It all comes down to stage presence. In Phantom Planet, Darren is always on the left of Alex(when looking at them) and Sam's on the right, and in The Zombies, the guitar player was on the right and bass left, so logically(=P) they switched to be like The Zombies.

by the time this episode aired i had already given up on the show...but i watched just to see this performance.
