SA80 is the family - "Small Arms for the 1980s" (yeah we're nice and up to date), covers a bunch of weapons. The A1 got slated in the press, so we handed it over to Heckler and Koch who tweaked things, whacked some red paint on a few bits and lo, the A2 was born.

That's my understanding at any rate, keeping it vague to avoid Opinionated Orville the YouTube User coming along and telling me how wrong all that is.

The L85 series rifles have a bullpup design witch means the firing mechanism is in the stock allowing for a shorter weapon.

@JesusDeputy The opportunities you get for Adventure Training (skiing, sailing, hiking etc.), leadership courses, the fact that you've joined a recognised youth organisation, you can do your Duke of Edinburgh's Award - all that looks fantastic on a CV. That's me assuming the Army Cadets are anything like the Air Training Corps of course. Or the University Officer Training Corps. My knowledge of the Army Cadets is pretty much "their drill is crap." But then so is the OTC's :P

@JesusDeputy If it's something you really want to do, then go for it. You dont have to be stationed with an Infantry BTN. I'm Infantry and I love it, I wouldn't have it any other way. Im starting the SMP after this semester and requesting to be with an Infantry BTN lol but you can request to be with other BTN's... Infantry is what alot of cadets want so Im sure there are open slots else where.

Only time I've ever used it is room clearance, because 5m is about the only time you're going to hit a target with more than the first round. Did a live-fire advance to contact down a street with UOTC once, told us to switch to auto once we got to the end, reeeaaally didn't see the point.

Oh, and used it a lot when playing enemy, but that's a) blanks and b) hilarious, so doesn't count :P

The gun, even if it works better is still shit in comparison to what other rifles are out there.

Remington ACR, FN Scar, HK G36 & HK416 just to name afew, there lighter, ALOT more reliable, ALOT more user friendly and FAR easier to strip & modify.

With the ACR you can even change the caliber in a matter of seconds.

Actualy Sa80 is a collective name to a family of weapons mainly being the L85A2which is a very reliable weapon and is very easy to strip and clean in the field. It is also one of the most accurate assualt rifles in service today. Yes the A1 was a disaster but H&K have seriously improved it with the A2.

The SA80 is well known for having its housing pins bent or lost when stripped.

The A2 is accurate, but its not the best out there. Many of the rifles Ive mentioned do better groupings.

The G36, ACR and Scar series are about the same accuracy wise, but are lighter, far more reliable and adaptable.

* I assure you it's L85A2, L98A2 hadn't even started manufacture when I was on this course.

* You CAN have an L85A2 with iron sights because the sight units are detachable and interchangeable - tomseaton, what would you call an SA80 with a CWS on top instead of a SUSAT? L85A2 with CWS. Or heavy.

And Murdoch, yes, I passed, but that was years back - I'm at Uni now, and OTC's much, MUCH better.

i think he may be in the SFSG or SAS reserves but he would never tell you he was SAS and even if he was proper 22 SAS he would only use the SA80 if he was in britain (either on stag or on an exersise)

No special forces use the weapons or uniforms of their country they usually mix and match eg one man will have a british DPM jacket and American ACU trousers with an austalian army helmet and a german army flektarn helmet cover ect
