While the C64 could probably manage something somewhat similar to VVVVVV, it wouldn't be able to come close to what you see here. These games may look simplistic, but they still have a lot going on. The backgrounds are animated and there are a lot of quick moving sprites, the C64 couldn't handle it.

A lot of games were crappier 30 years ago because people were still trying to figure out what exactly is fun. A lot of people were just proud to be able to publish whatever they made (at Atari and such)!
And then Atari became decadent and started publishing more and more utter shit, lowering the production time and quality of the games as they went along. ET is a rather classic example of that.

To comment on Fraser, actually some games on the Commodore 64 were pretty good. Not all games obviously but that would be typical of any console or computer system of any time period. The nice thing with VVVVVV is that it shows a game using C64 based graphics can still do very well today.

I disagree Fraser, there were lots of great games back in the day, especially on the C-64 and Amiga 500. Games with simple graphics and very addicting gameplay. The ideas were insane, i.e. a game were you brush teeth or a game were you mowed the lawn. But if you're talking about console games then I agree. Console ports of games were also shitty, the best port of a game was always the C-64 port, in the 90s it was the Amiga version and 1997 onward the PC port is most of the time the best one.
