearviewmirror a lyric in whats the frequency)
i guess its down to opinion but I've never been mad about Fables. Every thing REM has ever done has had a great edge to it. Even the slower songs always do. Fables just drags for me. In saying that, i love Maps and legends, cant get there from here, driver 8 and life and how to live it! lol
wow, its amazing how people can comment on "new REM" being ATSish when they clearly haven't even listened to the Dublin shows from the summer! This along with 2 others are the only slow songs out of 11 that were debuted in Dublin. Go and type in 'olympia gigs' and see what the new album will be like.
Oh and btw...to vegetablehead, just because you're a fan of a band longer, doesnt mean you know whats good and whats bad from a band.
Yeah, "Until The Day Is Done" sounded great at Dublin. Along with all the other new songs--except "Man Sized Wreath". I don't know why I can't get into that song. Maybe I just haven't listened to it long enough. "Accelerate" is my favorite of the 11.
I'll Take The Rain was my favourite, but obviously there were other songs I liked (the ones you mentioned for example)! But I still maintain that it was poor, by REM's standards.
Out of Time for me was not spectacular in any way. Losing my Religion and Country Feedback were amazing, but the rest of the songs weren't really 'up there'. Monster & Automatic were great though!

I actually think this a fantastic sounding song. The high E dropped tuning and almost arabic sound to the music as well as the strings makes for a genuinely interesting sound.
It seems to be that the "it's not as good as Automatic" bandwagon is very easy to jump on, and I doubt that REM want to replicate previous work anyway.

the drop tuning has been done a million times before. yes different for REM, but the same sound as numerouse other bands. i knew more about REM probably b4 any of you were born so...
This preview makes me so sad and overwhelmed with hopelessness. We need to do something to save our planet and the life of all living things. Extinction of any life form is not acceptable. Our politicians are not doing enough. Al Gore NEEDS to run for President!

total crap...i'd rather listen to BonJovi's wanted dead or alive.
Reckoning is one of the all time greatest albums...when micheal had hair -- not some bald, wrinkled (acne scarred) faggot freak!
God created all you see. If the earth is rally in trouble then maybe we should ask Him to help. But then again we wouldn't listen anyway. green is the color of money, don't forget.
well if you want even 'better' crap, all you had to do was watch snl over the weekend (coincidence?) i'll take nightswimming any day over some pseudo-poli green garbage.
Well, being a citizen od the U.S. doesn't automatically make you a good person. Don't you reckon it's a good thing that R.E.M. is pointing some of your bad sides, so you could change it?
Anyway, nothing is more important that saving the environment. And the song is great.
Argh. More political crap from a band that used to be great.
Anderson Cooper is a a pompous poser. The ice sheet he talks about is no where near as thick as his skull.
REM was great up until Bill left.
I love older REM and listen to that music all the time, but totally lost interset when the band ask that you listen with guilt for being a citizen of the U.S.
starrynight3, you have the right to say what you will. But I respectfully disagree. Bill was an important part of the band, I do agree with that, but Michael and his passions are the heart and life-blood of the music and the message. I find the band is relevant now more than ever.
I can only hope this video and series on CNN will touch people's heart's and mind's as it has mine. Maybe our generation can be the one that actually stands up and makes a difference in this world!
Vocals are really raw. Good sign for the next album! The melody in this song is fantastic. Hope it's not first single though. Want that to be a rocker!!

This preview makes me so sad and overwhelmed with hopelessness. We need to do something to save our planet and the life of all living things. Extinction of any life form is not acceptable. Our politicians are not doing enough. Al Gore NEEDS to run for President!

Around the Sun all over again...

I'm afraid so... This song wouldn't make it to the b-sides of Automatic or New Adventures. I don't even mention the I.R.S. years :(

total crap...i'd rather listen to BonJovi's wanted dead or alive.

I judge Bon Jovi would rather be associated with the program's message than with you.

well if you want even 'better' crap, all you had to do was watch snl over the weekend (coincidence?) i'll take nightswimming any day over some pseudo-poli green garbage.

Well you go and listen to it then, moron. Its best you do.

I find the band is relevant now more than ever.

michael's voice goes right threw me, brilliant

Vocals are really raw. Good sign for the next album! The melody in this song is fantastic. Hope it's not first single though. Want that to be a rocker!!

Yeah, great song. Looks like REM is getting back on tracks. Thank God.
And the video is so sad... We should care about environment. I hate how people are destroying their own home.
